Improving Communication with Better Listening Skills with Will Dudenhausen of the Dispute Settlement Center (campus center)

Adult Education Next Week

Jesus as Prophet with David Jamieson-Drake (chapel)
Improving Communication with Better Listening Skills with Will Dudenhausen of the Dispute Settlement Center (campus center)

Today

Jesus as Prophet

In this second of a 4-part series, David Jamieson-Drake will explore how the Hebrew Scripture prophetic tradition can be applied to the life, words, and signs of Jesus and yet add up to so much more. Prophetic acts that both signify the prophet’s authority from God and form part of their message will be this morning’s topic.

Parent Gathering

In the first of a two-part program, Will Dudenhausen of the Dispute Settlement Center will offer tools for better listening and communication at home, at work and at school. On March 14, he will return to discuss assertion skills. These valuable skills can then be shared with families. Please join us in the campus center (note change in location) this morning and next Sunday at 10:20.

Outreach Ministry Committee Meeting

The Outreach Committee will meet today at 1:00 pm in the library. All interested parishioners are invited to attend. Please contact Barbara Tremblay if you plan to attend.

Episcopal Youth Community

There will be no EYC meeting today. We will meet again next week at our normal time (sixth through eighth graders will meet from 5:00 - 7:00 pm and ninth through twelfth graders from 6:30 - 8:30 pm). Please contact Caren Parker with questions or concerns.

Sung Compline

Compline is sung in the church every Sunday evening at 9:30 pm throughout the university semester. All are welcome to this singular opportunity to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” If you would like to sing in the choir or assist in some other way, please contact Dr. Quinn at 929-2193.

This Week

Parish Visitors

Parish Visitors will meet at 2:30 pm tomorrow in the library. All parishioners are welcome to attend and learn more about this important and rewarding ministry to our homebound members. For more information, contact Bob Comey.

Adult Inquirers’ Class

There will be no Adult Inquirers’ Class this Monday due to UNC’s spring break. Any wishing to know more about the Episcopal Church are invited to a series of Monday night classes from 7:30 to 9:00 in the parlor. Kristine Dahlberg will lead next Monday’s discussion of stewardship.

Episcopal Campus Ministry

Episcopal Campus Ministry meets in the campus center at 5:30 pm most Tuesdays during the academic term for fellowship, music and a hot dinner. Please come and join us for a wonderful time of fellowship and dinner. All undergraduate students are welcome!

Lenten Supper and Discussion

Please join us this Thursday evening (5:30-7:30) as we continue our discussion of the PBS “Justice” series. Last week, we discussed the philosophical arguments of John Locke and Immanuel Kant. This week, we will talk about John Rawls’s “veil of ignorance” and whether Modern Liberalism stands up in a Gospel-centered community. No previous study of philosophy is needed, nor is pre-registration. A simple buffet supper (bread, soup and fruit) will be served at 5:30. At 6:00, we will watch a short video of a Harvard ethics class taught by Michael Sandel (www.justiceharvard.org). A discussion guided by clergy, staff and parishioners will follow. This week, the Rev. Susannah Smith and Ian Dunn will moderate the conversation.

Lenten Quiet Day

The Spiritual Life Committee invites you to a Lenten Quiet Day to be held in the parish hall of St. Matthew’s Church in Hillsborough on Saturday, March 13 from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. The retreat will be led by the Reverend Dr. Jo Bailey Wells in a series of mediations interspersed with periods of quiet for individual prayer and reflection. Rev. Wells is a Church of England priest who currently teaches at the Duke Divinity School. She has also worked in Anglican settings in Uganda, South Africa and Haiti. The theme of the retreat will be about exploring ways to love God with all our heart, soul and strength- not least when circumstances are challenging. Lunch will be provided and the day will end with a celebration of the Eucharist. Donation for lunch will be $10. There is a sign-up sheet on the church office door. For more information, go to the church’s web site at: www.thechapelofthecross.org

Daylight Saving Begins

Please be sure to set all your clocks ahead one hour at bedtime this Saturday, March 13. Daylight saving begins earlier this year and all services and meetings on Sunday, March 14 will take place at the new daylight-saving time.

Parish Notes

Awakening Heart

Awakening Heart, our parish contemplative prayer support group, will not meet this month in deference to the scheduling of the Lenten Quiet Day on the same day. We want to give our members, both regular and occasional, an opportunity to attend this offering by the Spiritual Life committee. If you are developing or sustaining a practice of contemplative prayer or meditation please keep Awakening Heart in mind as a group that can support you in your practice. We meet in Room 1 from 9:00 am - 10:30 am on the second Saturday of each month, and our next regular meeting will be in Eastertide on April 10. In the past, we have also met on Holy Saturday about 9:30 am, following the Liturgy of the Word. If you are interested in such a meeting this year, or have any other questions concerning Awakening Heart, please contact Jane Dyer.

Flower Deliverers Needed!

Help is needed in delivering small flower arrangements. Delivery time is usually one to two hours on one Monday per month after 11:00 am. If you would like to be a part of this tradition, please contact Mary Guckes.

Quiet Days Away

Consider spending a day or two in prayer and reflection during the week of March 14-19. A lake-front home on Lake Gaston (70 miles from the Chapel of the Cross) will provide the space (6 bedrooms); simple meals will be prepared and the daily offices will be facilitated by Gretchen Jordan. $25.00 per night. There is still room available for participants on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Brochures with additional information are available in the dining room. Sign up is posted on the Christian Formation office door.

Devotional Resource and Offering Boxes

Pick up a Lenten offering box and a devotional resource in the dining room to use during the season. The special Lenten offering will purchase food for the children and young adults at the El Hogar Ministries in Honduras. Due to recent turmoil in Honduras, food is the greatest need. As little as $15.00 will purchase as much as 250 oranges or bananas! Your donations do qualify towards the MDGs asking of 0.7% of your net income! There is an assortment of devotional resources for all ages displayed on the credenza in the dining room.

Easter Flower Remembrances

The March issue Cross Roads has the form for flower remembrances, but there are also some forms in the office. The due date is March 29, to give time for the names to be put into the Easter bulletin.

Vestry Elections

On Sunday, March 21, vestry elections will be held at all scheduled services up to and including the 5:15 service. There are now six nominees: Chrys Bullard, Alice Cotten, Nancy McGuffin, Pat Meacham, Dick Taylor, and Joel Wagoner. Adult confirmed communicants in good standing may vote for four or fewer nominees. A person must be elected by a majority of the ballots cast and be one of the top four vote-getters to become a Vestry member. A run-off election, if necessary, would be held the next Sunday.

CROP Hunger Walk -You Can Help Reduce Hunger!

Sunday, March 21, marks the 24th Annual Chapel Hill/Carrboro CROP Hunger Walk. Our parish is a sponsor and encourages our faith community to support this important effort aimed at raising money in order to provide food and other resources for people locally and around the world. Stop by the Outreach Ministry Table to find out how you can play an important role either by walking or supporting a walker. Brochures, donations envelopes, and tee-shirts for sale are available at the table. For more information contact Barbara Tremblay (484-4088) or Caroline Williams (960- 6775) or go on-line at www.cropwalkonlline.org.

Stewardship Opportunities

Calling All Volunteers for the 2010 ABC Sale!

The ABC Sale is just two months away (Saturday, April 17) and we still have important department co-chair positions that MUST be filled! We are currently seeking a co-chair for the following departments: Sorting, Treasures, Cook’s Corner and Large Item Pickup. This is a wonderful opportunity to share your time and talents with The Chapel of the Cross AND enjoy all of the benefits of fun and fellowship during sale week. Please visit us in the dining room after the 9am and 11:15am services for more information. If your time is tight during sale week but you’re looking for other ways to give, consider making a financial donation to help us cover the cost of volunteer snacks during the week; bake something for our bake sale; or simply set aside your best donations to bring in during sale week. If you have questions, please contact sale co-chairs Christina Balderson or Perri Kersh. You can also find out more about the sale at thechapelofthecross.org by clicking on the ABC Sale link. We look forward to hearing from you!

Now is the Time!

Did you know that all proceeds made from the ABC sales are returned to the community? Last year $27,000 was distributed to 21 local organizations. This year we’d like to do even better. But in order to know who needs the money, we need your help. Please encourage your favorite community organization to apply for an ABC grant. To do this, direct their executive director or grant writer to The Chapel of the Cross website. To read guidelines and find an application form, go to thechapelofthecross.org. Pull down Outreach and click on Outreach Funding Requests. Then click on ABC Sale Funds and Disbursement. Appllications will be accepted until March 31. Direct questions to Terry Johnston.

IFC Special Orientation Session

The Inter-Faith Council for Social Service is holding a special one hour orientation session for its congregational liaisons, volunteers and others who are interested. The purpose of the meeting is to bring everyone up to date on IFC plans and facts associated with its building projects. The date is Thursday, March 18, at 6:00 pm at the Church of the Holy Family, 200 Hayes Road, Chapel Hill. The IFC needs to know how many to expect at this meeting. If you can attend, please notify Alice Cotten (Chapel of the Cross liaison with the IFC).

Have Fun & Help Eliminate World Hunger

Join us in working together to end world hunger by participating in the 4th annual million meals project scheduled for April 3 at the American Legion Hut, 1714 Legion Rd, Chapel Hill. As in the past, Stop Hunger Now (SHN) will be overseeing the food packing process. The global need continues to be immense leading to 16,000 children dying daily from hunger-related causes, which equates to one child dying very 5 seconds. Continual television coverage of the crisis in Haiti makes us painfully aware of the need so close to our own borders. In the last 4 years, SHN has sent over 6 million meals and $4 million of in-kind aid to Haiti. In fact, 1.5 million meals were shipped to Haiti 2 months ago. There will be two shifts on April 3: 9:30 am -11:30 am and 12:00 to 2:30 pm. We anticipate packing more than 75,000 meals on that day so many volunteers are needed (recruit a team, invite friends, scout troops, all are welcomed and there are jobs for everyone). A sign-up sheet is available at the Outreach Ministry Committee table for your convenience. Financial contributions are also welcomed. For additional information, please contact Jenny Mabie.

For Quiet Confidence

O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Book of Common Prayer, p.832
