Johnson Intern Program

Johnson Intern Program
Beverly Kyle, Johnson Intern

So far my time as a Johnson intern has been great; and I could not imagine a better start to the fun, challenging, and busy year that lies ahead. During the first couple of weeks things were a bit hectic, but not overwhelmingly so. While we were unpacking and getting situated we were constantly meeting with the laity and members of the parish in order to get to know them and learn about all of the different programs and outreach ministries at The Chapel of the Cross. During this first week all of the interns shared a general feeling of amazement at how much goes on here and how much this parish is able to accomplish. It took an entire week just to meet everyone!

Now that we are in our fourth week as interns, things are starting to become more routine as we slowly become accustomed to our new jobs and establish a regular schedule. As we are settling in and getting to know each other better, we are faced with slightly greater challenges. At work there are slowly more demands made of me now that I am learning more and becoming better trained, and at home there is the sometimes tricky task of getting everyone free on the same night twice a week for group dinner.

Living in a house of five people has been lots of fun so far. Everyone seems to get along exceptionally well. Actually, I find it quite amazing how well everyone gets along and how much we enjoy each others’ company. (I hope I didn’t just jinx our group with that statement!) I think the main challenge for us in functioning as a group and living together is going to be giving everyone their space and quiet time when they need it. Since our work and class schedules are exactly the same right now, everyone is usually home around the same time as well, and it is hard to find time alone. Having time when everyone is there is wonderful, but it does mean that we need to be a bit more aware and considerate of how other people are doing.

I feel so blessed (which is sort of a Christian word for lucky) to have the opportunity to participate in an internship like this. It provides me with everything I need and desire — Christian friends, a place to stay, and the opportunity to do an internship and learn more about what I am called to be in terms of a career. I see this year and this program as the perfect environment for learning more about God and what it means to be a Christian while making tough decisions about my future career.
