February 3, 2008

Present: Ann Baker, Alice Cotten, Cynthia Crittenden, Gale Gilchrist, Mary Kent Hill, Terry Johnston, Sandra McClaskey, Peggy Pratt, Jimmy Satterwhite, Barbara Tremblay, Patricia Watts
Guests: Linda Frankel and Elizabeth Waugh-Stewart of the Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County
Devotions: Alice Cotten guided the group through a short “sit” in Centering Prayer and invited committee members to take part in the weekly Centering Prayer gathering.
Minutes: The December 2007 Minutes were approved as revised. Under the Johnson Intern Program the first sentence of the second paragraph should read: The program is one of 8 similar intern programs in the country. In the last sentence of the second paragraph the word Vestry should read: Church. In addition, under Business – it should be added: Blue Ribbon Mentor – Peggy spoke to the Director at Blue Ribbon Mentor to clarify that we did not provide funds with ABC Funds for the trip to Africa (which overruled the recommendation of the sub-committee) but instead the committee chose to support a scholarship for one child at the $500 level.
Community Organizations Liaison Reports:
Helping Hands – Cynthia Crittenden
Helping Hands serves Orange and Chatham and part of western Wake counties with 320 volunteers. A sliding scale fee begins at $16.50 per hour with approximately 7 new clients each week. Volunteers receive in-depth training before working with clients. Every Valentine’s Day all clients receive Valentines and flowers. Challenges include the growing senior population.
The Augustine Project – Mary Kent Hill
This literacy project, begun in 1994, currently serves Orange, Durham and Chatham counties. Sixty hours of training is required at a cost of $250.00 per volunteer and there is a waiting list. Fifteen percent of their funding comes from The Church of the Holy Family.
Project Home Start – Sandra McClaskey
As a part of the Interfaith Council, Project Home Start provides housing for homeless women and children. There is no time limit for the stay of the families. The project’s challenge is understaffing.
Finance Report:
Vestry member Sandra McClaskey reported that the 2008 COTC Budget includes $18,000 designated for Community Organizations and $19,000 for Discretionary funding.
Global Requests: The Global Missions Committee made a 2008 COTC budget request of $15,500 but were granted a budget total of $12,000 which was the same as the previous year. All of the parish’s .7% toward the MDGs will be spent at the discretion of the Global Missions Committee on Christian fellowship directed toward three specific MDGs: primary education, health, and the empowerment of women.
Financial Requests:
PEACE CENTER ORANGE COUNTY PRISON -- Sandra McClaskey moved and Ann Baker seconded a motion to recommend to the Vestry for $3,000 for the Peace Center Orange County Prison Unit from the Social Ministries, Endowment Fund. The committee unanimously voted approval.
1 MILLION MEALS – Barbara Tremblay moved and Sandra McClaskey seconded a motion to recommend the Vestry approve $1,000 to the Rotary Club for funding the local initiative of the 1 Million Meals event on April 5, 2008.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN -- Consensus was reached that our Social Ministry Mission requires us to continue pursuing inclusion of outreach funds as an essential part of the Capital Campaign. Peggy will plan to meet with John Koch.
New Business:
- Million Meals -- Cynthia Crittenden reported that the April 5th event will request volunteers through the Sunday bulletin.
- CROP Walk – Jimmy Satterwhite reported that Ned Baker and Teddy Lovejoy will be invited to attend the planning meetings later this month. Charles Williams is the coordinator. The 5K CROP Walk is scheduled for Sunday, April 13th.
- APRIL CROSSROADS theme is Aging. The Johnson intern assigned to Helping Hands will be asked to write an article.
- ABC Subcommittee – to disburse funds after the sale will be chaired by Cynthia Crittenden with members Barbara Tremblay and Alice Cotten. Announcements about the application process will be in the Sunday bulletin and on the web-site. Sandra McClaskey, who will be out of town the day of the sale, will organize the end of sale event for individuals from community organizations needing household items and clothing. We will look for someone to help on sale day.
Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County: Chair Peggy Pratt introduced Executive Director Linda Frankel and Board Chair Elizabeth Waugh-Steward. They explained that the organization began through the Women’s Center and began providing services in 2001. The Center’s mission is to prevent and end family violence in Orange County communities through direct services and community education.
Client services are free, confidential and bi-lingual. A staff of 7 and 25-30 volunteers (who receive 40 hours of training) provide around the clock services to 650-700 clients per year. The 2008 budget is $323,000 with plans for an increase in 2009 to $400,000 providing an additional staff position.
Committee Updates:
- Refugee Resettlement – Barbara Tremblay reported some response to request for volunteers and yet more volunteer hours are needed to meet the needs of this Burmese family. The family is saving money and taking on some financial responsibility.
- Alternative Gifts results -- A total of $1,374 was donated during Advent. $463 to the IFC 24/7 Challenge Grant and $911 donated to Episcopal Relief & Development designated for malaria nets.
- Partner with a Social Worker – Ann Baker reported that teens ageing out of foster care need assistance.
Announcements: Cinda Meyer – needs to be in an inactive status with the committee for now due to work and travel commitments.
The meeting adjourned at 3:15 pm with The Lord’s Prayer.
