Four Chapel of the Cross parishioners are being honored this spring for their outstanding teaching at the University.
Two have received Tanner Faculty Awards, Gerry Unks in the School of Education and Douglas Kelly in the Department of Statistics. The Tanner Awards are the top prizes for excellence in teaching undergraduates at Carolina.
William C. Lycan in the Department of Philosophy was recognized with one of only four awards given this year for outstanding teaching of post-baccalaureate students. All three awards include a $5,000 stipend.
In addition, Jean DeSaix of the Department of Biology, a former recipient of the Tanner Faculty Award, received two Edward Kidder Graham Awards from the graduating class for her contributions to their education. One is for being an outstanding advisor to a student organization and the other for having made a significant impact on undergraduate studies by contributing to student learning both inside and outside the classroom.
The fundamental purpose of a University is to maintain an academic program of excellence led by inspired and gifted teachers. Our parish is well represented among the faculty complement and, obviously, our members are highly respected. The art and profession of teaching is an important calling. We should rejoice in our colleagues' success and commend them when we see them.
