Announcements
Annual Giving
How important is my pledge to Chapel of the Cross? My pledge, combined with all other pledges will dictate the 2007 parish budget. And the budget will shape the programs and ministries of the Church. The most recent information provided by the parish office shows that although we have received numerous pledges (thank you!), we still have a way to go to meet our goal. Approximately 270 families who pledged last year have not yet sent in their pledge. Your pledges, whether you have pledged before or not, will provide essential funding for the 2007 budget. Please turn in your pledge card either by mail or make your pledge on line: www.thechapelofthecross.org. Pledge revenue is critical to parish operations and ministries. If you did not receive a pledge packet in the mail, call the church office at 929-2193, and a packet will be sent to you immediately. Please join your fellow parishioners and count your pledge among those that are formally committed to the ministries of this parish. Our In-Gathering Sunday, November 26, is fast approaching.
Bach's Lunch
On Tuesday, November 14, at 12:15 pm, Dr. Rachel Gragson of Monumental United Methodist Church in Portsmouth, VA will finish the Bach's lunch series in the church.
12:30 Social Hour
Please come to the 12:30 social hour after the 11:15 service every Sunday for a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross and light refreshments. This event is managed totally by parishioners so we welcome new volunteers; please sign up in the dining room.
Mission With Honduras 2007
The Global Missions Committee invites all parishioners to join us on our May 2007 Honduras trip in partnership with Iglesia San Patricio, El Progreso. For more information about signing up for Honduras 2007 by going or supporting the mission group, see the December/January Cross Roads or email Ann Henley at annhenley@msn.com.
Episcopal Campus Ministry
ECM is the fellowship group for undergraduates. A ministry of the Chapel of the Cross and an official UNC-CH student organization, we meet every Tuesday at 5:30 pm in the campus center for program, worship service and dinner. Undergraduates of any faith or denomination are welcome to join us. For more information go to www.unc.edu/ecm.
Intergenerational Today
Second grade students through adults will participate in an intergenerational event today from 10:20-11:05, sponsored by the social ministry committee. 2 year old through 1st grade classes will meet as usual. Members of the Ad Ed Committee designated by a yellow hat will have tickets for room assignments and will be at all exit/entrance doors of our buildings. There will be 6 groups meeting in various locations in the church. This event will provide activities about hunger with a special emphasis on Goal 1 of 8 of the MDG's (Millennium Development Goals) which calls us to alleviate hunger and extreme poverty by 2015. Help assemble bags of Hearty Bean Soup for our area food pantry, engage in a few games and activities and consider one thing you and your family can do to help meet the goal by 2015.
1st And 2nd Grade Worship
The class will meet next Sunday, Nov. 19 in the Campus Center. The focus will be on the liturgical calendar year. Children are reminded to work on the responses.
Greenery Needed
We need lots of greenery (boxwood, evergreen, holly) for assembling Advent wreaths on the first Sunday of Advent, Dec. 3. So we can insure sufficient supplies, either contact Gretchen Jordan or sign up on the Children and Family Ministry bulletin board in the dining room. We request that you deliver it to the outside door of the dining room on Saturday, Dec. 2.
Medical Equipment Closet
We want to remind all parishioners that the church has a medical equipment loan closet with walkers, wheelchairs and other equipment. If you or someone you know is in need, please call the office. They can handle it or put you in touch with the Good Sams Coordinator.
Furniture Needed
Our Burmese Families need furniture: book and toy shelves for the children to store their toys, a child's play table with two chairs, a dresser or something to hold clothing, a coffee table or anything that could serve as a bedside table or end table. Contact Barbara Tremblay (call office for number) or btrem@verizon.net. In a few months Say Ther and Tha Gay will be having their third child. If you are parting with infant clothes, equipment, furniture etc - please contact Barbara or Peggy Pratt.
Alternative Gifts Project
The Social Ministry Committee is looking for an individual or a team to head up the Alternative Gifts Project this year. This provides a chance for parishioners to make a donation to a worthy organization in someone's name as a way of remembering and honoring them at Christmas time. There are written instructions on how it has been done and folks to advise you. Committee members will volunteer to staff the tables after December services. In the past the project has raised a total of anywhere from $900 to $3000 in contributions. The table would be in the dining room the first three Sundays in December. For more information, call Peggy Pratt (call office for number) or pegpratt@nc.rr.com.
Project 5000
If you still have Project 5000 boxes or bulk packaged food items for the IFC, please return them filled to the church as soon as possible. Thank you. This response has been extremely helpful to the IFC at a critical shortage time.
Advent Prayer Groups
Prayer groups meeting three times each are being offered for the season of Advent. The groups will engage in the lectio divina prayer form. Information about this is in the Nov. Cross Roads with a registration form. You may also find a brochure and registration forms in the dining room tract rack. The deadline for forms is Nov. 25.
Heifer Finale
We complete our official Heifer Project fund drive today on our Intergenerational "Hunger Sunday," having raised $5,387 to surpass our Goal of $5,000.00! If you have not made a donation, please do not let this deter you from doing so. We will receive all donations through today. Last year we surpassed our goal by $1500. You can still make donations and receive "In Honor of" cards for special people as Christmas gifts or other special celebrations. Many thanks to all for helping complete our puzzle and successfully launching our second Gift Ark!
Call For Soups And Casseroles
The Good Samaritan Guild is once again asking parishioners to get out those tried and true recipes and help restock our freezer with nutritious soups and casseroles which are then taken to parishioners in times of need. Please use pans and containers that do not have to be returned. Multiple small portions are much more useful than a large casserole, as food generally goes to a couple or an individual. Please date your contributions and label them with ingredients. It is helpful to mark them for Good Samaritans. They are stored in the freezer in the dishwashing room. If you bring it during the week, the office staff can direct you. Questions? Contact Peggy Pratt (call office for number) or pegpratt@nc.rr.com.
Christmas Wreaths
DECK THE HALLS.... with beautiful, scented, balsam wreaths from the great state of Maine. Wottons' Evergreens has been working with the Chapel of the Cross for the past ten years providing us with this unique mission fund raising opportunity. Buy one for yourself or send one to friends and loved ones for Christmas. Look for us following the services today and next Sunday.
Episcopal Youth Community
This Sunday Seniors will be making Care Packages for EYC friends who are in their first year of college. If you have special treats you would like to add please bring them! Juniors please bring old magazines to cut up and shoeboxes if you have them. Looking forward to seeing you!! EYC meets most Sundays from 5:30 - 7:30 in the dining room. We invite and encourage all sixth through twelfth graders to participate. Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions.
Thou Shall Not Kill
Tomorrow, Nov. 13, at 7 pm in the Chapel, the Social Ministry Committee is hosting a viewing of "The Empty Chair." The film is a documentary that confronts the issue of the death penalty and provides an insight into how families of murder victims handle their loss and instinct for revenge. A discussion will follow that will be facilitated by three panelists. Panelists include Marylyn Elzer, an attorney who has witnessed one of her clients being executed; Brian Elderbroom of the Common Sense Foundation; and Megan Sheridan, our Johnson Intern serving at People of Faith Against the Death Penalty.

Micah Group Meeting
The Micah Group met for the first time in October and together established a mission to support the Church's vision to "strive for justice and peace among all people," specifically through the multi-faith effort to advance the Millennium Development Goals. Our second meeting will take place today after the 11:15 am service to begin to plan our activities in the coming months. Come join us and learn more about our focus on the Millennium Development Goals, and be a part of planning this exciting new group. Contact Patricia Watts Hill with any questions or to RSVP, pawatts@earthlink.net.
Advent Quiet Day
The Rev. Stephen Elkins-Williams will lead the Advent Quiet Day on Saturday, Dec. 2 from 9:30 am until 2:30 pm in the Dining Hall at Camp New Hope. Advent readings will be the scriptural basis for contemplation, with silent times for prayer and reflection, a quiet lunch and a concluding Eucharist. Participants are asked to bring a Bible and a notebook for writing reflections. Camp New Hope is located on Highway 86 north of Chapel Hill. Casual dress is encouraged. Breakfast snacks and a light lunch with vegetarian options will be served ($6 contribution requested). Carpooling will be available. Please stop by or call the parish office at 929-2193 to sign up for the Quiet Day. For more info, contact Jan Seabock (call office for number) at jseabock@mindspring.com or visit www.newhopeccc.org.

Prepare to feast on chili and cornbread, hot apple cider and s'mores straight from the hearth. We will enjoy our time together and then end our evening with Compline. Caroling To Homebound
On Sunday, Dec. 10, parishioners are invited to join others at 2:30 in the dining room for hot chocolate and hot cider and a bit of singing before we depart for area nursing homes and homes to visit parishioners. It helps in planning to have some idea of the number who plan to join us. Please sign up on the listing on the Children and Family Ministry bulletin board in the dining room.
Children's Pageant
Reminding all parents and children 5th grade and down that the annual "no practice" pageant will be on Saturday, December 16 at 2:30 in the church. You may secure a costume the week before or simply arrive early enough to choose and dress before the 2:30 enactment. This is a highlight of the children's programs of the parish. All parishioners are invited to come and relish in the joy and mystery of the Luke 2 story.
Martin Luther King Scholarship Banquet
Tickets to the annual Martin Luther King scholarship Banquet to be held at the Friday Center on Highway 54 on Sunday, January 14, 2007, are now available. The cost is $25.00 per ticket and can be obtained from Barbara Pipkin (call office for number). This popular community event is always a sell-out by December, so please order tickets now.
Stewardship
Fire Wood Drive
Each winter parishioners volunteer to cut and deliver wood for heating fuel to several clients in our area. This group needs people who can donate the use of pickup trucks on certain Saturdays. If you have a truck and can volunteer it for loading and delivery on a Saturday morning, it would be much appreciated. Dates for cutting and delivery will be announced soon. But you can contact David Brown (call office for number) or Tammy Lee (call office for number) now.
IFC Thanksgiving
Holidays are for Sharing - As Thanksgiving approaches, we ask you to remember those less fortunate by purchasing a holiday meal for an IFC family. $20 helps them offer a holiday meal, turkey and all, to an entire family. Coupons are available in the dining room by the fireplace and by the Ministry bulletin board. Send the coupon and your check for $20 to: Inter-Faith Council, 110 W. Main St. Carrboro, NC 27510. You may also send your check to Chapel of the Cross. Be sure to write For IFC Holiday Meals in the memo line.
RSVVP
On Tuesday, Nov. 14, area restaurants will donate 10% of their breakfast, lunch and dinner proceeds to help alleviate hunger in the Triangle. It's simple. You go out to eat. The restaurants make a donation. Everyone gets a meal. Restaurants Sharing V(5) + V(5) Percent (5+5=10%), or RSVVP, has raised more than $425,000 to fight hunger since it began in 1989. RSVVP Benefits Urban Ministries of Durham's Community Kitchen, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, and the Inter-Faith Council for Social Service. For a complete list of participating restaurants, visit www.rsvvp.org or look for the flyers throughout the parish hall.

Paper or plastic at the grocery store? Paper comes from trees. Plastic comes from petroleum. Recycle whichever you use but take your own re-usable cloth bags as often as possible.
