Today

Youth Mission Trip Presentation and Letter-Writing Event

Please join the 2010 Youth Mission Trip participants in the chapel today following the 9:00 a.m. service to hear about their experiences. This year, the group traveled to Tennessee where they worked in the struggling communities of Sherwood and Nashville. We plan to share a slideshow and have individuals share poverty and challenges to the distribution of education they witnessed. There will also be a letter-writing event in the dining room. We will be providing copies of a letter to either use or edit to send to President Obama thanking him for his recent plan to meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 and seeking his continued support of the Global Fund to combat TB and malaria. Information on the Obama plan, entitled Celebrate, Innovate and Sustain, and the Global Fund will be available at the program.

Parish Notes

Youth and College Acolytes and Youth Readers

All junior and senior high youth and all college students are encouraged to consider serving as an acolyte. Trainings for new and returning acolytes will be Sunday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. (following EYC) and Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. (following ECM). Contact David Frazelle (929-2193) with questions. All youth grades 6 through 12 are encouraged to consider serving as a lay reader. A training with David Frazelle for new and returning youth readers will be held Thursday, Sept. 23 at 4:15 p.m. Contact David with questions.

Youth Saints Needed

Youth Saints (youth ages third grade and older who are not members of the Jr. Choir) are an important part of our Children’s Chapel service. Youth Saints prepare the children’s altar and chapel, assist the adult leaders, encourage young parishioners to participate fully in worship and clean the chapel following the service. Assigned to teams, youth saints volunteer approximately once a month during the 9:00 Children’s Chapel service. Applications to serve as youth saints are available outside the Christian Formation office and on the Chapel of the Cross website. All interested youth saints must submit an application. Please contact Boykin Bell (929-2193 ext. 37) with questions.

Registrations for Church School

To update and improve our records, we are asking all Church School students to register this year even if they have registered in the past. Registration forms are available outside the Christian Formation office and on the Chapel of the Cross website, “Children” or “Youth.”

Liturgical Calendars Available

Calendars for those who have been assigned liturgical roles this fall are available in the dining room and on this parish website (click on the “Worship” tab). Calendars will not be mailed in order to save on postage and printing costs. Please contact the parish office if you are not able to access the calendar online.

Parish Census 2010

A key component of effective parish communication is accurate information about our parishioners. Please take a few minutes to update your contact information for the parish database, even if you think we already have it on file. You can complete the census form by clicking on the link on this parish website. If you have questions about the survey itself, send a note to info@thechapelofthecross.org. Paper copies of the form will be available in the parish office after all services and can be deposited in the wooden box. We would like to have this project (including contact with parishioners who do not have email access) completed by September 1. Please be assured that we will keep all answers confidential as this information is to be used for contact and pastoral purposes only. Thank you so much for your help!

Millenium Development Goals Update

The United Nations Summit will bring world leaders together in New York on September 20-22 to recommit to the 8 goals set in 2000. Today there will be a parish wide letter writing campaign in support of the MDGs between morning services. Copies of the 4 part DAY 1 series, underwritten by parishoners Charlie and Margaret Browning, are available in the dining room on the Adult Education bulletin board. The final DAY 1 capstone message will be delivered by former President Jimmy Carter on Sept. 12. Copies will be available. For additional information reference http://www.un.org/millenniumgoals/.

New Support Team Forming

An existing support team is looking for new team members. Q: What’s a support team? A: a group of volunteers who are organized and trained to provide practical, emotional, and spiritual support to a person undergoing a prolonged health crisis. This is a very fulfilling, meaningful ministry. (Just ask any who have served on prior support teams.) Orientation is required. Contact Vicky Jamieson-Drake at 929-2193 if you’d like to join the team.

This Week’s Parish-Supported Ministry in the Prayers of the People
 –––––– Student Health Action Coalition

SHAC is a student led organization whose mission is to: provide free health services to local underserved individuals and communities, partner with communities to develop and implement sustainable programs, and create an interdisciplinary service learning environment for students in the health science programs at UNC. The program is under the supervision of UNC medical care providers, but SHAC is run entirely by student volunteers. Most patients earn less than $15,000 per year or are unemployed.

Mary Harris Bible Study

The Mary Harris Bible Class resumes meeting, Tuesday, Sept. 7 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the parish library. The class will begin to read The Song of Songs, a book in the Bible both unique and controversial. The question has been raised how such a frank and uninhibited love poem came to be included among the sacred books of the Bible. As one scholar has written, “the voice of love in the Song is a woman’s voice. This feminine voice speaks profoundly of love, its beauty, delights and overwhelming power, a love which burns with the intensity of a blazing fire and draws a man and woman together. It is the Lord’s gift and such love is a wonderful part of marital life in God’s good creation.” All are invited to join us as we explore The Song of Songs. For more information, please write Mary Schoenfeld or call the parish office for her phone number.

Matthew’s Gospel: Many Questions

The Rev. Dr. Richard Pfaff is offering a class on Tuesday evenings September 7, 14, 21, 28, and October 5 from 8 to 9:30 p.m. It is intended to elicit as many questions as possible—many more questions, certainly, than answers about the Gospel according to Matthew. Not envisaged as “Bible Study” or “Introduction to Matthew” in anything like the conventional senses, the five sessions will take up matters like the state of this Gospel before it became part of the “New Testament,” how it relates to other gospels (canonical or not), transmission, and translation. Participants will be expected to have read through the entire Gospel before the initial meeting: swiftly, if possible at one sitting, and (if possible) in the Revised Standard Version. Signing up for the classes will be through the parish office—in person, by telephone or electronically. Please supply a usable email or phone number. Although a lot of spirited individual participation is hoped for, those who wish to take a less active part in discussion are equally welcome.

Annual Parish Barbeque

The Annual Parish Barbeque will be held on Sunday, September 12, at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to attend! Tickets will be on sale following the 9:00 and 11:15 services this Sunday and again on Sunday, September 5. Prices of the tickets are: Adults - $10.00; Children - $5.00; UNC Students – no charge. Please contact Presley Wagoner (or call parish office for number) for more information.

Fall Quiet Day

On Saturday, Sept. 25 from 9:30 a.m. till 2:30 p.m., St Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 210 St. Mary’s Road, Hillsborough will host our joint retreat. Using the theme, “Flowering from Within of Self-Blessing,” Fall Quiet Day participants will ponder how they can renew and direct the holy gift of vocation, which “flowers within” and connects them more deeply to God and the world. The theme will be explored in meditations led by the Rev. Susannah Smith, combined with time for personal reflection and worship. A simple lunch will be served.

2011 ABC Sale

The 2011 ABC Sale will be held on Saturday, April 9. If you’re interested in a department chair or co-chair position, please contact Reg Carver or Mary Sullivan. It’s never too early to sign up!

Volunteers Needed for FVPC

Family Violence Prevention Center of Orange County is recruiting volunteers! The 48-hour training (hotline advocates only) includes both classroom and real time “shadowing.” Prior to training, a completed application and interview are required. For more details on any volunteer opportunities or to download the application, please visit www.fvpcoc.org.

Prison Ministry Opportunity

An Orange County Episcopal Prison Ministry event is planned for Friday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Family. A documentary featuring local men called "Against the Tide" will be shown. Please join our friends from the Church of the Advocate and Holy Family, along with other interested parties, to discuss the progress of church based transition work for the 200 Orange County residents who annually are released from our prison system and return home trying to avoid recidivism.

Bible Study Fellowship

BSF, an in-depth Bible study with focus on life applications, will start classes on Sept. 13 at 6:55 p.m. This year we will study Isaiah. Please note the new location: Church of the Good Shepherd, 3741 Garrett Rd, Durham 27707. Our first class will also be an introduction class where new members can register. BSF includes a school program for children grades 1-12. Please call Sandra McClaskey (ask the parish office for her number) for more information.

Before Worship

"O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

Book of Common Prayer, p.833
