Today
All Saints Procession
Children who wish to participate in the All Saints processional should gather in the dining room at 8:50 am. A few costumes are left on the rack in that room. After the processional, costumed children will sit on the floor between the choir pews through the Baptisms. The children will then be dismissed to their parents in the pews. Please make sure your children find you! Children who would prefer to worship in Children’s Chapel should meet on the playground as usual. Children’s Chapel will have its own saints processional and costumes are welcome. To minimize interruptions in both “Big Church” and Chapel, we ask that children ages 2-7 choose between the 9:00 services and not try to attend both, unless it is to leave Chapel early to join Holy Communion.
The Three Creeds
We are all familiar with the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed, but few of us could recite the Creed of St. Athanasius. Yet, there it is in the Prayer Book, beginning on page 864 in tiny print. What are the stories behind the three creeds? What are the differences and why are they used the way they are in our Liturgy? The Rev. Stephen Elkins-Williams will lead a three-part discussion on the Creeds beginning this morning at 10:20 in the Chapel. We will return to a presentation of faith journeys on Nov. 8 (with Gretchen Jordan) and then continue our conversation on the Creeds on Nov. 15 and 22.
Growing with our Aging Parents
Transitions in life are inevitable, and are often accompanied by a range of emotions and challenges. If you have a parent facing transitions due to aging and are finding that you, too, are being asked to change and grow, consider attending this new monthly support group. The group will meet the first Sunday of the month (today) during the Adult Education time (10:20-11:05) in Room 1 in the basement of the Yates Building. Facilitated by parishioner and clinical psychologist, Ann Baker, this group will give those of us with aging parents a chance to share experiences and support each other as we accompany our parents in this stage of their lives. Questions? Contact Gretchen Jordan or Ann Baker.
Christmas Wreaths
Deck the halls with beautiful, scented balsam wreaths from the great state of Maine. Wottons’ Evergreens has been working with the Chapel of the Cross for the past eleven years, providing us with this unique mission fund-raising opportunity. Buy one for yourself or send one to friends and loved ones for Christmas. Look for university students selling wreaths following the services beginning today.
Episcopal Youth Community at the Movies!
All sixth through twelfth graders are invited to meet at the Lumina Theater in Southern Village at 6:45 pm today. Please bring money to pay for your ticket and any snack you might choose to purchase (tickets cost $8.50). We will be going to see "Where the Wild Things Are"! Please let David Frazelle or Caren Parker know if the cost of this event could keep you from participating, as scholarships are available
Habitat For Humanity Home Dedication
The Chapel of the Cross/UNC Student/St. Paul’s AME Habitat for Humanity Partnership invites all parishioners to join them for the dedication of the new home for Ms. Erika Catalan and her family today at 2:00 pm. You can find directions at www.orangehabitat.org/directions/index.php?Fairview. Potluck refreshments are requested but not required. Please come out and learn more about Habitat for Humanity!
This Week
AM & PM Women's Study
Monday evening, November 2 from 7:30-9:00 pm and Wednesday morning, November 4 from 9:00-10:30 am, the monthly women’s Bible study will convene in the Library. New members are welcome to this once a month time of study, reflection and discussion facilitated by Gretchen Jordan. The topic for the October – May series is women in the Bible. This month’s lesson comes from Judges 11. The December study will be from I Samuel 1 & 2.
Episcopal Campus Ministry
Episcopal Campus Ministry meets in the campus center at 5:30 pm most Tuesdays during the academic term for fellowship, music and a hot dinner. This week we will be exploring "The Gospel According to South Park". Come prepared to explore themes in popular culture relevant to our faith!
Next Week
Faith Journeys
We continue our series of faith journeys next Sunday when Gretchen Jordan shares some of her own spiritual autobiography. The purpose of these programs is to help all of us discern how life experiences shape our relationship with God, and vice versa.
Parish Visitors
Parish Visitors will meet at 2:00 pm on Monday, Nov. 9 in the library. All parishioners are welcome to attend and learn more about this important and rewarding ministry to our homebound members. For more information, contact Bob Comey (call parish office for his number).
Parish Notes
New Church Doors
New doors have been installed at the Franklin Street entrance to the church that allow passersby to enter our sacred space visually at service and other times. The doors are not only inviting to others, but they also remind us of our call to hospitality and to service in the world. The design of the decorative wood tracery is taken directly from the carved stone tracery above the doors and is in keeping with the original architect’s doorway design. The wood is white oak with both exterior and interior finishes carefully matched. The glass is 1/4” tempered glass to ensure quiet, durability and safety. All original handmade door hardware has been carefully reused in mounting the new woodwork, and the net effect is that these beautiful doors seem always to have been there! The original doors are being kept for use in our new construction. Great thanks both to Nancy Tunnessen for her gift in memory of her husband, Walter, and to Jon Whitney and Terry Eason for the design and shepherding of the process, including the review and approval of the Historic District Commission. The new doors will be dedicated at the Epiphany service on Wednesday, January 6.
New Distribution System for Cross Roads
Cross Roads is now designed as a web-based communication, with articles of journal length, color photographs, and graphics which are pleasing to the on-line viewer. Beginning this month, electronic copies of Cross Roads will be the default option. That is to say, that starting with this issue, those on our mailing list will receive a hard copy in the mail only if they explicitly choose to do so. While recognizing that our first aim is always to encourage the reading and savoring of the publication – in any form – we are pursuing this policy in order to be good stewards of the environment, to save printing and mailing costs, and to recognize the increasing primacy of electronic communications in many households. We will provide paper copies, by mail or for office pick-up, to any person who specifically requests them by calling the parish office (929-2193) or sending an email note to info@thechapelofthecross.org. Those reading the electronic version are reminded that all or part of any issue can be printed at home, if needed.
New Book
Congratulations to Dr. Richard Pfaff, priest associate, for the publication of his book, "The Liturgy in Medieval England, A History" by Cambridge University Press!

Stewardship Opportunities
No Live Trees Will Be Hurt
But they don’t last forever, and a 216-year-old university is always carrying pre-enjoyed trees out to its Carolina North wood lot. That’s where The Chapel of the Cross wood cutters, stackers and deliverers will go on one Saturday morning each month this winter. Families in Orange County who heat their homes with wood but can’t afford to buy it really need us. The first date is Nov. 21. We start at 9 a.m. and we’re done by about noon. Anybody can help, and if you have some tools that’s great, but not a pre-requisite. For details, answers to questions about the work, and to get on the mail list contact David Brown by email or call the parish office for his number to be used weekdays.
Fair Trade Sundays
This year, the Outreach Ministry Committee is pleased to sponsor two “fair trade” Sundays, enabling you to get a jump on holiday shopping as well as to support artisans locally and abroad. Shopping fair trade enables disadvantaged artisans the opportunity to make a living wage under safe working conditions. On Nov. 8, we will feature two groups: Mujer a Mujer (Woman to Woman), a group of local Latino jewelry makers supported by Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; and Fiberactive Organics, a company from Raleigh that uses the skills of local Montagnard refugees to produce a variety of goods made from natural fibers. One World Market will display wares for sale from developing countries on Nov. 15. For more information regarding these vendors, see the November issue of Cross Roads and visit www.beadazzledbycecilia.com, www.fiberactiveorganics.com, and www.oneworldmarket.info/.
Community Notices
OCOC becomes Justice United
On Monday, Oct. 26, the Orange County Organizing Committee (OCOC) officially became "Justice United", an independent non-profit organization. The new entity was launched at a meeting of 450 people representing over thirty congregations and other ministries. The rector led a delegation of fifteen Chapel of the Cross parishioners!
The History of African-American Churches
Next Sunday at 3:00 pm at St. Paul AME, the Chapel Hill Historical Society will present the third in the Town, Gown, and Altar series. The Rev. J.R. Manly, Jr., the Rev. Troy F. Harrison, and Professor Reginald Hildebrand will discuss the history of First Baptist, St. Joseph, CME, and St. Paul AME. Following up on our rector’s presentation on the Founding of the Franklin Street Churches last January, this program is free and open to the public.
Johnson Intern Program Second Annual Jewelry
Go through your jewelry drawers and consider making room by giving your seldom (or never) worn jewelry to be sold at the United Church of Chapel Hill Alternative Christmas Market on Nov. 22 and 23. All proceeds from jewelry donated by members of the Chapel of the Cross will benefit the Johnson Intern Program. Contributions of jewelry can be left at either the Chapel of the Cross or at the United Church of Chapel Hill. For questions about the sale contact Susan Gladin (call the Chapel of the Cross parish office to be connected to her) or the Rev. Jill Edens (942-3540, the United Church of Chapel Hill's parish office).
***************
"Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on earth: Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage we may always be supported by this fellowship of love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our intercessions are acceptable through the Spirit, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen."
Book of Common Prayer, p. 395
