Intergenerational Event: Prison Ministry
Adult Education Next Week
A Report from the Johnson Intern Program
Today
“I was in prison, you visited me”
This mandate from Matthew 25 is often one of the more difficult to grasp and practice for many. Did you know that our parish has a history of support and involvement with the Orange Correctional Center in Hillsborough? Today at 10:20 am, come learn about the center, the ministry of Chaplain Barker, and our church’s support and involvement. Hear from Terry Johnston and Kristen Smith who are part of the Tuesday night Yokefellows Ministry. This intergenerational event for 2nd graders through adults will begin in the chapel with an engaging presentation and conclude in the dining room as we all assemble special occasion card packets for residents at the Orange Center.
Free Soup Lunch
Join us for Soup Before Hoops, a FREE lunch today at 12:30 pm in rooms 4 and 5 in the basement. Sample soups from your favorite Chapel Hill restaurants and enjoy fellowship with friends and neighbors. After, head to the Dean Dome to watch the Tar Heels take on the Cavaliers!
Episcopal Youth Community
Sixth through eighth graders will meet at 5:00 pm today and ninth through twelfth at 6:30 pm. The Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) welcomes all 6-12th graders. We meet most Sunday evenings for fellowship, food, and fun. If you are interested in receiving more information about EYC at the Chapel of the Cross please contact Caren Parker at 929-2193.
2010 Youth Mission Trip
This summer’s senior high mission trip will be to Sewanee, TN. Applications are due TODAY. If you are offered a space on the trip a $200 deposit will be due on February 15. $250 will be due April 1 and the final $250 July 1. The Spirit always does interesting, life-giving, joyful, unpredictable and transformative things on these trips, as we engage the practices of Christianity. Please contact Caren Parker.
Sung Compline
Compline is sung in the church every Sunday evening at 9:30 pm throughout the university semester. All are welcome to this singular opportunity to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” If you would like to sing in the choir or assist in some other way, please contact Dr. Quinn at 929-2193.
This Week
Adult Inquirers Class
Any wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church are invited to a series of Monday night classes from 7:30 to 9:00 in the parlor. Dr. Richard Pfaff will lead tomorrow’s gathering, which will focus on how Anglicans believe.
Episcopal Campus Ministry
Episcopal Campus Ministry meets in the campus center at 5:30 pm most Tuesdays during the academic term for fellowship, music and a hot dinner. Please come and join us for a wonderful time of fellowship and dinner. All undergraduate students are welcome!
Parish Notes
Vestry Nominations
The nomination period for election of vestry members is now open. You may pick up a nomination form and review a list of eligible parishioners in the dining room. There is a box in the dining room in which you may place your nominations. Those who nominate parishioners should secure permission of the nominee before making the nomination. Nominators are also responsible for asking the nominee to complete a biographical questionnaire by the close of the nomination period on Feb. 7.
Book Drive for Rwandan Children
Episcopal Campus Ministry is organizing a book drive for Nkondo 1 Primary School in Rwinkwavu, Rwanda. Former student chaplain Myles Winn (09) currently works for the school, and ECM is trying to help him out by building the school a library! English became the official language of Rwanda last year, and without the supplies the students are suffering to learn their new national language. Donations will be picked up by ECM students between the services today. There is also a drop box located in the hall outside of the campus center. Donations are also accepted to help defray the cost of shipping. Items needed include children’s books, picture books, young adult fiction, mysteries, novels, biographies, dictionaries/encyclopedias and old textbooks (especially science materials).
Help with the 11:15 reception!
You’ve attended it, now help put it on. We need folks to bring a plate of something to share (whatever you want) or to help with set up or break down. However you want to contribute, we are excited to have you. The reception is a great way to get to know your fellow parishioners, so please come if you don’t already. Groups are welcome to host if they would like. This is a good way to let everyone know what your Girl Scout or Habitat crew is doing. Contact Claire Ellington.
Join the Loaves and Fishes Committee
Through the simple act of offering a fresh cup of coffee on Sunday mornings, the mission of the Loaves and Fishes Committee is to nurture parish hospitality. We can be found every Sunday morning after the 9:00 service providing either coffee, from Sept. to mid-June, or lemonade, from mid-June to Sept. The sharing of food and drink is a fundamental way in which we develop bonds within our parish family. Please contact Ellen Cole at [contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for personal phone numbers] if you are interested in joining us in our work.
Chapel Bell Repair
The clapper of the chapel bell had deteriorated badly and is being rebuilt. The bell was originally given to the Chapel of the Cross in 1890 by Christ Church, Raleigh, when they replaced theirs with a new one.
Thank You for Your Generosity
An incomplete tally of parishioners’ donations of food and toiletries deposited in baskets in the church for the IFC this past year totals $2,820. This does not include the 265 boxes filled with food collected during Project 5000, nor alternative gifts designated for the IFC during Advent and Christmas, nor holiday meals. Thank you for sharing your blessings so generously, in ways that make a difference for others in our community. A list of current needs for food and volunteers at the IFC is posted on the Outreach Ministry Committee bulletin board in the dining room.
Thank you for Soups and Casseroles!
Thanks to all who have generously restocked our freezer with soups and casseroles for those in need. We have a good supply for the time being. If you or someone you know is in need of something, please call the office. Remember this food is given lovingly for all of us to use as needed. You don’t have to be in a dire situation - if you are having one of those days or weeks and could use a premade meal or some soup to soothe the body and soul - and feed the tummy, call the office or just stop by to pick something up. We are called to care for one another. We all have our times where we can give and those when we could use a helping hand.
Thank you from Johnson Interns
The Johnson Interns wish to thank everyone who participated in the meal preparation program a week ago Friday with Stop Hunger Now. In one afternoon we were able to package 10,000 meals that are now on their way to Haiti. Thank you to the Redwoods Group for providing the ingredients and to Freedom House for hosting the event and for helping staff the project. Thank you to all the Board Members and friends of JIP who showed up. And kudos to Stop Hunger Now for being such an efficient program that gets food where it needs to go.

Stewardship Opportunities
Join the Bread Ministry
Want to help welcome our newcomers? It’s easy when you join the bread committee as a baker or as a delivery person. The time commitment is small, but the impact on our efforts to reach out to our newcomers is immeasurable. If you are interested in joining us in this appreciated and rewarding endeavor, please contact Josue Jenkin at [contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for personal phone numbers] or Sandy Edgerly at [contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for personal phone numbers].
Help Us Keep the Streak Alive
We’ve had two very successful days of wood cutting and delivery this winter, and we need two more. The first of them will be Saturday, Feb. 13. The bigger the crew, the faster it goes, and the more wood we can get to families in Orange County who use it to heat their homes but can’t afford to buy it. We start at 9:00 am at Carolina North and we’re usually done before noon. The wood’s on the ground waiting for us — anybody can do this, and if you have some tools that’s great, but not a pre-requisite. For details, answers to questions about the work, and to get on the email list contact David Brown at [contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for personal phone numbers] weekdays.
Now is the Time!
Did you know that all proceeds from the ABC sales are returned to the community? Last year $27,000 was distributed to 21 local organizations. This year we’d like to do even better. But in order to know who needs the money, we need your help. Please encourage your favorite community organization to apply for an ABC grant. To do this, direct their executive director or grant writer to The Chapel of the Cross website. To read guidelines and find an application form, go to thechapelofthecross.org. Pull down Outreach and click on Outreach Funding Requests. Then click on ABC Sale Funds and Disbursement. Appllications will be accepted until March 31. Direct questions to Terry Johnston, ABC Subcommitte chair.
The 2010 ABC Sale Needs You!
As you can imagine, it takes hundreds of volunteers to run a successful ABC Sale. There are numerous opportunities to GIVE--your time, your quality goods for the sale, baked goods, gardening items, financial donations to purchase snacks for volunteers and supplies, and more! Visit us in the dining room after the 9:00 and 11:15 services to sign up and get more information, or visit http://www.thechapelofthecross.org/images/pdfs/ABC%20Sale/volunteer2010.pdf to fill out a volunteer form. Questions about how you can help? Contact sale Co-Chairs Christina Balderson ([contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for personal phone numbers]) or Perri Kersh ([contact the parish office at 919-929-2193 for personal phone numbers]). We look forward to hearing from you!
Prayer for the Week - The Presentation - February 2
Almighty and everliving God, we humbly pray that, as your only-begotten Son was this day presented in the temple, so we may be presented to you with pure and clean hearts by Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
- Book of Common Prayer, p. 239
