12:30 Social Hour
Please come to the 12:30 Social hour after the 11:15 service every Sunday for a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross and light refreshments. This event is managed totally by parishioners so we also welcome new volunteers. A sign-up board is available in the dining room at the social hour.
Episcopal Campus Ministry
ECM is the fellowship group for undergraduates. We are a ministry of the Chapel of the Cross and an official UNC-CH student organization. We meet every Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm in the Campus Center for a program/worship service and a delicious meal. Undergraduates of any faith or denomination are welcome to join us. For more information go to the website at http://www.unc.edu/ecm.
Children's Worship Class
The first session of the 1st and 2nd graders worship class will be October 1 during the 9:00 am service. The class will be held in the Campus Center once a month, October through May. Each session is self contained. Dates of upcoming sessions will be announced from month to month. Contact Gretchen Jordan if you have questions.
Parents and "Big Kids,"
Please note that during the 11:15 service, some preschool and kindergarten children are on the playground while their parents worship. These children are in the care of Joy Gattis and her assistants and have been signed in with Joy by their parents. During the last two Sundays, older children have adjourned to the playground after Church School, often leaving the gate open, rough-housing and at times, overwhelming the child care team. Parents, please be responsible for your children after Church School if they are not signed in with Joy. Big Kids, please follow the safety rules on the playground at all times. Thank you.
Parent Program
Please join the Reverend Susannah Smith in the Campus Center during today's Church School hour to discuss "Being a Parent in a Pressure-Cooker World." Parents are often told to give their children "wings so they can fly." How do we do that in an anxious society? Susannah Smith, an Episcopal priest and a Chapel of the Cross parishioner, will explore how a parent's inner guidance system (that true self created by God) has the capacity to make parenting more enjoyable and, at the same time, promote a child's process of maturing.
Thank you!
Thank you to all who donated children's books recently! Six boxes of books for the Hispanic children's literacy program at St. Mark's/La Guadalupana, Wilson, NC, were sent to assist in replacing those destroyed in a fire last month.
Books for all ages were contributed toward this effort which is a primary ministry for this small parish.
Directory of Parish Ministries
The new Directory of Parish Ministries is available in the back of the church and chapel today. The directory is the Chapel of the Cross's resource describing parish ministries for newcomers and parishioners alike.
Episcopal Youth Community
SPLASH! WATER GAMES tonight! Come ready to get wet and messy! We had a great turn out for KICK OFF last week! Come join the fun! EYC meets most Sundays from 5:30 - 7:30 in the dining room. We invite and encourage all sixth through twelfth graders to participate. Contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org for more information.
Heifer Project Begins
The $5,000 goal to purchase an ark is underway and concludes on November 12. Puzzle pieces are $12.50 each. There are puzzle pieces, donation cards, and envelopes for your donation in the dining room. Help us fill the ark by purchasing several puzzle pieces.
The Mary Harris Bible Class
The Mary Harris Bible Class is a self-led Bible study class which meets every Tuesday morning from 8:30 to 9:30 in the parish library. The class has been reading through the entire Bible and is now studying 2 Timothy. All are welcome to join in this endeavor. For further information, please call Mary Schoenfeld.
Enneagram Workshop
We invite you to join us for an Enneagram Workshop on the afternoon of September 29th here at the church from 1-5pm. The Enneagram is a tool used by Servant Leadership to understand ourselves and others better. The workshop will be led by Kathleen Hannan, and we ask for a donation of $20.
Church Office Volunteers
The church office needs volunteers to help with answering phones and light administrative duties around the church. All those with time during office hours 9-5 M-F, can call Mary Anne Handy at 929-2193 to learn more about this key stewardship opportunity.
A.G.E.S. Program
This program pairs college students with older persons experienced in a variety of ways, occupational and otherwise. We will meet as a group for fellowship and also singly as pairs. Please contact either Ashley Towle on campus at atowle@email.unc.edu or Teddy Lovejoy at tlovejoy@bellsouth.net.
New Bulletin Format Introduced
For several weeks, we have been using a newly designed bulletin and weekly announcements for each service. This format change is required by our inability to purchase paper in appropriate sizes at a reasonable price. The 8.5" x 14" paper we previously used for Crossings is now a special cut with much of the larger piece of paper wasted, but for which we paid. While this new format may appear to be more pages and, thus more cost, it actually will cost about the same as previous versions due to better paper costs. We also can produce this finished product with less direct staff time for printing due to features on our new printing equipment. This frees our publications assistant to do more creative design for other publications. We hope you find this bulletin format useful. We welcome your comments.

Additional raffle tickets will also be available for $2 each. We're looking forward to sharing our stories!

Help Launch the Micah Group
The Chapel of the Cross has a strong history of service in our own backyard and far corners of the globe. But our church vision calls on us not only to "care for those in need," but also to "strive for justice and peace among all people." In an effort to live out this dimension of the vision, a small group of parishioners has formed the Micah Group (from Micah 6:8). Join us at our first meeting on Sunday, October 8, 1 to 3 p.m. in the Library, to learn how our congregation can be part of a global movement to alleviate poverty. A light lunch will be served. RSVP to Patricia Watts Hill, pawatts@earthlink.net.

We have great needs in the area of acquiring langauge skills and part-time basic jobs such as yard work. We have also discovered we still need standard-size bed sheets and covers. Please sign the boards in the dining room if you can help out in any of these ways. For further information contact Barbara Tremblay by email at btrem@verizon.net or by phone.
