Approaching the Eucharist

Last Sunday's wonderful - but too brief - discussion on "Approaching the Eucharist as Episcopalians" left some parishioners with new or unanswered questions. The Rev. Stephen Elkins-Williams has generously agreed to follow up last week's presentation with a question-and-answer session in the Library at 10:20 am.

Sister Mary Margaret Weber

"Is Your God Too Small?" presented by Sister Mary Margaret Weber, co-director of "A Place for Women to Gather" and "Wellsprings of Wisdom" in Raleigh will convene in the Parlor following the 9:00 service today. Sister Mary Margaret is a Catholic Sister of the Holy Cross and has been for over 40 years. She is a popular speaker and retreat leader throughout the Triangle. She has ministered in schools, parishes and hospitals and has a keen interest in accompanying men and women as they explore their relationship with the holy. Today's session will explore various images of God. She will expand upon today's presentation in three Tuesday evening sessions on Jan., 23, 30 and Feb. 6 from 7:30-9:00. If you plan to attend the evening sessions, you are encouraged to indicate so by signing up on the list in the parish office or on the Ad Ed bulletin board in the dining room so that sufficient class materials can be prepared. Today's session is self contained and does not indicate participation in the evening sessions.

This Week

Episcopal campus Ministry

This Tues., Jan. 16, Episcopal Campus Ministry will return for the spring term. Please join us for a welcoming liturgy and the $3 dinner to reconnect after the break. As always we meet at 5:30 pm in the campus center. Welcome back ECM! See y'all Tuesday!

Next Sunday

Newcomers Classes

Two orientation sessions for newcomers will be held in the parlor, at 10:15 on Sun., Jan. 21 and Jan 28. All those who would like to learn more about the Chapel of the Cross and meet some of the staff and other newcomers are encouraged to participate.

Adult Ed Next Sunday

"God's Mission, the Church's Ministry and Our Calling" Patricia Watts Hill and Nancy Tunnessen will lead. A classic axiom is that mission is God's transforming action in the world. David Bosch, the South African theologian, offers a succinct definition of mission: "Mission is the good news of God's love, incarnate in the witness of a community, for the sake of the word." What do the Scriptures imply about mission? What is included in the "ministry" of a church? What do you understand mission to mean.

Parish Notes

Parish Choir Openings

The Parish Choir is open to new members. All are welcome, but tenors and basses are especially needed. Speak with Dr. Quinn if you are interested in singing with us.

Older high school or college students are welcome!

The Adult Inquirers' Class

The Adult Inquirers' Class, originally scheduled to begin Jan. 8, will meet Monday nights in the parlor from 7:30 to 9:00 beginning Jan. 22. Believers raised in other traditions, new Christians, and Episcopalians looking for a deeper understanding of their faith will find this a stimulating and helpful course. It is required for adults wishing to be confirmed by Bishop Curry on May 6. No pre-registration necessary.

Library Committee

On Sat., Jan. 27 from 9:30-11:30 am, the Library Committee will meet in the Parish Library. All who are interested are invited to attend. For more information, please contact Maggie Keller at by email at mskeller@unc.com (email preferred).

In Mission With South Africa

Visitors from Kwasa Centre in Springs, near Johannesburg, will be our guests February 3-5. You can help to welcome the Rev. Sharron Dennie, three teachers and two students by:

· hosting or being an event-partner

· transporting visitors mid-day on Saturday or Sunday

The Global Mission Committee has designated Kwasa as a place the Chapel of the Cross can do work toward the Millennium Development Goal to "achieve universal primary education." To volunteer call or email Barbara Day at bday1@unc.edu or Martha Dill at m.dill@earthlink.net.

Stewardship

Donate Girl Scout Cookies to Soldiers Stationed Overseas

As part of this year's Girl Scout cookie sales, you can make a tax-deductible donation (in any amount) that will be used to purchase cookies for our servicemen and women who are stationed overseas. Local Girl Scouts will be accepting donations for Operation Cookie Drop through March 1. If you would like to contribute and have not been contacted by a Girl Scout, you can make your Operation Cookie Drop donation through Junior Girl Scout Troop 219. Contact the troop leader, Lorraine McBride, or lbmcbride@aol.com.

21st Crop Walk

The IFC is looking for people interested in coordinating or being on the CROP Walk planning committee. The 21st Annual Chapel Hill/Carrboro CROP Walk is a fun, family-friendly event which will be held on Sun., April 15, and helps to raise money and awareness about local and world hunger. The Chapel of the Cross has played a large part in the Crop Walk over the years. The full planning committee will meet about once a month, Jan.-May, for about 1-1.5 hours. Individual members will mainly make phone calls and send emails to help create a successful event. Many parts of the Chapel Hill walk just fall into place - the same folks have done their parts for so many years that it just happens. We will provide an organizing guide that runs through each aspect of the walk and gives timelines, materials and "How To?" info. If you think you would enjoy being a vital part of this exciting event, please contact Charles Williams, ext. 15 or email at assistant@ifcmail box.org.

Wood Cutting Day

Jan. 20 is wood cutting day at the Chapel of the Cross. Volunteers gather on several weekends each winter to cut and deliver wood for those in our community who need it for heating fuel. The second date of this winter is the morning of Sat., Jan. 20. We need volunteers who can saw, split, and load wood. If you have a pickup truck and wood cutting gear, that's especially helpful. Everyone who's interested in helping can contact David Brown (call office for number) for directions to the site. Look for later announcements about other dates this winter.

Senior High Trip

The Chapel of the Cross is taking a Sr. High trip to New Orleans, LA, this summer. This trip is open to rising 9th-graders through just-graduated seniors. We have 20 places for youth on this trip. The dates of our trip are July 28 through August 5. To secure a place on this trip, the relevant forms and a $50 deposit are due by Feb. 1, (forms located outside David's office door and in the parish office). A $300 payment will be due March 26. The remaining balance of $300 will be due June 13. The cost of our trip to families is $650. This amount helps cover transportation, food, accommodations, work supplies, materials and activities for the week. There are no hidden costs, and we encourage youth to bring only a small amount of spending money for sodas, souvenirs and airport food. Whatever financial aid you need is available. Contact David Frazelle at 929-2193 to request scholarships.

Harris Teeter Suitcase Donations

Thompson Child & Family Focus has an ongoing need for suitcases that are new or in good condition. If you have earned a suitcase as part of the recent Harris Teeter VIC incentive program and do not need it, we hope that you will consider donating it to Thompson. We will be collecting suitcases until mid-February. If you have any questions, contact Lorraine Belden McBride at lbmcbride@aol.com.

Thompson Child & Family Focus

Thank you to everyone who picked up tags and returned clothing and cottage items for the children at Thompson CFF! We made a large delivery of donations that arrived in time for Christmas. You can take advantage of the January sales to donate items for tags that you may have picked up in December. Donations should be returned to church by Sun., Jan. 21. If you have any questions or would like the list of Thompson needs emailed to you, please contact Lorraine Belden McBride at lbmcbride@aol.com or Marsha Pate at map37215@bellsouth.net.
