Announcements
Reminder: This is the last Sunday of the summer schedule.
Next week the Chapel of the Cross goes back to its "regular" schedule:
Holy Eucharist at 7:30, 9:00, 11:15 am, and 5:15 pm; and Sung Compline at 9:30 pm.
Nation-Wide Church Survey
Today, the Chapel of the Cross is being asked to participate in a nation-wide survey of church demographics, attitudes, and behavior patterns. Attendees at all services are asked to remain after the services to fill out this thoughtful but easy-to respond-to survey. The results will help the Chapel of the Cross to learn more not only about ourselves but also about how we relate to churches, Episcopal and otherwise, across the nation. As a part of her requirements in the Doctor of Ministry program at Virginia Theological Seminary, Barbara Day will analyze the data relative to a comparison of responses from other churches in the United States. The information is intended not so much as an evaluation but as a means to continue to discern God's call to our parish in light of our mission statement. Your participation would be most valued and helpful.
Dinner on the Grounds
Dinner on the grounds is a great opportunity for food and fellowship. Join others after the 10:00 am service today. Bring a dish to share. Drinks will be provided.
Students Invited!
ECM would like to invite all students and their families to join us at the Dinner on the Grounds following the 10 am service today. ECM will be providing food to share. Welcome to UNC!
Episcopal Campus Ministry (ECM)
ECM is the fellowship group for undergraduates. We are a ministry of the Chapel of the Cross and an official UNC-CH student organization. We meet every Tuesday evening, beginning August 22, at 5:30 pm in the Campus Center for a program/worship service and a delicious meal. Undergraduates of any faith or denomination are welcome to join us. For more information: www.unc.edu/ecm.
EYC Mission Trip Presentation Today!
Please join the EYC summer mission trip participants as they share the fruit of their journeys to Savannah and New Orleans. The multi-media presentation with souvenirs will take place in the Chapel following the dinner on the grounds.

Registration for Church School
Registration forms are available in the parish office, at the entrance to the Yates Building, and on the website. Only children and youth who are new this fall or who have a change from last year on any of the information need to complete a new form. If you are unsure whether you were registered last fall, there is a listing of all students on the bulletin board in the dining room. All families are asked to complete a Parent Volunteer Form to indicate your willingness to help with programs.
Adult Education Next Sunday
While All Eyes Were Watching Gaza: Two Jews Return to the West Bank, a presentation in pictures and stories with Tom Stern and Tema Okun, peace advocates based in Durham, is scheduled for next Sunday, August 27 following the 9:00 service. In July 2005, shortly before the Gaza disengagement, Tom and Tema spent three weeks in the West Bank to help rebuild a Palestinian home as part of a work camp sponsored by the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) While the world and U.S. media focused attention on this Gaza withdrawal, Tom and Tema saw a different story. They witnessed firsthand how the rapid expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the building of the Wall deep into Palestinian territory, and the destruction of Palestinian homes are affecting life in the West Bank and prospects for a two-state solution. At the ICAHD camp, they worked side-by-side with Palestinians, Israeli Jews and International volunteers to rebuild a home for a Palestinian family in just three weeks. Convene in the parlor for this report.
A Few Good Folk
We still are in need of a few teachers on our Church School staff. Please refer to the listing and openings on the Children and Family Ministry bulletin board in the dining room. Contact Gretchen Jordan or Boykin Bell if you have questions or would consider filling one of the positions. An orientation for teachers will be held next Sunday in Room 4-5 after the 9:00 service.
Are You Interested in Serving as a Children's Chapel Youth Saint?
Children in the third grade or older who do not participate in the Junior Choir are eligible to be Youth Saints in Children's Chapel. Youth Saints serve as assistants in the 9:00 am children's service on an assigned, rotating schedule. Their job includes setting up the Chapel, greeting preschoolers, helping young children participate in the service, and tidying up. There will be two orientations for those interested. All Youth Saints - even those who have helped in Chapel before - must attend one orientation. The orientations will be held in the parlor on Sunday, August 27, at 10:15 and Sunday, September 17, at 11:15. (Please note the changes in times from those listed in the mailing.) To register for an orientation or ask questions, please contact Boykin Bell at 929-2193, ext. 37 or bbell@thechapelofthecross.org.
Pictorial Directories are Here
Pictorial directories have arrived. If your family's picture was taken for the directory, you may pick up your free copy in the parish office. Copies will be available after the 8:00 am and 10:00 am services and before the 5:15 pm service. During the week, you may pick up your copy in the parish office. If your family was unable to have your picture taken, you may put your name on a waiting list to purchase a copy later if we have extra copies available. When you get your copy of the directory, please review your family's information. If there is an error, call the parish office to report the correct information. We will publish a list of changes for parishioners to insert in their directories. We wish to thank Barbara Schiebe, committee chair, Jerry Cotten, co-chair, and Gail Cloud and Ted Pratt who assisted them. This committee did an outstanding job of publishing our pictorial directory.
Foyer Dinner Groups
Interested in meeting new people? Join a Foyer Dinner group where parishioners get to know other parishioners while sharing a meal. Groups meet about once a month. Dinners are casual, cooking is shared, and participants take turns hosting the meals. The host plans the menu and provides just the main dish. Last year's groups will be reorganized, and a young parents group is planned for those interested in joining it. Sign up sheets can be found in the dining room. Completed forms should be placed in a designated box in the church office. Responses need to be in by September 18. For more information, contact Amelia Carew or Jane Steenstra.
Youth Inquirers Class 2006-2007
Any youth in the 9th grade or higher interested in participating in the Youth Inquirers' Class this year is asked to contact the parish office (929-2193) or talk with David Frazelle or Gretchen Jordan. Information will be sent to youth and their parents in forthcoming weeks about the class and schedule. The Youth Inquirer's Class is a nine month program which meets on Sunday mornings during the Church School time, 10:20-11:05. The first class is September 10. The class is a time for youth to learn more about the Episcopal Church, to discuss confirmation, and to raise questions and share in discussion with peers and leaders. The program includes several day events and a weekend pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. in January.
Mark Your Calendar

Annual Parish BBQ
Sunday, September 10, 2006
The Chapel of the Cross's Annual Parish BBQ is scheduled for September 10 at 6:30 pm. This wonderful celebration of fellowship will follow the 5:15 pm service and will be held on the Parish grounds with a complete meal catered by Gillis's BBQ. A tradition that accompanies the BBQ is a parish food drive. In thanksgiving for our bounty, please bring 3 food items for the IFC Food Pantry. Tickets for the BBQ will be sold after Sunday services starting today and are priced as follows: Adults - $10, Children under 10 - $5, University Students - free. No family will be charged more than $40. PLEASE NOTE: on September 3rd we will tell the caterer how many people to prepare for; therefore, all tickets must be purchased by September 3rd.
Henry VIII, Anglicanism, and Us
The Rev. Dr. Richard Pfaff will teach a four evening class attempting to mull over a) what basis there is for the (generally wrong-headed) claim that Henry VIII "founded the Anglican Church;" b) what ecclesiological reflections arise from a soberer, if brief, consideration of what really did happen; and c) what bearing this may have had on decisions made at General Convention in June. Attendees will have readings to consider for each gathering. The class will meet Mondays September 11, 18, and 25, and October 2 from 8 to 9:30 pm in the Library. Please sign up in the parish office.
Servant Leadership School
You are invited to join the Johnson Interns for classes in Servant Leadership 01. The course will begin on September 15 from 10 am to 3 pm, at the Chapel of the Cross and continue over 8 weeks, meeting approximately every other week from 10 am to 12 pm, ending December 15 from 10 am to 3 pm. The commitment is 20 hours, total, and the cost is a $50 materials fee. Please call or email for more information: sgladin@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193 extension 14.
Calling the young, and the young at heart...
Crossties dinners return to the Church social calendar this fall with a kick-off on Saturday, September 16th, from 5:30-8:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. This fall series of dinners aims to bring together younger parishioners and those with children by providing on-site childcare during these events. Children's activities will include playground games, story time, making their own desserts, arts and crafts, and scavenger hunts. Babysitters will be with the children while adults socialize over potluck dinners, with the main dish provided by the Church. Other dates being considered are second Saturdays in October, November, and December. Considering food and childcare issues, please make sure you RSVP to Stacey Richardson at staceyr3@gmail.com. We'd love to have you!
Church of the Advocate Turns Three Years Old
The Episcopal Church of the Advocate, a mission of the Chapel of the Cross, will celebrate the third anniversary of its launching on September 24. All members of the sponsoring parishes, including Chapel of the Cross, are invited to join the people of the Advocate for a festive liturgy and Holy Eucharist on Sunday, September 24, at 5 pm. Dinner fellowship will follow the liturgy. Come celebrate the founding of this growing community of faith! The Advocate meets each Sunday at 5 pm at the Chapel Hill Kehillah, corner of Mason Farm Road and Purefoy Road in Chapel Hill.
Habitat Golf Tournament
We invite you to help our parish's Habitat partnership by participating in the upcoming golf tournament at 1 pm, on September 25 at The Preserve. The sixth annual Play for Pars Tournament (http://habitat.unc.edu/playforpar/) is our major source of revenue for the building season of 2006-2007. You can support the effort by registering as a golfer, sponsoring a player (clergy members Stephen Elkins-Williams, Vicky Jamieson-Drake, and Tammy Lee will be playing!), or assisting the coordinating committee. Contact Lucinda Thompson at lucinda.nc@gmail.com for details.
Stewardship Opportunity
Burmese Refugees Coming This Week!
Seven sites throughout the United States including the Triangle area have been asked to resettle a total of 1900 Karen Burmese refugees. These refugees, from the Tham Hin Refugee camp in Thailand, have suffered political, ethnic, and religious persecution. The Chapel of the Cross has agreed to participate in this resettlement through Lutheran Family Services. We will receive a young couple as early as August 24, followed later by a family of four. Their apartment must be set up immediately, which will require furnishings as well as trucks for transporting goods. Volunteers will also be needed to assist with the acculturation process. Please consult the boards outside the church side entrance to see how you can participate in this worthy cause. Financial contributions made out to the Chapel of the Cross, (memo-Refugee Resettlement) are most welcomed. Contact Barbara Tremblay at btrem@verizon.net

We will be offering tickets in advance to the event for a mouth watering Barbecue with sides, desserts, and beverages. Tickets will be $8.00 for Adults and $5.00 for children. All proceeds will go towards our International Ministries Programs and Millennium Development Goals! Please join us at St. Matthew's in the Courtyard for an afternoon with an international flavor involving fun, fellowship, education, and the best barbecue in Orange County!
Green Tip from the Environmental Stewardship Committee:
Recycle. Reducing waste in landfills reduces emissions of carbon dioxide and methane (another 'green house gas'). Recycling also uses less energy than manufacturing new materials.
Freecycle. Join the Orange county Yahoo group Freecycle at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freecycleorange/. Folks offer and take stuff they don't want to send to the dump.
