Men's Prayer Breakfast
The Chapel of the Cross Men’s Prayer Breakfast is a 20 year organization at the parish. Designed by Bert Liverance, as the Men’s Breakfast Group, its purpose is to engage men of the parish in a monthly fellowship of spiritual camaraderie. The guest speakers address topics that feed the participants with spiritual and social consciousness. Volunteers provide a light breakfast. In keeping with tradition, few changes have been made to the original intent. However, 2007 saw a few variations.
In January 2007, Tony Hawkins received the gavel of chairmanship from Vince Collura. Another change was to incorporate the word ‘Prayer’ into the group’s name. And the other change was that the 2007 speaker schedule featured more parish members as presenters on topical issues that would challenge the participants’ thought process. January opened with a time of prayer in the chapel. February’s meeting was a planning session for the group. In March, Dr. Quinn spoke on ‘Worship and Music” April saw the Rev. David Frazelle expand on his “Kontakion on Elijah” where the entire group had the opportunity to read a verse of the epic. In May, Dr. Richard Pfaff conversed on ‘Cultural Levels of Worship’. Dr. Pfaff’s dry sense of humor is a ‘must have’ in your life. In June, Earl Cox, Founder and President of Scianta Intelligence and an Episcopal Bishop’s retreat orator presented a wonderful talk on AI (artificial intelligence and the implications of its evolution for the meaning of life.)
The Sunday Summer Breakfast was prepared by MPB with assistance from the following parishioners: Valerie Bateman, Sankey Blanton, Duane Gilbert, Robert Hook, Dave Scocca, Jay Reeves, Henry Thomas, Ken Stynes, and Tony Hawkins. Our new facilities manager, Ron McGill, was also helpful. In September, Curtis Jackson from our sister church, St. Paul AME, shared thoughts on our sister parish relationship. And our rector provided a great video that was produced to highlight the story of our two churches. Just before Advent, Suzanne Sauter shared her soon to be published work on Advent Preparation and we closed the year with Terry Eason speaking about his expertise in Liturgical Design. In 2007 we heard many ‘inhouse’ speakers, a pattern we wish to keep, and topics that ranged from music in worship to artificial intelligence.
The Men’s Prayer Breakfast meets on the last Wednesday of each month, excluding the summer months, at 7:30 am. Please join us. It’s a great group of people. For more information, contact Tony Hawkins .
