Announcements

Help Launch the Micah Group

The Chapel of the Cross has a strong history of service in our own backyard and far corners of the globe. But our church vision calls on us not only to "care for those in need," but also to "strive for justice and peace among all people." In an effort to live out this dimension of the vision, and explore our role in a global mission, a small group of parishioners has formed the Micah Group (from Micah 6:8). Join us at our first meeting today from 1 to 3 pm in the Library, to learn how our congregation can be part of a global movement to alleviate poverty. A light lunch will be served.

Dobson Dedication I

On Friday, October 13, 8:00 pm, the first of three dedicatory concerts will be held on the new Dobson organ in the chapel. The recital by Dr. Quinn will include works by JS Bach, Johann Gottfried Walther, William Boyce, Francois Couperin, Felix Mendelssohn, and César Franck.

Bach's Lunch

On Tuesday, October 10, 12:15-12:45 on the Klueker organ in the church. The organist will be Thomas Bloom, Watts Street Baptist Church, Durham.

All Saints' Day service

The Rev. Michael Hunn, will be the preacher at the 8:00 pm All Saints' Day service. Michael leaves his position as Episcopal Chaplain at Davidson College and Associate Rector at St. Alban's Church, to become Canon to the Ordinary for Program and Pastoral Ministry for the diocese, that same day, Nov. 1.

12:30 Social Hour

Please come to the 12:30 Social hour after the 11:15 service every Sunday for a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross and light refreshments. This event is managed totally by parishioners so we also welcome new volunteers. A sign-up board is available in the dining room.

Episcopal Campus Ministry

ECM is the fellowship group for undergraduates. We are a ministry of the Chapel of the Cross and an official UNC-CH student organization. We meet every Tuesday at 5:30 pm in the Campus Center for a program, worship service and a delicious meal. Undergraduates of any faith or denomination are welcome to join us. Project 5000

The parish is once again filling boxes with food for the Inter-Faith Council to provide groceries for those in need in Orange Co. Boxes with attached lists of needed food items are available as you leave church. We ask you to take one and return it filled by October 29. If you prefer to buy bulk, please take a list and buy one of the items in bulk packaging. The Social Ministry Committee is looking for volunteers who could help pass out boxes, collect them, or drive them to IFC after the 11:15 service. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Terry Johnston at terry.johnston@ncmail.net or Frank Holt at fholt@bellsouth.net.

Heifer Project

The $5,000 goal to purchase an ark is underway and concludes on November 12. Puzzle pieces are $12.50 each. There are puzzle pieces, donation cards, and envelopes for your donation in the dining room. Help us fill the ark by purchasing several puzzle pieces.

Church Office Volunteers

The church office needs volunteers to help with answering phones and light administrative duties around the church. All those with time during office hours 9-5 M-F, can call Mary Anne Handy at 929-2193 to learn more about this key stewardship opportunity.

Contribution Statements Mailed

Contribution statements for the first nine months (through September 30) of 2006 were mailed on Tuesday, October 3, to all those who made pledges to the Chapel of the Cross for 2006. Please check these statements for accuracy and contact the Parish Accountant, Debby Kulik, in the parish office if you find any discrepancies or have any questions. Note that these statements include all contributions recorded through September 30 but, because contributions are counted and recorded on Monday mornings, may not include contributions received after the last Sunday in September. Such contributions will be recorded in October and reflected on the year end statement. Note also that payments received in 2006 but credited to a prior or future year pledge are not reflected on these statements but will be shown on the year end statements.

Parish Distribution Email List

The parish maintains an e-mail list of those who would like to receive the weekly prayer list from the bulletin, notices of deaths of parishioners, and other time-sensitive parish information. In order to protect the privacy of those receiving messages and their e-mail addresses, all messages are sent as "blind carbon copies." If you would like to receive this information, please send your email address to Communications Coordinator, Vivian Harris Varner, at vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org.

Parents List Serve

If you are a parent of a child at the chapel of the cross and wish to be added to a parent list serve, notifying parents by email of parish happenings for children, send an email to gjordan@ thechapelofthecross.org and include the email address you wish to be added to the list serve. We try to limit these notices to no more than one email per week, and some weeks there will be none. Reminders such as the upcoming parenting class on prayer or how to talk to teens about AIDS, the intergenerational event on November 12 on hunger, costuming for the November 5 All Saints' processional and requests for children's items for our refugee family are examples of things we send out to parents signed up on the email list.

Mary Esser Memorial

The Episcopal Church of the Advocate will dedicate a silk tapestry commissioned in memory of Mary Esser at its Sunday liturgy at 5:00 pm on October 22. Mary Esser, a longtime member of the Chapel of the Cross, was a founding member of the Church of the Advocate, a mission launched in 2003 by the three established Episcopal Churches in Orange County -- the Chapel of the Cross, Church of the Holy Family, and St. Matthew's Church. The 6' x 9' tapestry, created by local artist Nancy Whittington, is called "The Flame and the Seed," and it captures the spirit of Mary Esser, of the Church of the Advocate, and of the Advocate (Holy Spirit) for whom the mission church is named. The tapestry was commissioned with funds given in memory of Mary Esser after her death in October of 2005. At the October 22 liturgy, the Church of the Advocate will also dedicate a prie dieu that is being given to the mission in memory of Mary Esser by members of her book group, many of whom were members of the Chapel of the Cross.

A Personal Note

Dear Friends,

Many of you have asked how my mother, Ruth, is doing. She continues to hold on but deals with near constant pain from the disease, Multiple Myeloma. (MM is a cancer of the plasma cells, which destroys the bones and inhibits the production of healthy blood cells.) She and my step-father are now living with my sister and brother-in-law in Ohio, which puts them closer to extended family and friends. Mom appreciates your prayers very much and has asked me to convey her gratitude to you all. I also am very appreciative of your concern and kindness toward me. You are a very caring congregation. Thank you very much from my mother and from all our family.

Yours in Christ, Vicky Jamieson-Drake
