Outreach

As you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me (Matthew 25:40).

Throughout scripture and our Anglican tradition, there are mandates for social ministry. In Matthew 25:34-46, Jesus directs us to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, invite in the stranger, clothe the naked, look after the sick, and visit prisoners. James 1:22-25 tells us not only to listen to the Word, but to act on it. Our Baptismal Covenant, the Catechism and General Thanksgiving in The Book of Common Prayer, specifically direct us to love others; to strive for justice, freedom and peace in the world; to respect the dignity of all persons; and to help provide the necessities of life for those less fortunate than ourselves. We are asked to use our talents and possessions in ways that show forth our praise of God, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to His service. St. Francis of Assisi said, as Christians we are asked to "witness abd proclaim the gospel to the world, using words only when necessary."
