A Light on the Hill: Building to Serve

On October 10, 2010, the Chapel of the Cross formally launched a capital campaign to enable it to enhance its buildings in order to better fulfill its many ministries. It represents a remarkable endeavor of hope, faith, and commitment for our Episcopal community in Chapel Hill. It is truly about "Building to Serve."

The Chapel of the Cross has long been a beacon to all who seek spiritual refuge and renewal. We now plan how we can build upon and expand that mission. At least two decades of thoughtful prayer, imagination, and hard work by many vestries and countless members and friends have resulted in this Master Vision of the Chapel of the Cross’s current and future needs and potential.

Plans for building a new Parish Hall with expanded educational facilities represent a third "critical juncture" in the life of the Chapel of the Cross. The first occurred in 1842, when some of the first Episcopalians to reside in Chapel Hill decided to establish the Chapel, at a time when the university was in its early years. The second occurred in the 1920s, with the construction of our beautiful sanctuary. Now, at the outset of the 21st century, our need for expanded space in a modern building, reflect specific needs in the areas of Christian education, spiritual development, parish-wide fellowship, and outreach. Our Capital Campaign illumines the future of our parish as we seek to serve those whose names are not yet known to us, whose faces are unformed in our memory but whose lives will enhance, enrich and ennoble our parish’s ministries in ways we can only begin to imagine.

The new building will dramatically increase our facilities for classrooms, Episcopal Youth and Campus Ministry, offices, a new kitchen and provide for the first time a large and lovely Fellowship Hall for parish-wide events. It represents a 90% increase in our total program space. Every program, whether internal and serving our own church family or external and serving the broader Chapel Hill community, will greatly benefit from the new facilities. It will enable us to better serve every age group and increase our Open Door to the world. Careful planning and architectural design has developed a vision appropriate to and consistent with the high quality and timeless character of our current Chapel and Sanctuary. Meticulous attention to the historic character of Chapel of the Cross will ensure that our new facilities continue and enhance our treasured traditions and identity on the campus of the University of North Carolina.

There are many ways to give to the capital campaign and participate in this wonderful endeavor of Chapel of the Cross.
