Alternative Gifts Table
Joanna Hiller, Social Ministry Committee Member

An Alternative Gifts Table will be made available by the Social Ministry Committee during Advent on December 1, 8, and 15.

Alternative Gifts are offered to parishioners as possible Christmas gifts for those who have everything, for those who are hard to buy for, and for those who are interested in sharing their blessings with those in need. By contributing to one of the listed charities on behalf of someone else, parishioners provide two gifts for the price of one. The gifts are also tax deductible.

This year we will feature two local organizations, Cornucopia House, Prison Ministry, and the international Episcopal organization, El Hogar.

Cornucopia House Cancer Support Center is a non-profit organization that strives to enhance and improve the quality of life of cancer patients, their families, and their caregivers by addressing the psychological, emotional, social, physical, and spiritual needs of those living with a diagnosis of cancer.

Alamance-Orange Prison Ministry is a non-profit inter-denominational organization that is currently undertaking the project of building a Religious Services Center at the Orange Correctional Center in Hillsborough. The new structure is intended to meet the religious and emotional needs of the inmates better than the current make-shift arrangements. The building will be used for worship services, Bible studies, musical and religious programs, workshops and seminars, volunteer training, weddings, Islamic services, as well as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous meetings.

El Hogar is a home of love and hope in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. It provides a nurturing Christian environment for about 210 abandoned and orphaned boys ages 5 to 12. The boys are then offered vocational training in electrical and agricultural fields with the guarantee of jobs after graduation. Appeals for additional outside funding became necessary due to a severe drought that has threatened the viability of this agriculture-based organization.
