Advent Wreath and Jesse Tree Intergenerational Event

Christmas Wreaths

A Student Chaplain from ECM will be available today to sell wreaths. Please find them outside the church (in inclement weather, in the dining room) between the end of the 9:00 am and the beginning of the 11:15 am services and then again after the 5:15 pm service. Orders must be submitted before noon tomorrow to allow time for delivery.

Advent Book Table

Today following all four services, the Book Table will be available in the parlor to offer books in keeping with the Advent season, as well as Advent calendars, church-themed gifts and other surprises. This sale is a way to support the parish library as well as find seasonally appropriate gifts. Please bring cash or your checkbook, since all sales must be completed today.

Episcopal Youth Community

Sixth through eighth graders will meet from 5:00 pm till 7:00 pm. We will meet in room 4/5 in the basement and head out from there. Ninth through twelfth graders will meet from 6:30 pm till 8:30 pm. We will begin with dinner and head out from there. We will be discussing Hunger and buying food to donate to IFC. This program will include car travel. Current medical/liability forms with parent and youth signatures are required! Please check with Caren Parker if you have any questions .

Attention Young Adults

A group of graduate students, professional students, and other young adults from the Chapel of the Cross and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will go out on Franklin Street for our regularly-scheduled post-Compline refreshments. Look for John Derrick in the cloister after the service. We hope to see you there!

This Week

Episcopal Campus Ministry

The Episcopal Campus Ministry will NOT be having a formal meeting this Tuesday due to Thanksgiving Break; however, if you are still in town, we will be having an informal dinner that night. Please meet at the church at 6:00 pm and we will walk to a restaurant on Franklin Street. Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Next Week

Intergenerational Next Sunday

Next Sunday, Nov. 29 is the first Sunday in Advent and offers our annual Jesse Tree Ornament and Wreath Making intergenerational event. This is for all ages, tot to toddling with cane! There will be oasis wreath forms for sale at $12.00, tinker toy kits for creating a wreath and a favorite, pie pan wreaths. Candle sets are available for $5.00 a set. Jesse Tree ornaments will be created and hung on the dining room tree. Seasonal music and hot cider will fill the parish hallways with the aroma of this time of year!

Parish Notes

God and Me Award

Zan Bell, Sarah Booker, Alice Dempsey, Eleanor Hollers, Alexander Jessup, and Ian Proctor recently completed the God and Me Award. The God and Me program provides an opportunity for elementary school students to explore some of the core elements of our faith through Bible study, discussion, and activities. Please congratulate these students for their hard work and diligence.

Project 5000 Boxes Still Accepted!

Many thanks to all who have participated in Project 5000 this fall. We urge those who still have boxes to fill them and bring them in as soon as possible. Rather than leaving them on the stone wall outside the chapel, please bring them to the bench opposite the parish office door.

Join the Loaves and Fishes Committee

Through the simple act of offering a fresh cup of coffee on Sunday mornings, the mission of the Loaves and Fishes Committee is to nurture parish hospitality. We can be found every Sunday morning after the 9:00 service providing either coffee, from Sept. to mid-June, or lemonade, from mid-June to Sept. The sharing of food and drink is a fundamental way in which we develop bonds within our parish family. Please contact Ellen Cole at (call office for number) or if you are interested in joining us in our work.

Being a Greeter

How do you feel when a friendly person smiles at you and makes you feel welcome? Being a greeter is a lot of fun. You get to meet a lot of people, not necessarily newcomers! If you are interested, please contact Frank Holt at (call office for number).

Attention Fifth Graders

If you are interested in a lead role in the Children’s Christmas Pageant (the almost-rehearsal-free depiction of Luke’s gospel to be held December 19 at 2:30 pm), please return your “top choices” form. If you did not get a form, contact Boykin Bell.

Christmas Flower Memorials and Thanksgivings

Christmas altar flowers, in remembrance or thanksgiving, may be requested by submitting the form that was in the Dec. issue of Cross Roads or by filling out a form found in the parish office. These completed forms need to be returned to the parish office by Friday, Dec. 11 so the names can be put in the Christmas bulletins.

Snack-Bakers Needed

College students love home baked cookies! Exam time is coming up and we would like to offer you the opportunity of supporting our student community with “the gift of sugar” during exams. Last year, many parishioners offered their time, talent and treasure to make the day of beleaguered students. We thank them enormously for this gift and ask that you please consider offering your culinary talents as well. Make as many as you like of the kind you like and deliver them to the church office by Dec. 2. We will package them with an encouraging note. We thank you and look forward to the bounty that will arrive!

Greens Needed

It is time again to ask parishioners to share evergreens from their yards to use in creating wreaths at an intergenerational event on the Sunday after Thanksgiving! Members of the Children and Family Ministry Committee are willing to come to your yards to clip. Please let us know by either contacting Gretchen Jordan or signing up on the Children and Family Ministry bulletin board in the dining room. List your contact number so we can arrange a time on Friday or Saturday to clip. Greens can be dropped off outside the door leading into the dining room near the playground before 10:00 am on Nov. 29. There will be large containers with water for earlier drop-offs.

Advent Devotionals and Offering Boxes

A display of devotional resources for the season of Advent is on the credenza in the dining room. There are new options from previous years: a guide for adults based on writings of C. S. Lewis entitled A Grand Miracle; a booklet for youth entitled This Is So Embarrassing!; a two piece set with a chart and sticker book entitled Symbols Tell the Story for children and an assortment of Advent calendars with the doors to open each day; wreath lighting weekly guides based on Year C scripture. Resources from previous years are also available. All these resources are offered by the parish at no cost. Suzanne Sauter’s wonderful Jesse Tree booklet with ornament patterns to make at home is on display as well. Offering boxes for the special Advent collection are to be returned between Christmas Eve and Epiphany. This collection will benefit a variety of children’s programs in the community.

Tinker Toy Wreaths For New Families

New families with young children who do not have an Advent wreath are invited to make a tinker toy style wreath at the intergenerational event on Nov. 29 at 10:20. This wreath can be used from year to year. The center will be in the library. There will be oasis forms for sale at $12.00 each and candle sets for $5.00 a box at the event.

Advent Quiet Day: Advent Reflections With Romanos The Melodious

Join David Frazelle and the Spiritual Life Committee for the annual Advent Quiet Day on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at Camp New Hope. David will be leading Advent reflections based on the homilies of Romanos the Melodious, a 6th-century Byzantine Saint. Discover this ancient priest who speaks with a marvelously contemporary voice, while welcoming the birth of Christ in your own soul. The day will include readings of his homilies, ample time for quiet reflection by the fire, walks outdoors, and breakfast snacks and lunch ($8 donation suggested). Sign up in the church office or by calling 929-2193. For more information, contact Jan Seabock at or (call office for number).

Christmas Caroling To Homebound Parishioners

Please join us on the Feast of St. Nicholas, Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2:30 pm for our annual Christmas Caroling to Homebound Parishioners. We will gather in the dining room to make a craft for the parishioners, practice our caroling and then depart for caroling to various retirement communities and individual homes. Sign up in advance on the bulletin board in the dining room to help us plan for refreshments. We’ll have rhythm instruments, Santa hats and reindeer antlers to add to the festivities! All are welcome to join us as we spread some holiday cheer this Christmas season. For more information, contact Heather Benjamin at (call office for number).

Reading with a View to Spirituality

For some Advent reading, please join us on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm in the parish library for Saint Augustine’s Confessions. All are welcome. Bring your book and your lunch. For more information, call Raquel Goldberg at (call office for number).

Thanksgiving Day

Almighty and gracious Father, we give you thanks for the fruits of the earth in their season and for the labors of those who harvest them. Make us, we pray, faithful stewards of your great bounty, for the provision of our necessities and the relief of all who are in need, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
