Learn More About The Johnson Interns
Who are they and what do they do? Their official description says that “the Johnson Internship Program blends social ministry, intellectual inquiry, and intentional community living into a year that enables young adults to explore their spiritual life within a context of servant leadership.” Find out what that really means. Please gather in the chapel at 10:20 this morning.
Growing With Our Aging Parents
Transitions in life are inevitable, and are often accompanied by a range of emotions and challenges. If you have a parent facing transitions due to aging and are finding that you, too, are being asked to change and grow, consider attending this monthly support group. The group will meet the first Sunday of the month at 10:20 am in Room 1. Facilitated by parishioner and clinical psychologist Ann Baker, this group will give those of us with aging parents a chance to share experiences and support each other as we accompany our parents in this stage of their lives. Contact Ann at with questions about this program.
Outreach Ministry Committee Meeting
The Outreach Ministry Committee will meet today at 1:00 pm in the library. We will continue working on the process of reassessing and prioritizing recommendations for funding community organizations. Interested parishioners are always welcome. Please contact Barbara Tremblay at if you wish to attend.
Vestry Nominations Due Today
The nomination period for election of vestry members closes today. You may pick up a nomination form and review a list of eligible parishioners in the dining room. There is a box in the dining room in which you may place your nominations. Those who nominate parishioners should secure permission of the nominee before making the nomination. Nominators are also responsible for asking the nominee to complete a biographical questionnaire.
Episcopal Youth Community
Sixth through eighth graders will meet at 5:00 pm today in the campus center for fellowship and to watch the Super Bowl! Please arrange for pick-up at halftime. Ninth through twelfth graders will meet at 6:00 pm at the home of Sam Williams to watch the game. Contact Caren Parker at for directions and details. The Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) welcomes all 6-12th graders. We meet most Sunday evenings for fellowship, food, and fun.
Sung Compline
Compline is sung in the church every Sunday evening at 9:30 pm throughout the university semester. All are welcome to this singular opportunity to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” If you would like to sing in the choir or assist in some other way, please contact Dr. Quinn, 929-2193.
This Week

Tuesday Morning Bible Study
The Mary Harris Bible Class meets Tuesday mornings in the parish library from 8:30 to 9:30. All are welcome to join in these discussions. For more information, please email Mary Schoenfeld or (call office for number).
Episcopal Campus Ministry
Episcopal Campus Ministry meets in the campus center at 5:30 pm most Tuesdays during the academic term for fellowship, music and a hot dinner. Please come and join us for a wonderful time of fellowship and dinner. All undergraduate students are welcome!

Parish Notes
Prison Intergenerational Event Rescheduling
The event which was cancelled due to the snow last Sunday will be rescheduled later in the winter or spring. The new date will be announced as soon as Adult Education and Children and Family Ministry committees make a decision.
2010 Youth Mission Trip
Because of the recent winter storm the application deadline has been extended to Feb. 9. This summer’s senior high mission trip will be to Sewanee, TN. If you are offered a space on the trip a $200 deposit will be due on February 15, $250 will be due April 1, and the final $250 July 1. The Spirit always does interesting, life-giving, joyful, unpredictable and transformative things on these trips, as we engage the practices of Christianity. Please contact Caren Parker.
New Dinner Groups
If you were unable to sign up for a Foyer Dinner Group in the fall and would like to be part of a group now, please pick up a form in the parish hall or online. Foyer Dinner Groups meet about once a month. Dinners are casual and the 10 participants take turns hosting the meals. Contact Sandy Gerow, or (call office for number) if you have questions. Completed forms should be in the parish office by February 15.
Book Drive For Rwandan Children
Episcopal Campus Ministry is organizing a book drive for Nkondo 1 Primary School in Rwinkwavu, Rwanda. Former student chaplain Myles Winn (09) currently works for the school, and ECM is trying to help him out by building the school a library! English became the official language of Rwanda last year, and without the supplies the students are suffering to learn their new national language. Donations will be picked up by ECM students between the services today. There is also a drop box located in the hall outside of the campus center. Donations are also accepted to help defray the cost of shipping. Items needed include children’s books, picture books, young adult fiction, mysteries, novels, biographies, dictionaries/encyclopedias and old textbooks (especially science materials).
Mission Trip To Bay St. Louis
The Carolina Connection is headed back to Bay St. Louis March 3 - 9. Join parishioners from other churches across the state. To talk to Chapel of the Cross parishioners who have taken this trip, contact Barbara Tremblay or (call office for number). For more information on the upcoming trip, contact Rebecca Yarbrough.
Help With The 11:15 Reception!
You’ve attended it, now help put it on. We need folks to bring a plate of something to share (whatever you want) or to help with set up or break down. However you want to contribute, we are excited to have you. The reception is a great way to get to know your fellow parishioners, so please come if you don’t already. Groups are welcome to host if they would like. This is a good way to let everyone know what your Girl Scout or Habitat crew is doing. Email.
Join The Loaves And Fishes Committee
Through the simple act of offering a fresh cup of coffee on Sunday mornings, the mission of the Loaves and Fishes Committee is to nurture parish hospitality. We can be found every Sunday morning after the 9:00 service providing either coffee, from Sept. to mid-June, or lemonade, from mid-June to Sept. The sharing of food and drink is a fundamental way in which we develop bonds within our parish family. Please contact Ellen Cole (call office for number) if you are interested in joining us in our work.
Stewardship Opportunities
Join The Bread Ministry
Want to help welcome our newcomers? It’s easy when you join the bread committee as a baker or as a delivery person. The time commitment is small, but the impact on our efforts to reach out to our newcomers is immeasurable. If you are interested in joining us in this appreciated and rewarding endeavor, please contact Josue Jenkin at (call office for number) or Sandy Edgerly (call office for number).
Help Us Keep The Streak Alive
We’ve had two very successful days of wood cutting and delivery this winter, and we need two more. The first of them will be Saturday, Feb. 13. The bigger the crew, the faster it goes, and the more wood we can get to families in Orange County who use it to heat their homes but can’t afford to buy it. We start at 9:00 am at Carolina North and we’re usually done before noon. The wood’s on the ground waiting for us — anybody can do this, and if you have some tools that’s great, but not a pre-requisite. For details, answers to questions about the work, and to get on the email list contact David Brown at (call office for number) weekdays.
Now Is The Time!
Did you know that all proceeds from the ABC sale are returned to the community? Last year $27,000 was distributed to 21 local organizations. This year we’d like to do even better. But in order to know who needs the money, we need your help. Please encourage your favorite community organization to apply for an ABC grant. To do this, direct their executive director or grant writer to The Chapel of the Cross website. To read guidelines and find an application form, go to thechapelofthecross.org, under Outreach. Applications will be accepted until March 31. Direct questions to Terry Johnston, ABC Subcommittee chair.
The 2010 ABC Sale Needs You!
There are numerous opportunities to GIVE – your time, your quality goods for the sale, baked goods, gardening items, financial donations to purchase snacks for volunteers and supplies, and more! Visit us in the dining room after the 9:00 and 11:15 services to sign up and get more information, or click here to fill out a volunteer form. Questions about how you can help? Contact sale Co-Chairs Christina Balderson (call office for number) or Perri Kersh (call office for number). We look forward to hearing from you!
Absalom Jones (February 13)
Set us free, heavenly Father, from every bond of prejudice and fear; that, honoring the steadfast courage of your servant Absalom Jones, we may show forth in our lives the reconciling love and true freedom of the children of God, which you have given us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
