The members of the Episcopal Youth Community look forward to many annual events. EYC continued many of them in 2007. In February, we participated in our third 30-hour famine, working and playing with youth from two local churches. We made our contribution to the ABC sale last spring by helping to set up the sale rooms the week before the sale and by making
and selling lunch during the sale. EYC helped many to renew the spirit of Christmas by performing the annual pageant.
Last summer, youth from the Chapel of the Cross participated in Youth Week at Kanuga. The entire conference center was filled with youth and adults who work with youth. The energy was palpable. On our return home, I heard tales of a healing service that brought people to tears and a Eucharist with the joy of a party.
In July, we returned to New Orleans with a group of 15 youth to continue working in homes and areas devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Youth who had been to New Orleans in 2006, were shocked to see some areas of the city were unchanged from their earlier trip. Many of our youth were touched by the strength they found in the residents at a nursing home we visited and the children we played with from the innercity who lived through Katrina.
EYC Kick-Off for the 2007-2008 school year was energetic and fun. We welcomed many new youth and many new leaders. This year middle and high school groups meet in different rooms with different leaders and then join together for dinner. Being separate has allowed each group to adapt programs to the needs and interests of each developmental stage. As part of developing the two groups separately, we have begun to use rooms 4 and 5 for our middle school meetings. These rooms have the feel of an old youth room, built of cinder blocks and virtually indestructible, and are great places for noisy games and energetic play. The “Ramp Room” has acquired more color, low seating, game tables and a TV. All of these changes contribute to a laid back, relaxed space, where the high school group can hang out.
We look forward to the fun that 2008 has in store. There are plans in the works for a ski trip, lock-ins, and a high school retreat. We will be returning to Youth Week at Kanuga in June. And in July, our youth mission trip will be a new experience for everyone. This year David Frazelle and Caren Parker will be leading a group of youth to Sewanee, TN, to work in the rural areas surrounding the University. While there we plan to explore some of the natural wonders and sacred spaces of the Domain of the University of the South.
Thanks so much for the time and energy given by our youth, their parents, and our many leaders. Special thanks to David and Emily Frazelle, Ellen Cole, Dana Campbell, Carter Kersh, Teresa Zucchero, Lynn Williams, Elizabeth Pfeifer, Jimmy Satterwhite, Kate Baylor, Sara Wright, John Allen, Richard Shore, Gracie Killman, Katie Semmler, and everyone else who has supported EYC throughout the year.
