Social Ministry Steering
The Social Ministry Committee is urgently seeking parishioners who would be willing to participate on the Steering Committee for Refugee Resettlement (Burmese). The committee will function as a team responding to the needs of our Burmese families. There are others beside the Steering Committee participating in the project, but we need more people to coordinate the program and interface with the refugees to make major decisions regarding their care. This provides a rewarding opportunity to participate in the outreach of the parish and serves a crucial need as we work to resettle our new families. This does not mean lots of meetings, and it is time limited. To sign up or find out more, contact Peggy Pratt at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org or Barbara Tremblay at btrem@verizon.net.
12:30 Social Hour
Please come to the 12:30 Social hour after the 11:15 service every Sunday for a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross and light refreshments. This event is managed totally by parishioners so we also welcome new volunteers. A sign-up board is available in the dining room.
Episcopal Campus Ministry
On Tuesday, October 24, the Rev. Tammy Lee will lead a "Chaplin's Chat" regarding discernment and spiritual growth. ECM is the fellowship group for undergraduates. We are a ministry of the Chapel of the Cross and an official UNC-CH student organization. We meet every Tuesday at 5:30 pm in the Campus Center for a program, worship service and a delicious meal. Undergraduates of any faith or denomination are welcome to join us. For more information go to http://www.unc.edu/ecm.
AIDS House
ECM has traditionally utilized AIDS House as a ministry and outreach mission. On Friday, October 28th, ECM will be cooking for those currently residing in the AIDS House located in Carrboro. If you prefer to buy bulk, please take a list and buy one of the items in bulk packaging. Cash contributions in lieu of filling boxes are also welcome. The Social Ministry Committee is looking for volunteers who could help pass out boxes, collect them, or drive them to IFC after the 11:15 service. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Terry Johnston at terry.johnston@ncmail.net or Frank Holt at fholt@bellsouth.net .

Mary Esser Memorial
The Episcopal Church of the Advocate will dedicate a silk tapestry commissioned in memory of Mary Esser at today's liturgy at 5:00 pm. Mary Esser, a longtime member of the Chapel of the Cross, was a founding member of the Church of the Advocate, a mission launched in 2003 by the three established Episcopal Churches in Orange County -- the Chapel of the Cross, Church of the Holy Family, and St. Matthew's Church. The 6' x 9' tapestry, created by local artist Nancy Whittington, is called "The Flame and the Seed," and it captures the spirit of Mary Esser, of the Church of the Advocate, and of the Advocate (Holy Spirit) for whom the mission church is named. The tapestry was commissioned with funds given in memory of Mary Esser after her death in October of 2005. At this evening's liturgy, the Church of the Advocate will also dedicate a prie dieu that is being given to the mission in memory of Mary Esser by members of her book group, many of whom were members of the Chapel of the Cross.
The Men's Breakfast Group
The Men's Breakfast Group will meet at 7:30 am on Wednesday, October 25, in the Parish Dining Room. The speaker will be the Rev. Thomas Nixon, pastor of St. Paul AME Church, our Sister Parish. We have asked him to relate his views on the March 2006 pastoral letter from the House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church entitled, "The Sin of Racism: A Call to Covenant." Newcomers are always welcome. For further information call Vince Collura.
Children's Participation
On October 31 from 3:45-5:00, children are invited to come to the dining room in costume to trick 'n treat in neighborhoods around the church. If you cannot join the group but would be willing to collect donations for Unicef, boxes are available outside the education office. On Sunday, November 5, children are encouraged to dress in costume or create a shield representative of a saint's life. Children will gather in the dining room no later than 8:55 to join in the 9:00 service processional. Children will sit in the chancel area for the first half of the service. After the baptisms, chapel children will exit the chancel side door and join others in the Chapel. Older children will return to the pews to sit with their parents.

The annual vigil and rally seeks to close a training program that has for decades trained Latin American military officers who have gone on to torture or kill priests and lay leaders alike over their advocacy for the poor. The coffee house style program features music and dance by Pablo Valencia, the Quartet and the Folklorico dancers... great desserts, and discussion. The suggested donation is $10 or $5 for students.
