Announcements

Episcopal Campus Ministry

ECM is the fellowship group for undergraduates. We are a ministry of the Chapel of the Cross and an official UNC-CH student organization. We meet every Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm in the Campus Center for a program/worship service and a delicious meal. Undergraduates of any faith or denomination are welcome to join us. For more information: http://www.unc.edu/ecm.

Annual Parish BBQ-Today!

The Chapel of the Cross's Annual Parish BBQ is scheduled for today at 6:30 pm. This celebration of fellowship follows the 5:15 pm service on the Parish grounds with a complete meal catered by Gillis's BBQ and includes live music. A tradition that accompanies the BBQ is a parish food drive. In thanksgiving for our bounty, please bring three food items for the IFC Food Pantry.

Directory of Parish Ministries

The new Directory of Parish Ministries is available in the back of the church and chapel today. The directory is the Chapel of the Cross' resource describing parish ministries for newcomers and parishioners alike. The directory includes a brief description and contact information for you to find a place to engage in the breadth of our ministries.

Registration for Church School

Registration forms are available in the parish office, at the entrance to the Yates Building, and on the website. Only children and youth who are new this fall or who have a change from last year on any of the information need to complete a new form. If you are unsure as to whether you were registered last fall, there is a listing of all students on the bulletin board in the dining room. All families are asked to complete a Parent Volunteer Form to indicate your willingness to help with programs.

Heifer Project Begins

Today we embark on our second Ark goal for Heifer International. Please refer to the insert for information about Heifer International. We also welcome Pat and Don Hinkle, Heifer volunteers. They are presenting the parish with a plaque recognizing our successful ark project last fall. This plaque will be hung with the complete Noah's ark puzzle in our building. We hope to complete a new, bigger puzzle this year to hang with an additional plaque for a successful campaign this year. The $5,000 goal to purchase an ark gets underway today and concludes on November 12. Puzzle pieces are $12.50 each. There are puzzle pieces, donation cards, and envelopes for your donation in the dining room. Help us fill the ark by purchasing several puzzle pieces.

Delegates to the Annual Convention

The Vestry will elect delegates and alternates to the Diocesan Annual Convention (Jan. 26-27 in Greensboro) at its September 21 meeting. Those interested in being a delegate or alternate should contact any Vestry member. Delegates serve three year terms and alternates serve for one year. Current delegates are Robert Wright, Syd Alexander, Vivian Varner, and Paul Carew.

Adult Education Opportunities

1. The Fall, 2006 Sunday Morning Adult Education programming kicks off today, with Chancellor Moeser discussing The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri, this year's UNC book selection for incoming students.

2. Copies of the Fall, 2006 Adult Education Opportunities brochure are located in your September issue of Cross Roads and on the tract rack in the Dining Room. You may want to keep this for reference since this fall several evening series are scheduled, as well as a number of daytime programs. Dr. Pfaff's Monday evening series, in September, is now full. The Mary Harris Bible Study will resume on Wednesday mornings, the Short Story Reading group will begin reading Faith: Stories edited by C. Michael Curtis. All programs, including Sunday morning classes, are also listed on the Adult Education bulletin board in the Dining Room.

3. Are you interested in Adult Education programs at the Chapel of the Cross? Would you like to serve on the Adult Education Committee? We meet once a month, we ask you to serve for two years, and we are open to new ideas and topics for study. Call or email Nancy Tunnessen for more information. ntunnessen@nc.rr.com.

Foyer Dinner Groups

Interested in meeting new people? Join a Foyer Dinner group where parishioners get to know each other parishioners while sharing a meal. Groups meet about once a month. Dinners are casual, cooking is shared, and participants take turns hosting the meals. The host plans the menu and provides just the main dish. Last year's groups will be reorganized, and a young parents group is planned for those interested in joining it. Sign up sheets can be found in the dining room. Completed forms should be placed in a designated box in the church office. Responses need to be in by September 18. For more information, contact Amelia Carew or Jane Steenstra.

A.G.E.S. Program

We are looking for persons who would like to join AGES. This program pairs college students with older persons experienced in a variety of ways, occupational and otherwise. We will meet as a group for fellowship and also singly as pairs. If you would like to join us, please contact either Ashley Towle on campus at atowle@email.unc.edu or Teddy Lovejoy at tlovejoy@bellsouth.net.

The New Bulletin

As you may have seen the past two weeks, we have combined the Crossings and the services into one bulletin. With our new copiers capabilities and rising paper costs for the now special cut legal size paper, (which used to be Crossings) we can reduce the cost and the amount of paper we spend on bulletins in the new format.

Calling the young, and the young at heart...

Crossties dinners return to the Church social calendar this fall with a kick-off on Saturday, September 16th from 5:30-8:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall. This fall series of dinners aims to bring together younger parishioners and those with children by providing on-site childcare during these events. Children's activities will include playground games, story time, making their own desserts, arts and crafts, and scavenger hunts. Babysitters will be with the children while adults socialize over potluck dinners, with the main dish provided by the Church. Other dates being considered are the second Saturdays in October, November, and December. Considering food and childcare issues, please make sure you RSVP to Stacey Richardson at staceyr3@gmail.com. We'd love to have you!

Church of the Advocate Turns Three Years Old

The Episcopal Church of the Advocate, a mission of the Chapel of the Cross, will celebrate the third anniversary of its launching on September 24. All members of the sponsoring parishes, including Chapel of the Cross, are invited to join the people of the Advocate for a festive liturgy and Holy Eucharist on Sunday, September 24, at 5 pm. Dinner fellowship will follow the liturgy. Come celebrate the founding of this growing community of faith! The Advocate meets each Sunday at 5 pm at the Chapel Hill Kehillah, corner of Mason Farm Road and Purefoy Road in Chapel Hill.

Men's Breakfast Group

Please mark your calendars for the next meeting of the Chapel of the Cross Men's Breakfast Group to be held on Wednesday, September 27th at 7:30 am. The group resumes its fall schedule after a two month summer recess. Watch future issues of this "Bulletin" for more information on the speaker.

Habitat Golf Tournament

We invite you to help our parish's Habitat partnership by participating in the upcoming golf tournament (1 pm, September 25 at The Preserve). The sixth annual Play for Pars Tournament (http://habitat.unc.edu/playforpar/) is our major source of revenue for the building season of 2006-2007. You can support the effort by registering as a golfer, sponsoring a player (clergy members Stephen Elkins-Williams, Vicky Jamieson-Drake, and Tammy Lee will be playing!), or assisting the coordinating committee. Contact Lucinda Thompson (lucinda.nc@gmail.com) for details.

Honduras Night!

Join the COTC missioners who went to Honduras in May for a night of learning and fellowship. We'll serve platos tipicos (a traditional Honduran dinner), watch a slide show, learn about the work that is taking place in Honduras, share stories, and continue our parish's involvement in global missions. Tickets are just $2, available after services beginning on September 10th, or by e-mailing Jackie Whitt at whittje@email.unc.edu. When you buy a ticket, you'll also be entered into a raffle for fabulous Honduran prizes. Additional raffle tickets will also be available for $2 each. We're looking forward to sharing our stories with you!

Stewardship

Needs for Refugee Resettlement

Many thanks to all who have responded so quickly to the needs of our new refugees. More people are needed to help with the acculturation process, language development, transportation and steering committee. If you are interested in working directly with our new refugees, please come to a meeting at the COTC Tuesday, September 12, 7 pm, in the parlor. Lutheran Family Services and ESL experts will present ways in which we can be effective helpers. We are expecting four more refugees soon to occupy the apartment with Htoe Beh and Pe Pi. The apartment is just about furnished. We still need two dressers and one adjustable bed frame. Contributions are gladly accepted to help pay rent and utlitlies until they are working full time. Please continue to consult the boards in the dining room for additional information including pictures taken at the airport and needs as they arise, including clothing.

Calling all parents and children!

Our parish has been asked to collect any new or used children's books to help in replacing those lost in a fire at St. Mark's/La Guadalupana, Wilson, NC. A literacy program for Hispanic children is a primary ministry of this small church. Please bring any books, in English, to the collection box in the dining room no later than September 17.

Contact Martha Hart, at m.andl.hart@earthlink.net.

The Environmental Stewardship Committee Green Tip :

Buy and serve shade-grown, organic and fair trade coffee. You will be promoting biodiversity, protecting the climate, and supporting community development.
