Announcements

Registration for Church School

Registration forms are available in the parish office, at the entrance to the Yates Building and on the website. Only children and youth who are new this fall or who have a change from last year on any of the information need to complete a new form. If you are unsure as to whether you were registered last fall, there is a listing of all students on the bulletin board in the dining room. All families are asked to complete a Parent Volunteer Form to indicate your willingness to help with programs.

Church School Teacher Recruitment

We need teachers in many classrooms this fall. Many of last years staff have moved or are taking a respite from teaching. Step up, potential teachers, and offer your gifts and skills to one of our 13 classrooms. We need additional teachers in all classrooms except the Kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade, and High School classes. Refer to the complete listing on the dining room Education bulletin board. Contact Gretchen Jordan if you would consider joining a team of 4 to lead one of the classrooms.

Are You Interested in Serving as a Children's Chapel Youth Saint?

Children in the third grade or older who do not participate in the Junior Choir are eligible to be Youth Saints in Children's Chapel. Youth Saints serve as assistants in the 9:00 Children's service on an assigned, rotating schedule. Their job includes setting up the Chapel, greeting preschoolers, helping young children participate in the service and tidying up. There will be two orientations for those interested. All Youth Saints - even those who have helped in Chapel before - must attend one orientation. The orientations will be held in the parlor on Sunday, August 27, at 10:15 and Sunday, September 17, at 11:15. (Please note the changes in times from those listed in the mailing.) To register for an orientation or ask questions, please contact Boykin Bell at 929-2193, ext. 37 or bbell@thechapelofthecross.org.

Pictorial Directories are Here

Pictorial directories have arrived. If your family's picture was taken for the directory, you may pick up your free copy in the parish office. On August 6, 13, and 20, copies will be available between the 8:00 am and 10:00 am services, before the 5:15 pm service, and at the dinner-on-the-grounds on August 20. During the week, you may pick up your copy in the parish office. If your family was unable to have your picture taken, you may put your name on a waiting list to purchase a copy later if we have extra copies available.

Dinner on the Grounds

Dinner on the grounds is a great opportunity for food and fellowship. Join others after the 10:00 am service on August 20. Bring a dish to share. Drinks will be provided.

Foyer Dinner Groups

Interested in meeting new people? Join a Foyer Dinner group where parishioners get to know other parishioners while sharing a meal. Groups meet about once a month. Dinners are casual, cooking is shared, and participants take turns hosting the meals. The host plans the menu and provides just the main dish. Last year's groups will be reorganized, and a young parents group is planned for those interested in joining it. Sign up sheets can be found in the dining room. Completed forms should be placed in a designated box in the church office. Responses need to be in by September 18. For more information, contact Amelia Carew or Jane Steenstra.

Dinner at the Ronald McDonald House

Chapel of the Cross parishioners will be cooking dinner at the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill on Monday, August 28th. Dinner (for 35-40) is prepared there (we plan the menu and bring the food) and served at 6 pm. We could use 3-4 additional cooks. If you are interested, please contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com

Book Discussion: The Namesake

Do you like to be attuned to issues UNC students are considering? A discussion of The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, the 2006 UNC book selection for incoming students, will be Monday, August 14 at 7:30 pm in the parlor, facilitated by Nancy Tunnessen. Read the book now and be prepared for Chancellor Moeser's talk on September 10, the first Adult Education Sunday Forum, when he will address some of issues of the immigrant experience the book raises.

Soloflight Singles at Kanuga

Soloflight is the Episcopal singles retreat at Kanuga during Labor Day weekend, September 1-4. Soloflight is a singles ministry, not a dating game. It is a weekend retreat with workshops and a Blessing and Liturgy of Singleness. Last year the ages ranged from 23 to 86 with some always single, some divorced, or some widowed. Most of our lives are enhanced by structures, traditions, and rituals which give support; single adults live in a world that is basically without such support, traditions and rituals. Soloflight offers guidelines for the single journey based on the Eucharist celebration, the Liturgy of Healing and Wholeness and Blessing of Singularity. It is centered on the belief that the relationship that will not fail is the relationship through Jesus Christ. For more information contact KCollierM@diolex.org. To register through Kanuga call (call office for number).

Grief Recovery Group

The UNC Hospitals Bereavement Support Services is offering a Community Grief Recovery Group this fall. This group is free of charge, open to anyone grieving a death regardless of faith background, and will focus on sharing and moving toward healing. We will meet at the United Church of Chapel Hill for seven consecutive weeks beginning on Monday, September 11, from 6:30-8:00 and ending on Monday, October 23. For more information or to enroll, please contact Heidi Gessner, UNC Bereavement Coordinator at 966-4021 or hgessner@unch.unc.edu.

Servant Leadership School

You are invited to join the Johnson Interns for classes in Servant Leadership 01. The course will begin on September 15 from 10 am to 3 pm, at the Chapel of the Cross and continue over 8 weeks, meeting approximately every other week from 10 am to 12 pm, ending December 15 from 10 am to 3 pm. The commitment is 20 hours, total, and the cost is a $50 materials fee. Please call or email for more information: sgladin@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 extension 14.

Calling the young, and the young at heart...

Crossties dinners return to the Church social calendar this fall with a kick-off on Saturday, September 16th from 5:30-8pm in the Fellowship Hall. This fall series of dinners aims to bring together younger parishioners and those with children by providing on-site childcare during these events. Children's activities will include playground games, story time, making their own desserts, arts and crafts, and scavenger hunts. Babysitters will be with the children while adults socialize over potluck dinners, with the main dish provided by the Church. Other dates being considered are second Saturdays in October, November, and December. Considering food and childcare issues, please make sure you RSVP to Stacey Richardson at staceyr3@gmail.com. We'd love to have you!

Stewardship Opportunities

The Johnson Interns Arrive

As we make preparations for the new class of Johnson Interns to arrive September 6th, we have a few needs over at the Johnson Intern House: a sofa and loveseat that will fit in with the existing furniture; twin beds in lieu of a double in one of the bedrooms, one or two bright floor lamps (but not halogen because of the fire hazard); help moving any or all of the above-mentioned items of furniture. If anyone has these to donate, please call Susan Gladin at 929-2193 or email her at sgladin@thechapelofthecross.org. Thank you so very much for your support of The Johnson Intern Program.

Helping Hand

Are you, or is someone you know, struggling due to mobility challenges, failing vision or weakness due to illness or injury? A Helping Hand serves individuals 60+ years of age and younger adults who need transportation, meal preparation or help with daily tasks. The nonprofit organization provides services 7 days a week/24 hours a day and operates on a sliding fee scale. To learn more about receiving services or volunteering in the free respite care program, please call A Helping Hand at 969-7111 or visit our website: www.ahelpinghandnc.org.

School Supply Drive

Each year Communities In Schools of Orange County (CISOC) organizes a School Supply Drive. This drive helps needy students in Chapel Hill -Carrboro and Orange County Schools receive school supplies which they otherwise would not be able to afford. Please place your donations in the boxes in the dining room and spread the word about the school supply drive at the Chapel of the Cross. If you would rather donate money for school supplies, you may do so by sending a check to CISOC P.O. Box 9454, Chapel Hill, NC 27515. Write School Supplies in the memo line, and every cent will go to supplies! For more information, contact Stephanie K. Bland.

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity helps hard-working people build homes and hopes for a happy, healthy future. We invite you to help our parish's Habitat partnership by participating in the upcoming golf tournament (1 p.m., September 25 at The Preserve). The sixth annual Play for Pars Tournament is our major source of revenue for the building season of 2006-2007. You can support the effort by registering as a golfer, sponsoring a player (clergy, vestry, and parishioners participate!), or assisting the coordinating committee. Contact Lucinda Thompson at lucinda.nc@gmail.com for details.

Reminder: There are two more Sundays of the summer schedule, August 13 and 20.

On August 27 the Chapel of the Cross goes back to "regular" schedule; Eucharist at 7:30, 9:00, 11:15 am, and 5:15 pm; and Compline at 9:30 pm.

Green Tip from the Environmental Stewardship Committee:

Save energy in the kitchen! Keep lids on pots (covered pots retain heat and help cook food more quickly); choose the right cookware (glass and ceramic conduct and retain heat better than metal) ; use the smallest oven you can e.g. toaster oven (they use less energy - and you'll stay cooler too!)
