“That it may please thee to visit the
lonely; to strengthen all who suffer in mind, body,
and spirit;
and to comfort with thy presence those who are failing
and infirm”
The Book of Common Prayer, p.151
These familiar words from The Great Litany are
being carried out here in our community as members
of this parish minister to those with HIV/AIDS. Twice
a
month, two ‘teams’ from the parish visit the local AIDS house, prepare
dinner for those living there, and share a simple meal with them. It requires
no great theological training, just a desire to show those living with HIV/AIDS
that we care. What a great way to live out our baptism and to minister to those
in need.
Like many, I used to give little thought to HIV/AIDS. “That only happens
in big cities” I thought, until one day a close friend told me about testing
positive for HIV. I wanted to do something, but I know that one cannot save the
world. It is, however, the small things that make a difference in someone’s
life.
Currently there are only two teams. How wonderful
it would be to have another team- even two more teams!
If you are interested, or feel led to this type of
ministry, do contact me. Together, we the members of this parish, can make
a
difference in the lives of those in our community living with HIV/AIDS.
