Adult Education Today
Advent Wreath and Jesse Tree Intergenerational Event
Adult Education Next Week
“The Incarnation” with the Rev. Tammy Lee
Intergenerational Event Today
All ages are invited to participate in our annual Jesse Tree ornament making which is located in the Campus Center. Decorate an ornament associated with the lineage of Jesus and hang it on the evergreen tree in the dining room. Fresh green Advent wreaths are being assembled in the dining room along with the sale of candle sets and oasis forms. In the library, new families are invited to assemble a tinker-toy like wreath which can be used from year to year. The youngest can assemble the simple pie pan wreath, also, located in the library. Refreshments will be in the parlor.
Tinker Toy Wreaths for New Families
New families with young children who do not have an Advent wreath are invited to make a tinker toy style wreath at the intergenerational event today at 10:20. This wreath can be used from year to year. The center will be in the library. There will be oasis forms for sale at $12.00 each and candle sets for $5.00 a box at the event.
Episcopal Youth Community
EYC will NOT meet today. We will look forward to gathering again next Sunday for Intergenerational Caroling followed by an EYC Christmas Exchange! This gift exchange will be a White Elephant Exchange. Gifts can be recycled, re-gifted, homemade, or cost less than $5. Youthful voices are appreciated by the homebound folks we visit each year! If you can accompany singers on a portable instrument, that is great too! Please contact Caren Parker with any questions.
Sung Compline
Compline is sung in the church every Sunday evening at 9:30 pm throughout the university semester. All are welcome to this singular opportunity to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” If you would like to sing in the choir or assist in some other way, please contact Dr. Quinn at 929-2193.
Attention Young Adults
A group of graduate students, professional students, and other young adults from the Chapel of the Cross and Holy Trinity Lutheran Church will go out on Franklin Street for our regularly-scheduled post-Compline refreshments. Look for John Derrick in the cloister after the service. We hope to see you there!
This Week
Episcopal Campus Ministry
Episcopal Campus Ministry meets in the campus center at 5:30 pm most Tuesdays during the academic term for fellowship, music and a hot dinner. Please come and join us for a wonderful time of fellowship and dinner. All undergraduate students are welcome! This Tuesday, we’ll celebrate the Eucharist and catch up after the Thanksgiving break.
Snack-Bakers Needed
College students love home baked cookies! Exam time is coming up and we would like to offer you the opportunity of supporting our student community with “the gift of sugar” during exams. Last year, many parishioners offered their time, talent and treasure to make the day of beleaguered students. We thank them enormously for this gift and ask that you please consider offering your culinary talents as well. Make as many as you like of the kind you like and deliver them to the church office by Dec. 2. We will package them with an encouraging note. We thank you and look forward to the bounty that will arrive!
Next Week
Worship Class
The first and second grade worship class will meet next Sunday, Dec. 6 in Room 1. The lesson will be on the liturgical calendar and music in worship. Parents are to pick up their children when the ushers begin directing parishioners to Holy Eucharist.
Parish Notes
A New Tradition
Advent is a time of preparation. This year the children of the parish will help us to prepare for Christmas by gradually building the manger scene from Sunday to Sunday. Each week, children will bring forward one or more items to add to the table display near the pulpit. This will be done during the lighting of the Advent wreath while the congregation is singing the Advent hymn. Watch the scene unfold until all the props and figures are in place. If your child would like to participate, there is a sign up sheet posted on the Christian Formation office door.
Adult Inquirers Class
Any wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church are invited to a series of Monday night classes from 7:30 to 9:00 in the parlor, beginning on Dec. 7. After a second class on Dec. 14, the class will resume in mid-January and continue into the spring.
Call for Soups and Casseroles
We need to replenish our parish freezer with nutritious soups and casseroles for parishioners in need. Please package in small quantities and be sure to label with ingredients and date. If you or someone you know could use some frozen meals to have on hand, please contact the office.
Ecology and Creation DVDs Available for Purchase
As stewards of God’s green earth and as part of the parish’s Creation Cycle, Dr. Norm Christiansen, founding dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University, spoke on “Ecology and Creation.” A 25-minute DVD of his presentation from Sept. 13 is available for $10. Please fill out the order form in the parish office attach a check for $10 made out to the Chapel of the Cross with the following notation: “Rector’s Discretionary Fund/Ecology of Creation DVD.”
Join the Loaves and Fishes Committee
Through the simple act of offering a fresh cup of coffee on Sunday mornings, the mission of the Loaves and Fishes Committee is to nurture parish hospitality. We can be found every Sunday morning after the 9:00 service providing either coffee, from Sept. to mid-June, or lemonade, from mid-June to Sept. The sharing of food and drink is a fundamental way in which we develop bonds within our parish family. Please contact Ellen Cole at [Contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for phone numbers.] if you are interested in joining us in our work.
Being a Greeter
How do you feel when a friendly person smiles at you and makes you feel welcome? Being a greeter is a lot of fun. You get to meet a lot of people, not necessarily newcomers! If you are interested, please contact Frank Holt at [Contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for phone numbers.].
Advent Devotionals & Offering Boxes
A display of devotional resources for the season of Advent is on the credenza in the dining room. There are new options from previous years: a guide for adults based on writings of C. S. Lewis entitled A Grand Miracle; a booklet for youth entitled This Is So Embarrassing!; a two piece set with a chart and sticker book entitled Symbols Tell the Story for children and an assortment of Advent calendars with the doors to open each day; wreath lighting weekly guides based on Year C scripture. Resources from previous years are also available. All these resources are offered by the parish at no cost. Suzanne Sauter’s wonderful Jesse Tree booklet with ornament patterns to make at home is on display as well. Offering boxes for the special Advent collection are to be returned between Christmas Eve and Epiphany. This collection will benefit a variety of children’s programs in the community.
Attention fifth graders
If you are interested in a lead role in the Children’s Christmas Pageant (the almost-rehearsal-free depiction of Luke’s gospel to be held December 19 at 2:30 pm), please return your “top choices” form. If you did not get a form, contact Boykin Bell.
Christmas Flower Memorials and Thanksgivings
Christmas altar flowers, in remembrance or thanksgiving, may be requested by submitting the form that was in the Dec. issue of Cross Roads or by filling out a form found in the parish office. These completed forms need to be returned to the parish office by Friday, Dec. 11 so the names can be put in the Christmas bulletins.
God and Me Award
Zan Bell, Sarah Booker, Alice Dempsey, Eleanor Hollers, Alexander Jessup, and Ian Proctor recently completed the God and Me Award. The God and Me program provides an opportunity for elementary school students to explore some of the core elements of our faith through Bible study, discussion, and activities. Please congratulate these students for their hard work and diligence.

Advent Quiet Day: Advent Reflections with Romanos the Melodious
Join David Frazelle and the Spiritual Life Committee for the annual Advent Quiet Day on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at Camp New Hope. David will be leading Advent reflections based on the homilies of Romanos the Melodious, a 6th-century Byzantine Saint. Discover this ancient priest who speaks with a marvelously contemporary voice, while welcoming the birth of Christ in your own soul. The day will include readings of his homilies, ample time for quiet reflection by the fire, walks outdoors, and breakfast snacks and lunch ($8 donation suggested). Sign up in the church office or by calling 929-2193. For more information, contact Jan Seabock at [Contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for phone numbers.].
Christmas Caroling to Homebound Parishioners
Please join us on the Feast of St. Nicholas, Sunday, Dec. 6, at 2:30 pm for our annual Christmas Caroling to Homebound Parishioners. We will gather in the dining room to make a craft for the parishioners, practice our caroling and then depart for caroling to various retirement communities and individual homes. Sign up in advance on the bulletin board in the dining room to help us plan for refreshments. We’ll have rhythm instruments, Santa hats and reindeer antlers to add to the festivities! All are welcome to join us as we spread some holiday cheer this Christmas season. For more information, contact Heather Benjamin at [Contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for phone numbers.].

For Quiet Confidence
O God of peace, who has taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of your Spirit lift us, we pray, to your presence, where we may be still and know that you are God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
