Intergenerational Event: Prison Ministry

1st & 2nd Worship Class

The monthly class will convene today in Room 2 in the basement at 8:45 am. The session is on prayer. Parents are reminded to pick up children when the ushers direct the congregation to Holy Eucharist.

Explaining Mission Work To Kids

This Sunday, we will have a parent gathering to help parents explain (to kids at home) our church mission work. Our 2010 Lenten offering will be for El Hogar in Honduras and we want our young parishioners to have a better understanding of how COTC supports an Episcopal mission so far away. Beth Carlton, a parish parent and member of a past mission team, has created a program to help parents engage their children both with the spirit of mission work and the spirit of giving. Please join us in the library at 10:20 this Sunday morning to learn more.

Women's Retreat

A reminder to all registrants that your final payment is due today. At 8:45 this morning, a sign up sheet for massages will be posted on the Christian Formation door. The number is very limited. The therapist is offering 30 minute sessions for $30.00.

Episcopal Youth Community

Sixth through eighth graders will meet at 5:00 pm today and ninth through twelfth at 7:00 pm. The Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) welcomes all 6-12th graders. We meet most Sunday evenings for fellowship, food, and fun. If you are interested in receiving more information about EYC at the Chapel of the Cross please email Caren Parker or call 929-2193.

Sung Compline

Compline is sung in the church every Sunday evening at 9:30 pm throughout the university semester. All are welcome to this singular opportunity to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” If you would like to sing in the choir or assist in some other way, please email Dr. Quinn or call 929-2193.

This Week

Adult Inquirers Class

Any wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church are invited to a series of Monday night classes from 7:30 to 9:00 in the parlor. Vicky Jamieson-Drake will lead tomorrow’s gathering, which will be focused on Holy Scripture.

Episcopal Campus Ministry

Episcopal Campus Ministry meets in the campus center at 5:30 pm most Tuesdays during the academic term for fellowship, music and a hot dinner. Please come and join us for a wonderful time of fellowship and dinner. All undergraduate students are welcome!

Next Week

“I Was in Prison, You Visited Me”

This mandate from Matthew 25 is often one of the more difficult to grasp and practice for many. Did you know that our parish has a history of support and involvement with the Orange Correctional Center in Hillsborough? Next Sunday at 10:20 am, come learn about the center, the ministry of Chaplain Barker, and our church’s support and involvement. Hear from Terry Johnston and Kristen Smith who are part of the Tuesday night Yokefellows Ministry. This intergenerational event for 2nd graders through adults will begin in the chapel with an engaging presentation and conclude in the dining room as we all assemble special occasion card packets for residents at the Orange Center.

Parish Notes

Vestry Nominations

The nomination period for election of vestry members opens today. You may pick up a nomination form and review a list of eligible parishioners in the dining room. There is a box in the dining room in which you may place your nominations. Those who nominate parishioners should secure permission of the nominee before making the nomination. Nominators are also responsible for asking the nominee to complete a biographical questionnaire by the close of the nomination period.

2010 Youth Mission Trip

This summer’s senior high mission trip will be to Sewanee, TN. For some of you this will be a return to a wonderful place and for others an entirely new experience. The trip will take place Aug. 1 through 7. We are planning to fly or travel by bus to Tennessee. The cost to families will be $700. PLEASE contact Caren Parker if a scholarship from the church would be helpful. This covers all costs except a very small amount of spending money for souvenirs and incidentals. We have 20 spaces for youth and all rising 9th to just-graduated seniors are welcome. In the case of a shortage of spaces, priority will go to youth who participate at the Chapel of the Cross. Applications are due by next Sunday. If you are offered a space on the trip a $200 deposit will be due on February 15. $250 will be due April 1 and the final $250 July 1. The Spirit always does interesting, life-giving, joyful, unpredictable and transformative things on these trips, as we engage the practices of Christianity. Please email Caren Parker.

Book Drive for Rwandan Children

Episcopal Campus Ministry is organizing a book drive for Nkondo 1 Primary School in Rwinkwavu, Rwanda. Former student chaplain Myles Winn (09) currently works for the school, and ECM is trying to help him out by building the school a library! English became the official language of Rwanda last year, and without the supplies the students are suffering to learn their new national language. Donations will be picked up by ECM students between the services on Sunday, Jan. 24 and Sunday, Jan. 31. There is also a drop box located in the hall outside of the campus center. Donations are also accepted to help defray the cost of shipping. Items needed include any and all children’s books, as well as more mature literature to help an older child learn how to read.

Help With the 11:15 Reception!

You’ve attended it, now help put it on. We need folks to bring a plate of something to share (whatever you want) or to help with set up or break down. However you want to contribute, we are excited to have you. The reception is a great way to get to know your fellow parishioners, so please come if you don’t already. Groups are welcome to host if they would like. This is a good way to let everyone know what your Girl Scout or Habitat crew is doing. Email beagdragun@yahoo.com.

Join the Loaves and Fishes Committee

Through the simple act of offering a fresh cup of coffee on Sunday mornings, the mission of the Loaves and Fishes Committee is to nurture parish hospitality. We can be found every Sunday morning after the 9:00 service providing either coffee, from Sept. to mid-June, or lemonade, from mid-June to Sept. The sharing of food and drink is a fundamental way in which we develop bonds within our parish family. Please contact email Ellen Cole or call (call office for number) if you are interested in joining us in our work.

Thank You For Soups and Casseroles

Thanks to all who have generously restocked our freezer with soups and casseroles for those in need. We have a good supply for the time being. If you or someone you know is in need of something, please call the office. Remember this food is given lovingly for all of us to use as needed. You don’t have to be in a dire situation - if you are having one of those days or weeks and could use a premade meal or some soup to soothe the body and soul - and feed the tummy, call the office or just stop by to pick something up. We are called to care for one another. We all have our times where we can give and those when we could use a helping hand.

Thank You From the Johnson Interns

The Johnson Interns wish to thank everyone who participated in the meal preparation program last Friday with Stop Hunger Now. In one afternoon we were able to package 10,000 meals that are now on their way to Haiti. Thank you to the Redwoods Group for providing the ingredients and to Freedom House for hosting the event and for helping staff the project. Thank you to all the Board Members and friends of JIP who showed up. And kudos to Stop Hunger Now for being such an efficient program that gets food where it needs to go.

Stewardship Opportunities

Now Is The Time!

Did you know that all profits made from the ABC sales is returned to the community? Last year $27,000 was distributed to 21 local organizations. This year we’d like to do even better. But in order to know who needs the money, we need your help. Please encourage your favorite community organization to apply for an ABC grant. To do this, direct their executive director or grant writer to The Chapel of the Cross website. To read guidelines and find an application form, go to thechapelofthecross.org. Pull down Outreach and click on Outreach Funding Requests. Then click on ABC Sale Funds and Disbursement. Appllications will be accepted until March 31. Direct questions to Terry Johnston, ABC Subcommitte chair.

Gearing Up For ABC Sale 2010!

The 2010 ABC Sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 17 and we need your time, talents and treasures to make it a huge success. Here are just a few of the ways you can help:

  • If your storage “runneth over” in this post-holiday season, we hope you’ll set aside your best donations for us and deliver them to the church during sale week.
  • Save your brown paper bags! We’ll be collecting those in the coming months to use on sale day.
  • Consider chairing a department, volunteering your time, helping to store or pick up large items prior to the sale. Many hands make light work--and you’ll be rewarded with rich fellowship with fellow parishioners!
  • Make a cash donation to help fund our Treasured Affair event, our volunteer snacks during sale week, or to simply go towards supplies.

The more donations we receive, the more money we can give to support local charities after the sale. Want to help? (We know you do!) Contact sale Co-Chairs Christina Balderson (call office for number) or Perri Kersh (call office for number). We look forward to hearing from you.

Womens's Voice Concert

“Ain’t I a Woman!” a winter concert by Women’s Voices Chorus, will take place today at 3:00 pm at University United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. For more information contact (call office for number), email allan@duke.edu , or click here. Tickets available at the door, $15 adults, $5 students, discount rate available for groups of 10 or more if you arrange with us in advance. The concert’s title comes from the famous words of Sojourner Truth at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in 1851, and features songs about heroines through the ages. From Old Testament heroines to the Virgin Mary, from Abraham Lincoln’s mother to unnamed women toiling at factories and homes, this concert sings of the strength and grace of women, both young and old.

Prayer for the Week - For the Unity of the Church

Almighty Father, whose blessed Son before his passion prayed for his disciples that they might be one, as you and he are one: Grant that your Church, being bound together in love and obedience to you, may be united in one body by the one Spirit, that the world may believe in him whom you have sent, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
