Susie Holloway, President of the Preschool Board of Directors
The Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross celebrated its 30th anniversary this spring and has donated a new garden bench to the church as a way to say thank you for supporting us for 30 years!
The Preschool was established by this parish's Kim Sullivan and Kristy Lee, the wife of the then Rector Peter Lee, in 1971. Initially, only 12 children from nine parish families attended one day a week. By 1972, the Preschool had expanded to a weekly, tuition-supported preschool serving children up to three years of age. The Preschool now serves 37 children each day, with a total enrollment of 60 children who attend either two, three, or five mornings per week. Currently almost half of our Preschool families are also parishioners. The Preschool sponsors two full scholarships for children attending two mornings per week and three partial scholarships for children attending up to five mornings per week.
The Preschool is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is an independent, non-profit corporation that provides quality care for toddlers and preschoolers on a part-time basis. The Preschool is operated as part of the outreach mission of the Chapel of the Cross.
It strives to:
1) provide age-appropriate education for young children to guide them toward a positive self-image and to promote acceptable social and emotional behavior;
2) support working parents by caring for their children outside the home; and
3) provide services to children of low-income and minority families.
At the Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross we believe that each child is a unique and special individual. We recognize that children develop at different rates and have needs and interests that vary from day to day. We value each child's cultural heritage and respect the differences among us. Most importantly, we believe in allowing children their childhood, a time of great curiosity and exploration, by providing a caring, safe, and stimulating environment for them.
The Preschool built and maintains the playground for the use of all the children of the parish. Please stop by and visit the preschool any morning when it's in session. We would love to see you!
