Today
Developing a Ministry to the Mentally Ill and Their Families
This morning at 10:20 in the chapel, adult education will offer the second of a three-part series on “Ministering to the Mentally Ill and their Families.” Last Sunday, church members shared their own experiences as individuals challenged by depression and alcohol. This week, parishioners will talk about their experiences as the family members of loved ones affected by mental illness and substance abuse. Maintaining a respectful confidentiality will be important and much appreciated during these gatherings. The first two sessions will address depression, substance abuse and schizophrenia. The third session (on April 25) will focus on how we as people of faith and as a faith community can be more sensitive and intentional in our efforts to acknowledge and support those dealing with mental illness. Betsy Champion and Pat Moore have been instrumental in the development of this series and will be facilitating the sessions. Other members of the planning committee include Barbara Tremblay, Kathleen Keating, Chick White, Robin Wallace, Nancy Tunnessen, Vicky Jamieson-Drake and Gretchen Jordan.
Supporting Young LGBT People and Their Families
Doug Hamill, M.D., a practicing pediatrician, was also a Franciscan friar for fifteen years. Much of his current research involves the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender patients and their families. Dr. Hamill lives and works in Portland, Oregon but is in Chapel Hill for a conference at Duke. He will lead a parent gathering (for any interested parishioners) this morning in the Campus Center (10:20 a.m.) to discuss the ways we can support – both spiritually and practically - LGBT young people, their families and their friends.
Episcopal Youth Community
EYC will be a combined Jr. and Sr. High event tonight from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the basement. The program will be “Spirituality and Sexuality, Part II”, a follow-up to Part I this past fall. Doug Hamill will be our special guest. Doug is a former Franciscan friar of 15 years, a pediatrician, a medical school professor, and a speaker on human sexuality, particularly LGBT issues and concerns. He will be leading an informal discussion on the integration of sexuality into a full life of faith in the Christian Tradition. Optional activities will be available for Jr. High students who would rather defer this conversation to a later time. Please contact David Frazelle or Caren Parker for more information.
Sung Compline
Compline is sung in the church every Sunday evening at 9:30 pm throughout the university semester. All are welcome to this singular opportunity to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” If you would like to sing in the choir or assist in some other way, please contact Dr. Quinn, 929-2193.
This Week
Episcopal Campus Ministry
The Episcopal Campus Ministry meets every Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:00pm in the campus center. All undergraduate students, new and old, are encouraged to attend. This Tuesday, the Rev. David Frazelle will be returning from sabbatical and speaking to ECM about some “hot topics” that effect the lives of college students every day. Our very own Rev. Tammy Lee will be cooking a delicious home-cooked meal. Take a break from exams and come join us for a time of spiritual growth, fellowship, and fun!
Bach’s Lunch
Noontime recitals on the Kleuker Organ in our church will continue on the next three Wednesdays from 12:15 to 12:45. This Wednesday’s recitalist will be Dr. Wylie Quinn, organist and choirmaster here at the Chapel of the Cross.
Next Week
Spring Book Table
The Spring Book Table will be Sunday, April 25 in the dining room after the 7:30, 9:00 and 11:15 services. To celebrate our youth and adult confirmants, the Book Table will offer discounted Hymnals and personal editions of the Book of Common Prayer. There also will be Mother’s Day and Graduation gifts and a variety of books. Bring your cash or checks; we can’t take credit cards.
Honduran Missionaries
Kim and Mike Miller, founders of The Hope of Jesus Children’s Home (La Esperanza de Jesus) in the rural town of El Venado, Honduras, will preach at the 5:15 service on April 25. The first children are scheduled to arrive at the family-style home later this year. Mike and Kim have established a coffee farm to help provide financial support for the children’s home. The Millers are supported by the Society of Anglican Missionaries and Senders (formerly South American Missionary Society) (SAMS), the Honduran Episcopal Church, as well as other denominations and individuals. Their website is: www.hopeofjesus.org/index.htm
Parish Notes
Thank You for ABC Sale Success
Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s ABC Sale a huge success! The countless hours of work and truckloads of quality goods are what make the sale possible. Thank you to Christina Balderson and Perri Kersh, our co-chairs, to all the volunteers, and the entire Chapel of the Cross family for reaching out and making a difference for so many people.
Wave of Prayer
Our parish has supported the efforts of Sabeel, Jerusalem and Friends of Sabeel, North America over the years and hosted both directors, Rev. Naim Ateek and Rt. Rev. Ed Browning. Sabeel is an ecumenical grassroots liberation theology movement among Palestinian Christians. Inspired by the life and teaching of Jesus Christ, this liberation theology seeks to deepen the faith of Palestinian Christians and to promote unity among them toward social action. Sabeel strives to develop a spirituality based on love, justice, peace, nonviolence, liberation and reconciliation for the different national and faith communities. Each Thursday at noon, Sabeel, Jerusalem holds a communion service. You are invited to become a part of a prayer chain encircling the globe by joining in prayer at noon each Thursday asking for peace with justice in Israel-Palestine.

For the Conservation of Natural Resources (In Honor of Earth Day)
Almighty God, in giving us dominion over things on earth, you made us fellow workers in your creation: Give us wisdom and reverence so to use the resources of nature, that no one may suffer from our abuse of them, and that generations yet to come may continue to praise you for your bounty; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
