The 17th Annual University/Community Martin Luther King Memorial Banquet will be held Sunday, Jan. 20, at 7:00 p.m., in the Banquet Hall of the Morehead Planetarium.
The banquet is an opportunity to bring together all people of the community to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. of promoting respect and human dignity. The banquet includes entertainment, singing, community awards, and a keynote speech addressing the issues of faith, justice, and equality raised by Dr. King in his ministry. Keynote speaker this year will be the Rev. Yvonne Delk, the first woman and African-American executive of the Community Renewal Society, a faith-based Chicago metropolitan area mission agency.
The banquet is sponsored by the University/Community MLK Planning Corporation, a non-profit tax-exempt organization that awards college scholarships to students from Chapel Hill/Carrboro and Orange County. The scholarship is open to all high school seniors, without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin or handicap, whose public and private community activities demonstrate a commitment to improving the quality of our community. Emphasis is placed on students who have financial need. Last year, 10 scholarships were awarded to local high school students.
The MLK banquet is normally sold out well in advance. Tickets are $25 and may be obtained from Ted Vaden. Please contact Ted also if you'd like to contribute to the scholarship fund.
