Parish Annual Meeting (Church at 10:00 am)

Today

Jesus as Hebrew Scripture Prophet

This four-part series taught by David Jamieson-Drake will explore how the Hebrew Scripture prophetic tradition can be applied to the life, words, and signs of Jesus and yet add up to so much more. In the first session, Word of the Prophet, the focus will be on typical elements of the messages of Hebrew Bible prophets and of Jesus. Prophetic acts that both signify the prophet’s authority from God or form part of their message will be the topic of the second session. The third session will explore the way in which disciples of the prophets in the Hebrew Bible began to understand the stories of the prophets’ lives as part of God’s message to the people. In the final session, More Than a Prophet, David will discuss how Jesus transcended the prophetic role in his words and deeds. Sunday mornings, Feb. 21, March 7, 14 and 21.

Lenten Book Table

Plan on stopping by the Lenten Book Table in the parlor which will be open today after every service and next Sunday after the three morning services. We can accept only cash or checks. All proceeds will benefit the parish library. The table will feature Lent and Easter books for children, teens and adults; red and white Episcopal-humor T-Shirts-just right for Valentine’s Day; plaques for baptismal candidates; books to complement the Lenten evening study series; and some surprises.

Newcomers' Orientation Session

All those who consider themselves newcomers are invited to an orientation session led by the rector today at 10:20 am in the choir room. Come meet staff members and other newcomers and learn more about the ministry and history of the Chapel of the Cross.

Episcopal Youth Community

Join EYC today for food, fellowship and fun! Sixth through twelfth graders will meet from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. Please contact Caren Parker with questions or concerns. March 5 and 6, EYC (sixth through twelfth grades) will be joining St. Paul’s in Cary for a service-oriented lock-in. Please save the date. Join us during today’s meeting to learn more about this event.

Sung Compline

Compline is sung in the church every Sunday evening at 9:30 pm throughout the university semester. All are welcome to this singular opportunity to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” If you would like to sing in the choir or assist in some other way, please contact Dr. Quinn.

This Week

Adult Enquirers' Class

Any wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church are invited to a series of Monday night classes from 7:30 to 9:00 in the parlor. Tammy Lee will lead tomorrow’s gathering on the Book of Common Prayer.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study

The Mary Harris Bible Class meets Tuesday mornings in the parish library from 8:30 to 9:30. The class is reading Isaiah and considering questions such as: what will God’s Kingdom be like according to Isaiah, what insights are gained from studying Isaiah, and how are they relevant to our lives? All are welcome to join in these discussions. For more information, please email Mary Schoenfeld.

Episcopal Campus Ministry

Episcopal Campus Ministry meets in the campus center at 5:30 pm most Tuesdays during the academic term for fellowship, music and a hot dinner. Please come and join us for a wonderful time of fellowship and dinner. All undergraduate students are welcome!

Lenten Supper and Discussion

Please join us on five Thursday evenings beginning Feb. 25 for a simple supper (soup, bread, fruit) and lively discussion. Together, we will watch portions of the WGBH production, “Justice with Michael Sandel” and ask what different schools of philosophical thought mean to us as Christians. We will start with Utilitarianism, the true 19th-century murder case of “the Queen v. Dudley and Stephens” and cannabalism! A buffet supper will be served in the dining room from 5:30-6:00. The video will start promptly at 6:00 and a discussion led (this week) by the Rev. Tammy Lee and Boykin Bell will follow (discussion leaders will change each week). No sign-up or background in philosophy needed. For more information about the series or to watch full episodes, go to www.justiceharvard.org.

Next Week

Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the Chapel of the Cross will take place in the church next Sunday from 10:00 to 11:00 am. All communicants and interested parishioners are invited to come and meet the vestry candidates and hear about the financial health of the parish, including the 2009 report, the 2010 budget, and the status of the master plan and the capital campaign. This once-a-year meeting is a significant part of our parish’s ministry and governance.

1st & 2nd Grade Worship Class

The class will meet on February 28 and again on March 21 during the 9:00 service in Room 2 in the basement. The lesson for February is on Lent and the disciplines associated with the season. Parents are reminded to come for children at the time ushers direct parishioners to Holy Eucharist.

Women's Bible Study

On March 1 at 7:30 pm and on March 3 at 9:00 am, women will gather in the library for the monthly bible study on women of the Bible. Esther is the lesson for March. New members welcome.

Parish Notes

2010 Vestry Nominees

This year’s vestry nominees are Chrys Bullard, Alice Cotten, Nancy McGuffin, Pat Meacham, John Stoller, Dick Taylor, Julia Teasley and Joel Wagoner. Vestry elections will take place on March 21 during all Sunday services at the Chapel of the Cross. Biographical information about each nominee will appear in the March issue of our parish newsletter, Cross Roads, and each nominee will speak briefly at the Annual Parish Meeting next Sunday.

Quiet Days Away

Consider spending a day or two in prayer and reflection during the week of March 14-19. A lake front home on Lake Gaston (70 miles from the Chapel of the Cross) will provide the space (6 bedrooms); simple meals will be prepared and the daily offices will be facilitated by Gretchen Jordan. $25.00 per night. Brochures with additional information are available in the dining room. Sign up is posted on the Christian Formation office door.

Devotional Resource and Offering Boxes

Pick up a Lenten offering box and a devotional resource in the dining room to use during the season. The special Lenten offering will purchase food for the children and young adults at the El Hogar Ministries in Honduras. Due to recent turmoil in Honduras, food is the greatest need. As little as $15.00 will purchase as much as 250 oranges or bananas! Your donations do qualify towards the MDGs asking of 0.7% of your net income! There is an assortment of devotional resources for all ages displayed on the credenza in the dining room.

Shrove Tuesday Thank You

‘Cakes, community and conversation bubbled throughout the dining room as parishioners came together to celebrate Shrove Tuesday. We give our heartfelt thanks to everyone who pitched in to make the event happen.'
- Valerie Bateman & Lorraine McBride

Join the Loaves and Fishes Committee

Through the simple act of offering a fresh cup of coffee on Sunday mornings, the mission of the Loaves and Fishes Committee is to nurture parish hospitality. We can be found every Sunday morning after the 9:00 service providing either coffee, from Sept. to mid-June, or lemonade, from mid-June to Sept. The sharing of food and drink is a fundamental way in which we develop bonds within our parish family. Please contact Ellen Cole if you are interested in joining us in our work.

Calling All Volunteers for the 2010 ABC Sale

The ABC Sale is just two months away (Saturday, April 17) and we still have important department co-chair positions that MUST be filled! We are currently seeking a co-chair for the following departments: Sorting, Treasures, Cook’s Corner and Large Item Pickup. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your time and talents with The Chapel of the Cross AND enjoy all of the benefits of fun and fellowship during sale week. Please visit us in the dining room after the 9am and 11:15am services for more information. If your time is tight during sale week but you’re looking for other ways to give, consider making a financial donation to help us cover the cost of volunteer snacks during the week; bake something for our bake sale; or simply set aside your best donations to bring in during sale week. If you have questions, please contact ABC Sale Co-Chairs Christina Balderson or Perri Kersh. You can also find out more about the sale on the ABC Sale page. We look forward to hearing from you!

Faith, Hope & Love: When One Suffers From a Mental Illness

Faith Connections on Mental Illness will present a panel of local clery and clients addressing how one’s faith and the faith community can play an essential role when dealing with the pain, isolation and stigma resulting from a mental illness. This event will take place Sunday, Feb. 21 at 3:00 pm at Binkley Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Panelists include: the Rev. Steve Hickle (Fairmont UMC), the Rev. Emmanuel Katongole (Duke Divinity School), and the Rev. Dale Osborne (Binkley Baptist Church). This forum is free and open to the public and is especially recommended for clergy/religious leaders, professionals in the field of mental illness, social workers, persons who struggle with mental illness and their families and anyone else interested in learning more about the significance of one’s faith and the faith community in dealing with mental illness. Please email for more information.

Stray Boxes

Any of us who forgot to return some of our Project 5000 boxes have another chance! We’re missing some boxes, and, as you may not know, these are “community” boxes, circulated from congregation to congregation for use in Project 5000. Please look in your closets and car trunks and return any empty P5000 boxes to the church office or to the Outreach Ministry Table in the dining room. We’ll pass them along to other congregations for use during Lent.

Prison Chapel Construction Donations

The Hillsborough Prison Chapel is well on the way to completion. A variety of expected donations of building materials and skilled labor have not materialized-the economic timing was unfortunate. So we find ourselves off budget by about 10% or $25,000-30,000 and are returning to those who have invested the 90% to date for help to complete this construction. Various indoor niceties have been put off, but basic items like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical needs remain. Please make your donations to the Chapel of the Cross with Prison Peace Center designated, or mail directly to Alamance-Orange Prison Ministry, P.O. Box 804, Graham, NC 27253. For more information, contact Terry Johnston.

Join the UNC Bone Marrow Registry

In a continued effort to be THE leading public University in every area, Carolina has organized its first ever campus-wide bone marrow registry! Please take 15 minutes of your day on Tuesday, Feb. 23 and go to the faculty lounge at the Morehead Planetarium from 11:00 am - 4:00pm and join the Be the Match registry. Our goal for that day is to register 1,000 new people. Details can be found in the press release.

For Guidance

Direct us, O Lord, in all our doings with thy most gracious favor, and further us with thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in thee, we may glorify thy holy Name, and finally, by thy mercy, obtain everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Book of Common Prayer, p.832
