A grant for $2000 has been awarded to our campus ministry for the 2003 Ashe County mission to be carried out by Episcopal Campus Ministry (ECM) students and parishioners of the Chapel of the Cross. Sam Laurent, ECM student resident at the Chapel of the Cross, authored the proposal and was the force behind getting the award.
Each year the Carolina Center for Public Service makes grants to student organizations at UNC-Chapel Hill to encourage community service and outreach. The Ashe County mission caught the eye of the Center's reviewers because of the number of students involved, its relevance to community needs in North Carolina, and the well-planned ECM mission activity.
The Ashe County mission helps the Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission to address problems of substandard living conditions of Ashe County residents and includes building rehabilitation, the provision of much-needed clothing, and the energy of our ECM students.
