Newcomers Classes
Two orientation sessions for newcomers will be held in the parlor, at 10:15 today and next week. All those who would like to learn more about the Chapel of the Cross and meet some of the staff and other newcomers are encouraged to participate.
Adult Education Today
"God's Mission, the Church's Ministry and Our Calling" will be led by Patricia Watts Hill and Nancy Tunnessen. A classic axiom is that mission is God's transforming action in the world. David Bosch, the South African theologian, offers a succinct definition of mission: "Mission is the good news of God's love, incarnate in the witness of a community, for the sake of the word." What do the Scriptures imply about mission? What is included in the "ministry" of a church? What do you understand mission to mean?
This Week
Tuesday Evening Program
"Is Your God Too Small," a three session program begins this week, Jan. 23 at 7:30 convening in the Parlor and continues on January 30 and Feb. 6. All are welcome but indicating your intention to participate by signing up on the list on the Ad Ed bulletin board in the dining room will insure sufficient copies of handouts. Sister Mary Margaret Weber, co-director of "A Place for Women to Gather" and "Wellsprings of Wisdom" in Raleigh is our facilitator. Sister Mary Margaret is a Catholic Sister of Holy Cross and is a popular speaker and retreat leader. She has ministered in schools, parishes and hospitals and has a keen interest in accompanying men and women as they explore their relationship with the holy. This program will invite participants to explore various images of God and engage in prayer practices experimenting with new images.
The Adult Inquirers' Class
The Adult Inquirers' Class, originally scheduled to begin Jan. 8, will meet Monday nights in the parlor from 7:30 to 9:00 beginning tomorrow, Jan. 22. Staffed by the Rector and other clergy, this class explores Christianity from an Episcopal perspective. Believers raised in other traditions, new Christians, and Episcopalians looking for a deeper understanding of their faith will find this a stimulating and helpful course. It is required for adults wishing to be confirmed by Bishop Curry on May 6. No pre-registration necessary.
Episcopal campus Ministry
Back from a semester abroad, Matthew Wright will be speaking to ECM about his travels to India, Nepal and Tibet. Following Matthew's speech and the Eucharist, there will be a dinner and time for fellowship. We are always looking forward to seeing new faces and hope that you will be able to join us on Tue., Jan. 23, at 5:30 pm.
Library Committee
On Sat., Jan. 27, from 9:30-11:30 am, the Library Committee will meet in the Parish Library. All who are interested are invited to attend. For more information, please contact Maggie Keller by email at mskeller@unc.com (email preferred).
The Men's Prayer Breakfast
The Men's Prayer Breakfast will meet for the first time in 2007 on Wed., Jan. 24, at 7:30 am in the chapel. The year will begin with the MPB offering intercessory prayer. If you have a prayer request, please forward it to tony@tonyhawkinsre.com. After prayer, there will be breakfast and fellowship in the parish hall. All are invited to pray with us.
Next Sunday
Adult Ed Next Sunday
An Introduction to Celtic Christianity will be presented by Gretchen Jordan in the library. This is offered in preparation for the Lenten Retreat on March 2-3 with J. Philip Newell for those who have not been exposed to the Celtic perspective or who desire a refresher. What is Celtic Christianity? Who were the Celts? What does this tradition have to offer us in the 21st Century? For information about the Lenten retreat, refer to the article under "Mark Your Calendar."
Parish Notes
Parish Choir Openings
The Parish Choir seeks additional singers. If you are interested, call Dr. Quinn or simply come to a rehearsal, Monday nights at 7:00 pm in the choir room.
Cantus Choir Enrollment
Parents wishing to enroll their first or second graders in the Cantus Choir for the second semester should contact Linda Everhart at 933-4993.
NEW FOYER DINNER Group
If you were unable to sign up for a Foyer Dinner Group in the fall and would like to be part of a group now, please pick up a form in the parish hall or in the rear of the chapel. Foyer Dinners are a wonderful way to meet other parishioners and share a meal in a relaxed setting. Completed forms should be returned to the parish office by Jan. 31. For more information, contact Jane Steenstra or Amelia Carew at 545-0297.
Nominations for Vestry
The nomination period for election of vestry members begins today and ends Sunday, Feb. 11, at 6:30 pm. You may pick up a nomination form and review a list of eligible parishioners in the dining room and tower room. There is a box in the dining room for your nominations. Those who nominate parishioners should secure permission of the nominee before making the nomination. Nominators are also responsible for asking the nominee to complete a biographical questionnaire by the close of the nomination period.
Thank You For Warm Items
There were many appreciative people in the DC area last weekend who graciously received warm items (often thanking us with a "God Bless" comment) to keep them warmer through the remaining winter months. One homeless man who spoke with the Youth Inquirers' class on Saturday morning scheduled for us by the National Council on Homelessness, said that there is only one thing worse than being homeless and that is being homeless with cold feet. We were happy that your donations included thick socks! This is the second year the class has immersed itself in the problem of homelessness while on pilgrimage. It is an extraordinarily meaningful yet troubling weekend experience. Seek out a youth inquirer to hear more about their pilgrimage.
Mark Your Calendar
Candlemas

The Food of South Africa!!
Plan on having lunch at church on Sunday, Feb 3, and welcoming our seven visitors from the Kwasa Centre in Springs, South Africa. Dorothy Guma and Shirley Lee, two former residents of South Africa and now parishioners at The Chapel of the Cross, are planning an amazing and delicious meal for us to enjoy. No need to buy tickets, but please sign up in the parish office so we know how to plan our cooking. We'll start serving at 11:15 and continue until about 1. Cost: $5 for adults, $3 for children under 14. All proceeds will fund scholarships to help Kwasa Centre children stay in school. If you would like to help cook or work on this lunch, please contact Marty Hunter or Nancy Tunnessen .
Urban Caucus
The 2007 Episcopal Urban Caucus Assembly will meet February 7-10, 2007, at the Holiday Inn Brownstone, 1707 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27605. Program participants include Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori. Complete conference information and registration can be found online at www.episcopalurbancaucus.org or by calling (call office for number).
Youth at Kanuga
June 17-22 is Youth Week at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC. Senior Young People Conference was a great experience for me, one I hope to share with many of you this summer! SYP and JYP are both really popular conferences. They tend to fill up quickly. The cost for either conference is $410. Both Chapel of the Cross and Kanuga offer scholarships. Kanuga offers a discount for groups who register together - 10% for teams of 3 to 5 and 15% for teams of 6 or more. Please return your registration form and a $50 deposit to me by February 1. I will organize the team rebates. The remaining balance will be due to me by May 1. Pictures of recent conferences and descriptions of the 2007 conference are available at www.kanuga.org. -Caren Parker
J. Philip Newell Is Coming!
After almost two years of planning, J. Philip Newell will be with us leading our Lenten Retreat 2007 on March 2-3. Brochures are now available at key places around the parish. Registration forms are in the brochure. We are sponsoring this event with University Presbyterian Church and Watts Street Baptist in Durham. The title of the retreat is "The New Birthing of Christ: A Celtic Perspective." Sessions include "Listening for the Heartbeat of God: An Introduction to Celtic Spirituality," "The Memory of Wholeness: Christ and Creation in the Celtic Tradition" and "Christ, the Revelation of Love." Special music will be offered by Julee Glaub and Mark Weems. Register now!
Lenten Prayer Groups
Twenty three contemplative prayer groups will be offered for the season of Lent which begins on February 21 and concludes Holy Week, April 1. These groups will be limited to no more than 12 participants each and will meet once a week for six weeks for an hour and fifteen minutes except for Sunday mornings when the time is abbreviated. The groups will follow the same prayer form as last year's groups using the Ignatian prayer form which involves using the five senses to engage in scripture readings. Information about the prayer form and a registration form were in the December Cross Roads and will be in our upcoming Cross Roads the end of January. Forms are also available in key places around the parish buildings.
Stewardship
Support Team Volunteers Needed
A new support team is being formed to support a parishioner and family. A Support or Care team is a group of people who provide on-going attention and coordinated care to a person or family who, because of extended illness or disability, need the extra support. Types of assistance vary according to needs of the care recipient, but may include providing social contact, light housekeeping, running errands, reading aloud, preparing a meal, being an exercise partner. What a team does depends on their availability and imagination, and the needs of the care friend. Time involvement of team members is flexible depending on what each person has to give. Some may give an hour a month, others six or eight. Please contact Vicky Jamieson-Drake for more information.
Fast from Carbon
The Environmental Stewardship Committee is continuing its planning for a "Fast from Carbon for Lent" campaign. If you are interested in helping, please contact Linda Rimer at lbrimer@bellsouth.net.
Senior High Trip
The Chapel of the Cross is taking a Sr. High trip to New Orleans, LA, this summer. This trip is open to rising 9th-graders through just-graduated seniors. We have 20 places for youth on this trip. The dates of our trip are July 28 through August 5. To secure a place on this trip, the relevant forms and a $50 deposit are due by Feb. 1, (forms located outside David's office door and in the parish office). A $300 payment will be due March 26. The remaining balance of $300 will be due June 13. The cost of our trip to families is $650. This amount helps cover transportation, food, accommodations, work supplies, materials and activities for the week. We encourage youth to bring only a small amount of spending money for sodas, souvenirs and airport food. Whatever financial aid you need is available. Contact David Frazelle at 929-2193 to request scholarships.
Harris Teeter Suitcase Donations
Thompson Child & Family Focus has an ongoing need for suitcases that are new or in good condition. If you have earned a suitcase as part of the recent Harris Teeter VIC incentive program and do not need it, we hope that you will consider donating it to Thompson. We will be collecting suitcases until mid-February. If you have any questions, contact Lorraine Belden McBride or lbmcbride@aol.com.
