Mission Trip  Stockholders Needed

Stockholders are needed for the Chapel of the Cross Youth Mission Trip, Aug. 1-7. Each $25 share entitles the holder to:  receive a personal letter from a Chapel of the Cross youth from a mission site; attend a celebration where the Chapel of the Cross youth will present their mission trip experiences; and the satisfaction of participating in God’s work in the world through the ministry of our youth. Please join us in these Ministries by becoming a Chapel of the Cross stockholder!

Parish Census 2010

A key component of effective parish communication is accurate information about our parishioners. Please take a few minutes to update your contact information for the parish database, even if you think we already have it on file. You can complete the census form at www.surveymonkey.com/s/parishcensus2010. If you have questions about the survey itself, send a note to info@thechapelofthecross.org. We would like to have this project (including contact with parishioners who do not have email access) completed by September 1. Please be assured that we will keep all answers confidential as this is to be used for contact and pastoral purposes only. Thank you so much for your help!

Hospitality Manager Needed

The parish is seeking a person for a part-time position responsible for maintaining the orderliness and hospitality of our facility, especially the kitchen, dining room and parlor as well as serve as a resource for groups using these areas. This position is for up to 10 hours per week. It may require some flexible hours including weekends and Sundays for special services. For more information and a full job description, contact Mary Anne Handy.

Lay Delegates to the Annual Convention of the Diocese

The Annual Convention of the Diocese of North Carolina will be held at Benton Convention Center, Winston-Salem, Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21 & 22, 2011. Delegates and alternates are to be elected by the vestry on Sept. 15. If you are interested in serving as a Lay Delegate or Alternate to the Annual Convention, or would, with their permission, like to nominate any communicants, please notify the clergy or the Senior Warden, Ford Worthy.

Church School Registration

This year we need a registration completed for every child, ages 2 (by September 1, 2010) through High School.  There is a new discipline policy which requires a parent’s signature, profile information on your child and information about volunteer opportunities.  The form is available in printed form outside the Christian Formation Office and on the website.  We encourage parents to complete this at their earliest convenience.  Church School will begin on September 12 with the annual staff skit and a short visit to the classrooms.  September 19 will be the first teaching Sunday.  Church School is held from 10:20 a.m. – 11:05 a.m.  Nursery for children under 2 years of age is offered from 8:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Interested in Teaching?

The Christian Formation office has begun recruiting teachers for the children and youth classes of the parish.  Due to unusually high turnover this year, we have more openings for teaching positions.  Please prayerfully consider if teaching is a gift or skill you have and consider sharing it with one of the classes.  Teacher orientation will be held on Sunday, August 22 from 4:00-7:00 and will include an excellent guest speaker (Sharon Bly-Pearson from Church Publishing).  The annual kick off skit will be presented on September 12; the first teaching Sunday is September 19.  Church School is offered from 10:20-11:05 through May 22, with most teachers volunteering twice a month.  “What is the Teaching Situation?”  is an information sheet you may reference.  This is posted on the Children and Family Ministry bulletin board in the dining room with the present teacher roster.

Prayers of the People-Parish Supported Ministries

Each week in the prayers of the people, a parish supported ministry is listed. What are these parish supported ministries? These are community organizations which are supported by your financial contributions to The Chapel of the Cross. One of the roles of the Outreach Ministry Committee (OMC) is to recommend to the vestry  the disbursement of funds based on grants requested of our parish. This also includes money raised by the ABC sale. Another role of the OMC is to educate the parish regarding the needs of community. You can find a bit of information about this organization below. Watch for the blurb and pray with us!

Meals on Wheels

The Meals On Wheels Association of America is the oldest and largest national organization composed of and representing local, community-based Senior Nutrition Programs in all 50 U.S. states. Senior hunger in America is a monumental problem.  Today, there are nearly 6 million seniors in the US   facing the threat of hunger. The first “Meals On Wheels” were delivered in canteens to British servicemen during World War II. The first formal Meals On Wheels program in America began serving Philadelphia shut-ins in the 1950s. There are some 5,000 local Senior Nutrition Programs in the United States. These programs provide well over one million meals to seniors who need them each day, but the one million meals per day figure underestimates the size and shape of the network and its reach and influence in communities across America.

Thank You from the Johnson Intern Program

Many thanks to staff and volunteers from the Chapel of the Cross for another year completed in the Johnson Intern Program.  Your support and participation are essential to the ongoing success of the program, and we can’t thank you enough. Please sign up for our newsletters and updates, which include opportunities for parishioners. We will be holding a one-session “Orientation to Servant Leadership” with Ruth Anderson on Aug. 4. Our 10-week Servant Leadership course will begin on Sept. 10. You can find out all about us on our website, www.johnsoninternship.org, and read our past newsletters there.

St. James (July 25)

O gracious God, we remember before you today your servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that you will pour out upon the leaders of your Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among your people; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
