Faith Journeys
We complete our series of faith journeys this morning when Gretchen Jordan, Director of Christian Formation, shares her spiritual autobiography at 10:20 am in the chapel. Next week, we will return to our discussion of the three Creeds led by the rector.
Christmas Wreaths
A Student Chaplain from ECM will be available for the next three Sundays (Nov. 8, 15 and 22) to sell wreaths. Please find them outside the church (in inclement weather, in the dining room) between the end of the 9:00 am and the beginning of the 11:15 am services and then again after the 5:15 pm service. Wreaths can also be purchased in the church office during the week. Wreath sales will finish up before Thanksgiving to allow time for delivery.
Fair Trade Sundays
This year, the Outreach Ministry Committee is pleased to sponsor two “fair trade” Sundays, enabling you to get a jump on holiday shopping as well as to support artisans locally and abroad. Shopping fair trade helps disadvantaged artisans make a living wage under safe working conditions. Today we will feature two groups: Mujer a Mujer (Woman to Woman), a group of local Latino jewelry makers supported by Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; and Fiberactive Organics, a company from Raleigh that uses the skills of local Montagnard refugees to produce a variety of goods made from natural fibers. One World Market will display wares for sale from developing countries today. For more information regarding these vendors, see the November issue of Cross Roads and visit www.beadazzledbycecilia.com, www.fiberactiveorganics.com, and www.oneworldmarket.info/.
Episcopal Youth Community
Today sixth and seventh graders will meet at 5:00 pm in rooms 4 and 5 in the basement for fellowship and fun. Eighth through twelfth graders are invited to join Senior EYC from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm in Room 6 in the basement for presentations and discussions on the topic of Faith and Sexuality. Please contact David Frazelle at 929-2193 with questions or for more information.
This Week
Parish Visitors
Parish Visitors will meet at 2:30 pm on Monday, Nov. 9 in the library. All parishioners are welcome to attend and learn more about this important and rewarding ministry to our homebound members. For more information, contact Bob Comey at 969-6577.
RSVVP On Nov. 10
These initials stand for “Restaurants Sharing 10 Percent,” a day on which many local restaurants contribute 10% (V + V) of their total proceeds to benefit the IFC’s hunger relief programs. It’s a wonderful way to treat yourself and support the IFC. You could, for example, begin Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen, have lunch at the Carolina Coffee Shop, and dine that evening at elegant Lantern, all supporting the IFC. For a list of participating restaurants, see the Outreach Ministry Committee table or bulletin board in the dining room, or check the IFC web site.
Episcopal Campus Ministry
Episcopal Campus Ministry meets in the campus center at 5:30 pm most Tuesdays during the academic term for fellowship, music and a hot dinner. On Nov. 10, we will be having a program titled “Where Do You See God in Your Life?” Please bring an item (object, song, picture, etc.) that reminds you of God. On Nov. 17, we will be having a Thanksgiving dinner. Come out and enjoy some turkey and be thankful for friends, family, and ECM!
Parish Notes
Project 5000
Project 5000 food boxes provide emergency food for local families. The IFC is grateful for our donations. You may return your Project 5000 boxes to the church until Nov. 15.
Snack-Bakers Needed
College students love home baked cookies! Exam time is coming up and we would like to offer you the opportunity of supporting our student community with “the gift of sugar” during exams. Last year, many parishioners offered their time, talent and treasure to make the day of beleaguered students. We thank them enormously for this gift and ask that you please consider offering your culinary talents as well. Make as many as you like of the kind you like and deliver them to the church office by Dec. 2. We will package them with an encouraging note. We thank you and look forward to the bounty that will arrive!
Ordination As Deacon
Ross Kane, former Duke Divinity School intern here, was ordained a deacon yesterday in the Diocese of Virginia. He is on the staff of St. Paul, Alexandria.
Forward Day by Day
Every three months, copies of the new edition of Forward Day By Day are made available in the chapel, the dining room, and the parish office. A one page meditation for each day can be a great help to one’s prayer life. This month, the reflection for Nov. 2 contains a wonderful tribute to John Tillson, former parishioner and former husband of Frances Tillson, a regular participant at the 7:30 a.m. service.
Mark Your Calendar
Advent Quiet Day: Advent Reflections With Romanos The Melodious
Join David Frazelle and the Spiritual Life Committee for the annual Advent Quiet Day on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at Camp New Hope. David will be leading Advent reflections based on the homilies of Romanos the Melodious, a 6th-century Byzantine Saint. Discover this ancient priest who speaks with a marvelously contemporary voice, while welcoming the birth of Christ in your own soul. The day will include readings of his homilies, ample time for quiet reflection by the fire, walks outdoors, and breakfast snacks and lunch ($8 donation suggested). Sign up in the church office or by calling 929-2193. For more information, contact Jan Seabock or (call office for number).
ABC Sale 2010...Save the Date!
As we enter the holiday season and the end of the year, perhaps you’re thinking of clearing out some of the extra treasures in your life that you don’t need, use or love. It’s never too early to think about setting those items aside for our 2010 ABC Sale! Our sale date is set for Saturday, April 17. We’re looking for your high quality merchandise that we can sell at a good price. Please save your best donations for us! Proceeds benefit social work organizations right here in our own community. Also, we ask that you mark your calendars now because volunteers are the key to a successful sale. Questions? Contact sale Co-Chairs Christina Balderson (call office for number) or Perri Kersh (call office for number).
Stewardship Opportunities
Stewardship and Spirituality
At a Neighborhood Gathering last week we talked further about spiritual connections to The Chapel of the Cross. Here are some of the expressions of our relationships to this church.
“The most tender and meaningful service for me is Compline. With its wonderful prayer of protection and caring for others who ‘work, watch, or weep’ during the night, it quiets me down and gives me peace at the end of the day.”
“The outstanding musical liturgical expression at The Chapel of the Cross connects me with my own spirituality as a member of the body of Christ. It continually causes me to ask, How I can return and support this gift of love?”
“How do we transform our internal worship and spiritual experience as an Episcopal community of faith and part of the Anglican Communion into a more active, engaged, and positive role in our own society and in the world?”
“All the children give me such joy and hope in the continuing presence of this church.” “We are creating our future.”
As we conclude, we will be asking participants for further evaluation and commentary. This has been an experimental program. We could not find hosts for every neighborhood, and this may not be the right structure. The evaluations will be helpful.
No Live Trees Will Be Hurt
But they don’t last forever, and a 216-year-old university is always carrying pre-enjoyed trees out to its Carolina North wood lot. That’s where The Chapel of the Cross wood cutters, stackers and deliverers will go on one Saturday morning each month this winter. Families in Orange County who heat their homes with wood but can’t afford to buy it really need us. The first date is Nov. 21. We start at 9 am and we’re done by about noon. Anybody can help, and if you have some tools that’s great, but not a pre-requisite. For details, answers to questions about the work, and to get on the mail list contact David Brown or weekdays (call office for number).
