Elder Ministry
This is a ministry with and for the elders of the parish offering opportunities for education, service, fellowship, and to extend care to others.
At some area retirement communities, worship services, Bible studies, prayer groups, and Christian Formation programs are offered periodically by church staff.
Carol Woods Service - A service of Holy Communion is held at Carol Woods Retirement Community on the second and fourth Sundays of each month at 4:00 pm. It is open to all members of Carol Woods and the larger community. For more information call the Chapel of the Cross office (919-929-2193) or email Francis Newton at fnewton@duke.edu.
Carolina Meadows Service - A service of Holy Communion is held at 10:00 am on the first Sunday of each month at Carolina Meadows Retirement Community. For more information call the Chapel of the Cross office (919-929-2193) or email Bob and Sallie Comey at rcomey@mindspring.com.
Carolina House: A Bible Study is available, led by the Rev. Victoria Jamieson-Drake, who can be reached through the Chapel of the Cross office (919-929-2193).
For homebound elders (and others) not living in these retirement communities and who have short-term crisis or illness intervention needs, the services of the “Good Samaritan Guild”, described in this Pastoral Care section of the website, are available. For those with longer-term needs, the parish offers the “Parish Visitors” program, also described in this section of the website.
For children of aging parents Chapel of the Cross offers a support group on the first Sunday of the month during the Adult Education time (10:20 – 11:05 am). The group is entitled “Growing with Our Aging Parents” and is facilitated by parishioner and clinical psychologist Ann Baker. For more information contact Ann via email or call the parish office (919-929-2193).
Finally, elders in the parish interested in offering their time or talents to the Chapel of the Cross community are warmly invited to volunteer for any of the many organizations operating within the parish. Many of these are described elsewhere within this website. Or call the parish office or the Rev. Victoria Jamieson-Drake on 919-929-2193 for more information on these or other opportunities to be of service to others.
