Episcopal Youth Community
Today sixth -eighth graders will be meeting from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm to hear from some folks who participated in the “Bishop’s Ball” Diocesan retreat, play games, and share plans for the upcoming holiday. Ninth - twelfth graders will meet from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm.
We will begin casting for the Christmas Eve Pageant tonight. Since casting never takes very long, please bring your iPod and a song you want to share. The music can range from Holiday cheer, to something that motivates or energizes you. However it speaks to you - bring it with you and share it! Casting will continue next Sunday for sixth -eighth grades. EYC meets most Sunday evenings, all sixth - twelfth graders are invited to attend. Please contact Caren Parker with any questions.
This Week
Parish Visitors
Parish Visitors will meet at 2:30 pm on Monday, Dec. 14 in the library. All parishioners are welcome to attend and learn more about this important and rewarding ministry to our homebound members. For more information, contact Bob Comey at [Contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for phone numbers.].
Adult Enquirers Class
Any wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church are invited to a series of Monday night classes from 7:30 to 9:00 in the parlor, beginning tomorrow. After tomorrow's gathering about ethics and moral decision, the class will resume in mid-Jan. and continue into the spring.
Episcopal Campus Ministry
There will no meeting of Episcopal Campus Ministry this Tuesday. May you all have a pleasant exam period and safe journeys home. The first meeting of the spring semester will be on January 12 at 5:30 pm.
Children's Christmas Pageant
The Children’s Christmas Pageant will be held Saturday, Dec. 19, at 2:30 pm in the “big church.” This pageant is specifically for parishioners in preschool and elementary school and, unlike the Christmas Eve service, it allows young children to participate in the story-telling, in costume, with no rehearsal. Fifth graders will take the lead roles. All others are invited to borrow angel, shepherd, animal and wise people costumes from the Christian Formation office (or in the dining room, the day of the pageant). A cookie decorating reception will follow the pageant.
Wood You Come on Dec. 19?
The Chapel of the Cross sawyers, splitters, stackers and deliverers will meet at Carolina North Saturday, Dec. 19. Families in Orange County who heat their homes with wood but can’t afford to buy it really need us to help warm their holidays. We start at 9 am and we’re done by about noon. Anybody can do this, and if you have some tools that’s great, but not a pre-requisite. If you can’t make it this time, we’ll be doing it once a month through March. For details, questions about the work, and to get on the email list contact David Brown.

Annual Christmas and Advent Poetry Gathering
For the 12th year, poet and parishioner Michael McFee will host a sharing of seasonal poetry. On Dec. 20 (10:20-11:05 am), participants are invited (but not required!) to bring favorite Advent, Christmas or Epiphany poems to share with others. These can be favorite verses from childhood, recent discoveries or any poem at all that we can read aloud in the spirit of the season. We will gather in the Chapel.
Parish Notes
Parish Instrumentalists Sought
Do you play an instrument? If so, will you play that instrument at the intergenerational carol sing on Jan. 3 following the 10:00 service? Favorite carols of the Christmastide season are played by parish musicians with parishioners joining in singing on a second playing. Contact Gretchen Jordan if you are interested in participating.
A New Tradition
Advent is a time of preparation. This year the children of the parish will help us to prepare for Christmas by gradually building the manger scene from Sunday to Sunday. Each week, children will bring forward one or more items to add to the table display near the pulpit. This will be done during the lighting of the Advent wreath while the congregation is singing the Advent hymn. Watch the scene unfold until all the props and figures are in place. If your child would like to participate, there is a sign up sheet posted on the Christian Formation office door.
The Annual Campaign is Moving Ahead
We are continuing to make progress with pledges. We have 59 new pledgers. We also have 79% of last year’s pledgers now committing for 2010. We need to hear from 123 former pledgers of all ages to catch up to last year’s level. We are also eager to pick up more new pledges. The Vestry is now working on the budget for 2010, and we appreciate if we are able to estimate what we have to work with financially for the new year. Stewardship commitments are so important for our active parish.
– Kris Dahlberg, Director of Stewardship and Development
Call for Soups and Casseroles
We need to replenish our parish freezer with nutritious soups and casseroles for parishioners in need. Please package in small quantities and be sure to label with ingredients and date. If you or someone you know could use some frozen meals to have on hand, please contact the office.
Ecology and Creation DVDs Available for Purchase
As stewards of God’s green earth and as part of the parish’s Creation Cycle, Dr. Norm Christiansen, founding dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University, spoke on “Ecology and Creation.” A 25-minute DVD of his presentation from Sept. 13 is available for $10. Please fill out the order form in the parish office attach a check for $10 made out to the Chapel of the Cross with the following notation: “Rector’s Discretionary Fund/Ecology of Creation DVD.”
Join the Loaves and Fishes Committee
Through the simple act of offering a fresh cup of coffee on Sunday mornings, the mission of the Loaves and Fishes Committee is to nurture parish hospitality. We can be found every Sunday morning after the 9:00 service providing either coffee, from Sept. to mid-June, or lemonade, from mid-June to Sept. The sharing of food and drink is a fundamental way in which we develop bonds within our parish family. Please contact Ellen Cole at [Contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for phone numbers.] if you are interested in joining us in our work.
Advent Devotionals & Offering Boxes
A display of devotional resources for the season of Advent is on the credenza in the dining room. There are new options from previous years: a guide for adults based on writings of C. S. Lewis entitled A Grand Miracle; a booklet for youth entitled This Is So Embarrassing!; a two piece set with a chart and sticker book entitled Symbols Tell the Story for children and an assortment of Advent calendars with the doors to open each day; wreath lighting weekly guides based on Year C scripture. Resources from previous years are also available. All these resources are offered by the parish at no cost. Suzanne Sauter’s wonderful Jesse Tree booklet with ornament patterns to make at home is on display as well. Offering boxes for the special Advent collection are to be returned between Christmas Eve and Epiphany. This collection will benefit a variety of children’s programs in the community.

Stewardship Opportunities
Sharing and Caring - An Alternate Gift
Looking for the perfect gift to honor a dear one? Try Sharing and Caring, the alternate giving plan at The Chapel of the Cross. And it’s so easy to do. Pick up one of the brochures in the church pews, at the back of the chapel, or at the Outreach Ministry Table. Select one or more of the five designated charities you wish to support. Fill in the brochure and take it along with your check (or cash!) to the Outreach Ministry Table in the dining room (or to the office during weekdays.) They will, in turn, give you gift cards you can send on to the persons of your choosing. How simple is that? And remember, you are giving TWICE! Organizations being supported this year are Kwasa School in South Africa, Inter-faith Council (IFC), Freedom House, Club Nova, and the Family Violence and Rape Crisis Service. Sharing and Caring will be available for the next two Sundays leading up to Christmas.
A Christmas Request for Our Refugee Families
Please consider buying a gift card to Wal Mart, Target or Food Lion to help our two refugee families have a happy holiday season. Between the two families, there are six children and seven adults. Gift cards would go a long way toward buying warm coats and nourishing food for the winter months. Gift cards can be left in the church office. If you have questions, please call Gale Gilchrist (call church office for her phone number). Thank you so much.
Holiday Meal Coupons
For a contribution of $25, the IFC can provide a holiday meal for an entire family. If you would like to share your blessings in this way, it’s easy: pick up a coupon with instructions from the Outreach Ministry table, or from the committee’s bulletin board, both in the dining room, or directly from the IFC web site. Fill out the form and send, with your check, to the IFC at 110 W. Main Street, Carrboro, NC 27510. You will make someone’s holidays much brighter.

For the Poor and Neglected
Almighty and most merciful God, we remember before you all poor and neglected persons whom it would be easy for us to forget: the homeless and the destitute, the old and the sick, and all who have none to care for them. Help us to heal those who are broken in body or spirit, and to turn their sorrow into joy. Grant this, Father, for the love of your Son, who for our sake became poor, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
