Interim Report from the Space Use Study Committee

Terry Eason, Junior Warden

At its February meeting, the vestry received an interim report from the parish's Space Use Study Committee, chaired by Carolyn Goldfinch. Other members of this committee are Betsy Pringle, Rob Sullivan, Ramsey Terhune, Kevin Trapani, Ann Wilson; Terry Eason and Bert Liverance from the vestry; and Barbara Hastings and the Rev. Tammy Lee from the staff. This report was accompanied by an extensive chart of all the present spaces along with a complete listing of all the current uses for each space. The committee generated an extensive and complex set of comments and suggestions based on considerable input and study which can be summed up in the following six points:

1. There continues to be an increasing use of parish facilities which now is exceeding the expectations and capacities of the building expansion completed almost 10 years ago.

2. It is possible to expand the efficiency of use of many of our present spaces by 'upfitting' them for greater multiple uses and some additional improvement in the already well-managed scheduling of use.

3. There is the clear need for additional space for the crowded Campus Ministry meetings, increased staff size, several classrooms of children and adult Christian education classes, and greater choices for other types of parish meetings.

4. Our dining room is woefully undersized and minimally appointed as our largest meeting space for large parish meetings and meals and many funeral receptions.

5. If building expansion becomes a possibility, there must be no reduction in available parking.

6. All programs, meeting spaces and staff offices should remain on the present site to avoid the bifurcation inevitable by having a satellite location off site. The only possible exception might be an intentional residential program, such as the Johnson Intern Program. The vestry will be discussing these matters further at the April meeting and likely subsequent meetings.
