The Adult Inquirers' Class meets Monday nights in the parlor from 7:30 to 9:00. Staffed by the Rector and other clergy, this class explores Christianity from an Episcopal perspective. Believers raised in other traditions, new Christians, and Episcopalians looking for a deeper understanding of their faith will find this a stimulating and helpful course. It is required for adults wishing to be confirmed by Bishop Curry on May 6. No pre-registration necessary. Tomorrow's topic is "Worship and Sacrament," led by Stephen Elkins-Williams.

Next Sunday
Adult Ed Next Sunday
Here's your opportunity to learn more about Chapel of the Cross's new mission partnership in South Africa. The Venerable Sharron Dinnie will speak about her Springs, SA Anglican parish and their Kwasa Project which serves children whose parents have died or are very ill with HIV-AIDS. Since tuition is charged for public education in South Africa, Chapel of the Cross's Global Missions hopes to be able to help at least two young women continue their schooling.
The Food of South Africa!!
Plan on having lunch at church next Sunday and welcoming our seven visitors from the Kwasa Centre in Springs, South Africa. Dorothy Guma and Shirley Lee, two former residents of South Africa and now parishioners at The Chapel of the Cross, are planning an amazing and delicious meal for us to enjoy. No need to buy tickets, but please sign up in the parish office so we know how to plan our cooking. We'll start serving at 11:15 and continue until about 1. Cost: $5 for adults, $3 for children under 14. All proceeds will fund scholarships to help Kwasa Centre children stay in school. If you would like to help cook or work on this lunch, please contact Marty Hunter or Nancy Tunnessen .

Parish Notes
NEXT STEPS DIALOGUE MOVES FORWARD
The Parish Dialogue on Next Steps for Master Plan and Ministry has begun. This key activity - part of our Master Plan process - consists of bringing together all active members of the Chapel of the Cross in small group gatherings which will be held at parishioners' homes. In these sessions, we will share the long range plans and vision developed by the Next Step Committee and will review design concepts prepared last year. This vital activity will provide an opportunity for parishoners to share their views and ideas on the vision and associated master plan. In addition to the home gatherings, open sessions will be held Saturday, Feb. 3 at 10:00 am, (parlor), Wed., Feb. 7 at Noon (luncheon in the dining room) and Sat., Feb. 24 at 10:00 am, (parlor). If you would like to attend one of these open sessions, please contact the parish office at 929-2193 or email DialogueRSVP@thechapelofthecross.org. Please participate in this essential dialogue to help shape the future of the parish.
Parish Choir Openings
The Parish Choir seeks additional singers. If you are interested, call Dr. Quinn or simply come to a rehearsal, Monday nights at 7:00 in the choir room.
Cantus Choir Enrollment
Parents wishing to enroll their first or second graders in the Cantus Choir for the second semester should contact Linda Everhart.
New Foyer Dinner Group
If you were unable to sign up for a Foyer Dinner Group in the fall and would like to be part of a group now, please pick up a form in the parish hall or in the rear of the chapel. Foyer Dinners are a wonderful way to meet other parishioners and share a meal in a relaxed setting. Return completed forms to the parish office by Feb. 6. For more information, contact Jane Steenstra or Amelia Carew.
Nominations for Vestry
The nomination period for election of vestry members continues today and ends Sun., Feb. 11 at 6:30 pm. You may pick up a nomination form and review a list of eligible parishioners in the dining room and tower room. There is a box in the dining room for your nominations. Those who nominate parishioners should secure permission of the nominee before making the nomination. Nominators are also responsible for asking the nominee to complete a biographical questionnaire by the close of the nomination period.
Burmese Update
Thank you to all the parishioners who have so generously donated critically needed items for our Burmese families and for Say Ther and Tha Gay's expected baby. As announced last Sunday, Say Ther gave birth on Friday, January 26. Their daughter, named Monmai Gay, weighed 7 1/2 lbs and both she and Say Ther are home and doing well. The parish support has been a mainstay for them as they have gone through all this. Members of the team have been there to take them to multiple appointments, arrange translators, time labor contractions, hear the first cries of a new life and drive them home to their family. Our parish has done much to make this joyous event less stressful for a family who are welcome strangers in this community. They have received baby equipment and infant clothing to keep Monmai in good stead. Disposable infant diapers (smallest size for now), wipes or lotions are always welcome. Coupons for diapers can be put in the Social Ministry mailbox. If you would like to join the team working with our Burmese families, please contact Social Ministry Committee members, Barbara Tremblay btrem@verizon.net or Peggy Pratt pegpratt@nc.rr.com. There are many opportunities to participate in this experience. We have learned that Say Ther's and Pei Pi's parents and youngest sibs are due to arrive to this area in the next few weeks. We will not be their sponsors but know that they will have needs as new arrivals. This will be the finale of the resettlement of a large nuclear family to this community sponsored by many local churches. We ask you to please keep these families and those soon to arrive in your prayers. Thank you again to all for your generosity and your prayers.
Mark Your Calendar
Urban Caucus
The 2007 Episcopal Urban Caucus Assembly will meet February 7-10, 2007, at the Holiday Inn Brownstone, 1707 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27605. Program participants include Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori. Complete conference information and registration can be found online at www.episcopalurbancaucus.org or by calling (call office for number).
THE PRESIDING BISHOP IS COMING!
The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, will preside in our chapel at 3:30 pm on Thur., Feb. 8., on the 30th Anniversary of the Rev. Pauli Murray's first service of Holy Eucharist. Ms. Murray, whose grandmother, Cornelia, was baptized in the chapel in 1854, was the first African-American to be ordained an Episcopal priest, and she celebrated her first Holy Eucharist in the same chapel in February 1977. She later wrote of that service, "Whatever future ministry I might have as a priest, it was given to me that day to be a symbol of healing… Descendant of slave and of slave owner… I was empowered to minister the sacrament of One in whom there is no north or south, no black or white, no male or female - only the spirit of love and reconciliation drawing us all toward the goal of human wholeness."
ECM Parish Night
Jerusalem, City of Passion: One City, Three Faiths is the title of a panel presentation and discussion on Tuesday evening, February 13. This program is in conjunction with Episcopal Campus Ministry which will provide the meal at 5:45 pm. Please sign up for the meal in the parish office or on the Adult Education bulletin board in the dining room no later than Sun., Feb. 11. Our panel includes Rabbi John Friedman from the Judea Reform Synagogue in Durham, Dr. Mazhar Adli and the Rev. Stephen Elkins-Williams. The program will begin at 6:30.
Crossties returns Feb. 17
The fellowship group for 20- and 30-somethings (whether by age or by spirit) will meet again on Feb. 17. We will gather for a potluck supper in the dining room from 5:30 - 8:00 pm. Crossties is a chance to get to know other "young" adults in the parish, and to discuss key topics in the church and our lives. Childcare will be provided (for a small fee). For more information, contact Kirsten Sherk, ksherk@mindspring.com .
J. Philip Newell Is Coming!
After almost two years of planning, J. Philip Newell will be with us leading our Lenten Retreat 2007 on March 2-3. Brochures are now available at key places around the parish. Registration forms are in the brochure. We are sponsoring this event with University Presbyterian Church and Watts Street Baptist in Durham. The title of the retreat is "The New Birthing of Christ: A Celtic Perspective." Sessions include "Listening for the Heartbeat of God: An Introduction to Celtic Spirituality," "The Memory of Wholeness: Christ and Creation in the Celtic Tradition" and "Christ, the Revelation of Love." Special music will be offered by Julee Glaub and Mark Weems. Register now!
Lenten Prayer Groups
Twenty three contemplative prayer groups will be offered for the season of Lent which begins on February 21 and concludes Holy Week, April 1. These groups will be limited to no more than 12 participants each and will meet once a week for six weeks for an hour and fifteen minutes except for Sunday mornings when the time is abbreviated. The groups will follow the same prayer form as last year's groups using the Ignatian prayer form which involves using the five senses to engage in scripture readings. Information about the prayer form and a registration form were in the December Cross Roads and will be in our upcoming Cross Roads the end of January. Forms are also available in key places around the parish buildings.
Join us for the 2007 ABC Sale
The 45th annual Chapel of the Cross Attic, Basement and Closet sale is scheduled for April 21, 2007. This sale is one of the great traditions of our church. The purpose of the ABC Sale is to raise funds for social ministry outreach. After last year's sale, $25,000.00 was disbursed to a wide variety of worthy organizations. An equally important mission of the ABC Sale, and one that is priceless, is the fellowship this project builds within the church family. There are many opportunities for parishioners to contribute on sale day or during the work week that precedes it. How can you help? We need time, treasures and talent. Can you help us sort? Do you have some wonderful items that you just don't have a need for anymore? Do you have a special skill in marketing, antiques, art or organization? Can you bake for the bake sale? All of these talents and more are needed to make the sale a success. Please contact Ellen Cole at ehc430@aol.com or Allison Worthy aworthy@nc.rr.com to request further information or to volunteer. We look forward to hearing from you!
Destination San Patricio
In May parishioners from Chapel of the Cross will spend a week in work and fellowship with the people of Iglesia San Patricio in El Progreso, Honduras. Join this group as we answer the Church's-and the Gospel's-call to show God's love abroad in all the world. Mission brochures and application forms available at our display table, on the tract rack in the dining room, online, and at the back of the Chapel and the church. San Patricio has asked for COTC mission team assistance in:
· Vacation Church School for parish children
· Sunday School Teacher Training
· Altar Guild / Liturgical Training
· Light Construction
· Micro-Business Training for Cooperative Workshops
Return application forms to the church office by Sunday, February 4. For more information contact annhenley@msn.com. If you can't join the mission team, visit our after-services display table in the dining room and buy-at reduced prices-2007 calendars and packets of post cards featuring Chip Matteson's photographs of our 2006 mission trip to Honduras. Proceeds will help fund this year's mission trip.
Stewardship
Support Team Volunteers Needed
A new support team is being formed to support a parishioner and family. A Support or Care team is a group of people who provide on-going attention and coordinated care to a person or family who, because of extended illness or disability, need the extra support. Types of assistance vary according to needs of the care recipient, but may include providing social contact, light housekeeping, running errands, reading aloud, preparing a meal, being an exercise partner. What a team does depends on their availability and imagination, and the needs of the care friend. Time involvement of team members is flexible depending on what each person has to give. Some may give an hour a month, others six or eight. Please contact Vicky Jamieson-Drake for more information.
Fast from Carbon
The Environmental Stewardship Committee is continuing its planning for a "Fast from Carbon for Lent" campaign. If you are interested in helping, please contact Linda Rimer lbrimer@bellsouth.net.
Books for Kwasa Centre Library
Support the second Millennium Development Goal ("Achieve universal primary education') by contributing books for the library of the Kwasa Centre, a school in South Africa, sponsored by the Parish of St. Peter and St. Paul in the Diocese of the Highveld. We will be collecting children's books at Chapel of the Cross through the end of February. Place the books you are donating in the box outside Gretchen Jordan's office. High quality board books, picture books, story collections, and fiction are welcome, as are attractively done nonfiction books such as the Eyewitness series or Usborne-style books. In the interest of projecting a positive image of human potential, please avoid Disney and other cartoonish books and books with any reference to magic or witchcraft. Both new books and used books in good condtion will be accepted.
Donations of money are also appreciated, both for the purchase of books and the shipping of the books we collect. Turn your check in at the church office with a memorandum indicating it is for the Kwasa Centre Library.
If you have questions, please contact Lisa Ripperton by email (preferably) Lisa@MainLesson.com or phone.
Harris Teeter Suitcase Donations
Thompson Child & Family Focus has an ongoing need for suitcases that are new or in good condition. If you have earned a suitcase as part of the recent Harris Teeter VIC incentive program and do not need it, we hope that you will consider donating it to Thompson. We will be collecting suitcases until mid-February. If you have any questions, contact Lorraine Belden McBride or lbmcbride@aol.com.
The IFC Thanks You
Thank you for responding generously to requests for IFC solicitations for food, toiletries and other needs over Christmas. Our parish contributed significant amounts of these essential items to our neighbors in this community. Their needs continue. IFC has asked us to focus on two critical areas: food and volunteers to serve as interviewers and greeters in the Crisis Intervention Program. These are needed to handle expanded hours, walk-in requests for food and plans to extend outreach services to residents of Homestart and Community House. Training will be provided for interviewers and greeters. Food needs are for canned meats, fish, stews, pasta, pasta sauce, vegetables, soups, milk and juices, and for boxed cereals and rice and powdered milk. Food may either be delivered directly to the IFC Food Pantry at 110 W. Main St., Carrboro, or deposited in the box in the parish office. Consider bringing a canned item or two to church each week. Additional information on these needs is posted on the bulletin board, or from Alice Cotten at acotten@email.unc.edu, (H).
What can one person do to change the world?
Did you know that for $10, you can save a child's life? Malaria is one of the greatest health challenges faced by families in Africa, killing hundreds of thousands of children every year--and $10 will buy a bed net treated with insecticide that will stop the disease. Beating malaria and other childhood diseases is key to meeting Millennium Development Goal #4: Reduce by two-thirds the mortality rate for chidren under five. The Micah Group is studying how Chapel of the Cross can be part of the historic effort to meet the eight Millennium Development Goals. To learn more or to be a part of our efforts, contact Patricia Watts Hill, pawatts@earthlink.net, or visit Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation, www.e4gr.org.
Crop Walk
Inter Faith Council (IFC) is looking for people interested in coordinating or being on the CROP Walk planning committee. The 21st annual CROP walk is a fun, family-friendly event will be held on Sunday, April 15 and helps to raise money and awareness about local and world hunger. Please contact Charles Williams, ext. 15 or email at assistant@ifcmailbox.org.
