Now is the time to complete the Mental Health Initiative Survey and drop it off at the church office. If you were unable to attend the adult education sessions, there is still an opportunity for you to contribute to developing a ministry to the mentally ill and their families by obtaining a Survey from the Outreach Ministries table on Sunday mornings. If you have questions, please contact Pat Moore, (call office for number).
Prayers of the People-Parish Supported Ministries
Have you noticed that each week in the prayers of the people, a parish supported ministry is listed? What are these parish supported ministries? These are community organizations which are supported by your financial contributions to The Chapel of the Cross. One of the roles of the Outreach Ministry Committee is to recommend to the vestry the disbursement of funds based on grants requested of our parish. This also includes money raised by the ABC sale. Another role of the OMC is to educate the parish regarding the needs of community. Beginning in May, you will find in the bulletin a bit of information about the organization currently listed for that week. Watch for the blurb and pray with us!
ABC Sale Success Results
Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s ABC Sale a huge success! A record-breaking $37,404.80 was raised during the six-hour sale. Proceeds will go to the local non-profits and charities who applied for funds earlier this year. Thank you to Christina Balderson and Perri Kersh, our co-chairs, to all the volunteers, and the entire Chapel of the Cross family for reaching out and making a difference for so many people.
Hospitality Manager Change
We would like to extend a big “Thank You” to Claire Ellington for the wonderful job she did as our Hospitality Manager. Claire recently accepted a position as a paralegal with a law firm in Asheville. We will miss her and the special touch that she brought to the position. Pete Dougherty, the head chef at Kildaire’s Pub in Chapel Hill, is the new Hospitality Manager. Peter brings years of culinary expertise to the job and we are looking forward having him on our staff.

Picnic
The end of the year Church School celebration picnic is set for Sunday, May 30 at 6:30 p.m. at The Southern Village park just off 15-501 South. Our youth will lead an intergenerational game of kickball or softball prior to the 6:30 dinner. Folks are encouraged to come early to join in the games and to enjoy fellowship together. No tickets will be sold but we need to know who is coming to insure sufficient chicken. There are posters in 4 places in the church buildings: the main bulletin board outside the parish offices, the door of Christian Formation office, the bulletin board on the preschool hall and the CFM bulletin board in the dining room. We ask for a $2.00 per person donation at the picnic. All families/individuals are asked to bring a large side or several sides to accompany fried chicken (i.e. deviled eggs, salads, desserts). Chicken, beverages and paper goods will be provided. This is also our thank you, appreciation for all teachers in the Church School program and Children’s Chapel leaders.
Stewardship Opportunities
Share the Warmth of the Summer with a Child in Need
Our annual Summer Clothing Drive for Thompson’s Child & Family Focus begins this Sunday, May 2 and runs through Sunday, June 6. Stop by the table in the dining room and pick up a heart (or two!) to help clothe a child this summer. All items are appreciated, but there’s a special need for new pajamas, swimsuits (tank style for girls/trunks for boys), belts, khaki shorts, capris, and polo shirts this year. Bring your selections, unwrapped, to the parish office on or before June 6. Thank you! Thompson Child & Family Focus’s psychiatric residential treatment program provides a variety of therapeutic, educational, recreational, spiritual and healing ministries in a nurturing care facility for some of our state’s most abused & neglected children. For more information, please contact Susan Thomason (call office for number) or Dina Urquhart (call office for number).

NALC Food Drive
The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) annual Food Drive is coming up on Saturday, May 8. The drive, in its 18th year, is the largest one-day food collection in the nation. Food Pantries at Inter-Faith Council (IFC) and Orange Congregations in Mission (OCIM) are beneficiaries of the drive in this area. Simply place bags filled with nonperishable food items such as canned meats and fish, canned soup, juice, pasta, vegetables, cereal and rice next to your mailbox this Saturday, May 8. No glass or outdated items please. Your letter carrier will pick up the bags and bring them to the Post Office and IFC picks up the food there. Both Chapel Hill and Carrboro letter carriers participate in this drive. We especially need volunteers to help that day (between approximately 2:00 and 6:00) by transporting food between sites in their truck or SUV. Please contact Kristin if you are interested in helping out.
Diocesan Prayer for Mission
Most gracious and loving God: Strengthen the hearts of your people in this diocese, that loving you with our whole heart, and loving our neighbors as ourselves, we might in the power of the Spirit, obey the call of Jesus, to go into our world as disciples making disciples and making a difference, through your saving love. Amen.
