Parish Distribution Email List

The parish maintains an e-mail list of those who would like to receive the weekly prayer list from the bulletin, notices of deaths of parishioners, and other time-sensitive parish information. In order to protect the privacy of those receiving messages and their e-mail addresses, all messages are sent as "blind carbon copies." If you would like to receive this information, please send your email address to Communications Coordinator, Vivian Harris Varner, at vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org.

Parents List Serve

If you are a parent of a child at the Chapel of the Cross and wish to be added to a parent list serve, notifying parents by email of parish happenings for children, send an email to gjordan@thechapelofthecross.org and include the email address you wish to be added to the list serve. We try to limit these notices to no more than one email per week, and some weeks there will be none. Reminders such as the upcoming parenting class on prayer or how to talk to teens about AIDS, the intergenerational event on November 12 on hunger, costuming for the November 5 All Saints' processional and requests for children's items for our refugee family are examples of things we send out to parents signed up on the email list.

Mary

Mary: The Imagination of Her Heart by The Rev. Penelope Duckworth is the book we will be using to guide a study on Monday evenings, November 6, 13, and 20 from 7:30 - 9:00 in the Parlor, facilitated by the Rev. Martha Hart. This book invites readers to look at Mary in various ways and touches on the differences between Anglican and Roman Catholic understandings of Mary. You may purchase your own book or sign up for a copy in the parish office before November 1.

Mary Esser Memorial

The Episcopal Church of the Advocate will dedicate a silk tapestry commissioned in memory of Mary Esser at its Sunday liturgy at 5:00 pm on October 22. Mary Esser, a longtime member of the Chapel of the Cross, was a founding member of the Church of the Advocate, a mission launched in 2003 by the three established Episcopal Churches in Orange County -- the Chapel of the Cross, Church of the Holy Family, and St. Matthew's Church. The 6' x 9' tapestry, created by local artist Nancy Whittington, is called "The Flame and the Seed," and it captures the spirit of Mary Esser, of the Church of the Advocate, and of the Advocate (Holy Spirit) for whom the mission church is named. The tapestry was commissioned with funds given in memory of Mary Esser after her death in October of 2005. At the October 22 liturgy, the Church of the Advocate will also dedicate a prie dieu that is being given to the mission in memory of Mary Esser by members of her book group, many of whom were members of the Chapel of the Cross.

The Men's Breakfast Group

The Men's Breakfast Group will meet at 7:30 am on Wednesday, October 25 in the Parish Dining Room. The speaker will be the Rev. Thomas Nixon, pastor of St. Paul AME Church, our Sister Parish. We have asked him to relate his views on the March 2006 pastoral letter from the House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church entitled, "The Sin of Racism: A Call to Covenant." Newcomers are always welcome. For further information call Vince Collura.

Stewardship

Refugee Resettlement Update

Many thanks to those parishioners who responded so quickly and generously providing clothes and toys for the children. They are now bountifully supplied. We recently discovered that we will be resettling seven, rather than six, as Say Ther and Tha Gay are expecting their third child in December! We are also expecially grateful to the six UNC students who are giving so generously of their time to tutor the families in English. Pea Ehso, the five-year-old, began kindergarten this past week at Frank Porter Graham. We still need more people to help with transportation and shopping. Please contact Barbara Tremblay, btrem@verizon.net if you can help.

Culbreth Academic Coaches

Culbreth Middle School is recruiting adult volunteers to coach individual 6th grade students on organization, study skills, time management, and other related academic areas. This is not tutoring. Meetings with the students are one hour a week at Culbreth Middle School from approximately 2:30 through 4:00 Monday through Friday. Training will be provided. For more information please call Aileen Sutter.
