Faith in our Future
Thank you to all parishioners who have responded generously this past fall with pledges to support the important ministries of The Chapel of the Cross. At this writing, we still have over 80 families who pledged last year, but have not yet pledged this year. Annual Giving Committee members have been busy making reminder calls! Whether you have made a pledge before or if this is your first time pledging, all pledges are so critical to the budget and the essential work of the parish. We need you to please send in your pledge - as soon as possible - and join fellow parishioners in making a vital difference for 2007. Just contact the parish office and a new pledge form will be mailed to you or you can pledge online at: www.thechapelofthecross.org. Thank you!
Today
Episcopal Youth Community
EYC will not be meeting tonight. See you next week! EYC meets most Sundays from 5:30 - 7:30 in the dining room. We invite and encourage all sixth through twelfth graders to participate. Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions.
Living Into the Baptismal Covenant
Lent is a time associated with self-reflection - a time to review the covenant of Baptism, take stock of our lives and consider how one might fully live into the Baptismal vows. But our lives are already so full that adding even one more thing may seem overwhelming. During this gathering, we will consider the connection between faith and our everyday lives.
The Atonement
Many people struggle to understand the violence of the crucifixion and the sacrifice of Jesus. Today, the Rev. Stephen Elkins-Williams will guide us in a discussion about what the Atonement means to us and to the Christian faith.
12:15 Social Hour
12:15 Social Hour. Visitors, Newcomers, Old-timers! Come join us in the dining room for refreshments and fellowship.
Sung Compline Tonight
Sung Compline is offered on Sunday nights at 9:30. Please join us and "set your mind on the things that are above, where Christ is."
Troop 9 and Scout Sunday
Today we are observing Scout Sunday, an annual commemoration of the date when the Boy Scout program was first brought to the USA. Troop 9, sponsored by the Chapel of the Cross, is one of the oldest Scout troops in the area. We are a fairly small troop, with a program that emphasizes outdoor adventure and backpacking. We are always looking for new members; we meet here at the Chapel of the Cross on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm, downstairs in the Yates wing. If you are currently a Webelos Scout (or a Webelos Scout's parent) looking for a Boy Scout troop, we'd love to meet you! We also welcome any interested boys, sixth grade or older, who are not currently in a Scout program. For more information, call Scoutmaster Gregg Gerdau (call church office for number) or see the troop website at www.t9ch.org/.
This Week
The Adult Inquirers' Class
The Adult Inquirers' Class meets Monday nights in the parlor from 7:30 to 9:00. Tomorrow's topic is "Personal Prayer " led by David Frazelle.
Episcopal Campus Ministry - Parish Night
Jerusalem, City of Passion: One City, Three Faiths is the title of a panel presentation and discussion on Tuesday evening, February 13. This program is in conjunction with Episcopal Campus Ministry which will provide the meal at 5:45 pm. Please sign up for the meal in the parish office or on the Adult Education bulletin board in the dining room. Today, Sunday Feb 11 is the last chance to sign up for dinner. Anyone is welcome to the 6:30 panel discussion, but you must sign up in the parish office to eat dinner with ECMers at 5:45pm.
Crossties Returns February 17
The fellowship group for 20- and 30-somethings (whether by age or by spirit) will meet again on Feb. 17. We will gather for a potluck supper in the dining room from 5:30 - 8:00 pm. Crossties is a chance to get to know other "young" adults in the parish, and to discuss key topics in the church and our lives. Childcare will be provided (for a small fee). For more information, contact Kirsten Sherk, ksherk@mindspring.com.

Nominations for Vestry
The nomination period for election of vestry members ends today, Feb. 11, at 6:30 pm. You may pick up a nomination form and review a list of eligible parishioners in the dining room and tower room. There is a box in the dining room for your nominations. Those who nominate parishioners should secure permission of the nominee before making the nomination. Nominators are also responsible for asking the nominee to complete a biographical questionnaire by the close of the nomination period.
Inclement Weather Information
When icy or snowy weather occurs, we will make decisions about cancellation of services or office hours as early as possible. Generally, Sunday morning services will be held, but parishioners and staff should check for announcements before coming. Announcements will be made on WRAL and WTVD television stations, and on WCHL-1360 radio. There will also be an announcement on the parish voice mail system if there is no interruption in power. To access the voice mail announcement, dial 929-2193, and press 1 for touch tone phone, then press 7 for the announcement about inclement weather. If icy conditions cause a power outage in the parish house, the voice mail system will not operate. In all cases, we'll open the parish office as soon as our staff feels conditions are safe for driving.
Web Site Update
The parish web site is undergoing a renovation and your opinions are needed. Please log on to www.thechapelofthecross.org and fill out the brief survey listed on the home page. The survey should take fewer than 10 minutes of your time and will give the committee working on web site improvements helpful information that will result in a "new and improved" site for the entire parish. We would like to have as much information as possible during the month of February. Many thanks for taking time to share your opinions.

This year's sale is scheduled for April 21. We hope that you can join us as we welcome the community into our church home. We are in urgent need of a few special things. Can you help us with... STORAGE? If you have extra space in your attic, basement or closet, we would love to hear from you. A TRUCK? Nancy Tunnessen (call office for number) is coordinating the large item pick-up for the sale. Please call her. SCHEDULING? If you anticipate needing help in bringing your merchandise to the sale, please call Nancy Tunnessen by Friday, April 13, so she can best coordinate the drivers. BROWN BAGS? Please start collecting brown paper bags for use during the sale. We will be answering questions, recruiting volunteers and collecting bags at a table in the dining room after each service beginning February 11. Please contact ABC Sale co-chairmen Allison Worthy (call office for number, aworthy@nc.rr.com) or Ellen Cole (call office for number, ehc430@aol.com) if you can help with the sale or if we can answer any questions.
Stewardship
Books for Kwasa Centre Library
Support the second Millennium Development Goal ("Achieve universal primary education") by contributing books for the library of the Kwasa Centre, a school in South Africa, sponsored by the Parish of St. Peter and St. Paul in the Diocese of the Highveld. We will be collecting children's books at Chapel of the Cross through the end of February. Place the books you are donating in the box outside Gretchen Jordan's office. High quality board books, picture books, story collections, and fiction are welcome, as are attractively done nonfiction books such as the Eyewitness series or Usborne-style books. In the interest of projecting a positive image of human potential, please avoid Disney and other cartoonish books and books with any reference to magic or witchcraft. Both new books and used books in good condition will be accepted. Donations of money are also appreciated, both for the purchase of books and the shipping of the books we collect. Turn your check in at the church office with a memorandum indicating it is for the Kwasa Centre Library. If you have questions, please contact Lisa Ripperton by email (preferably) Lisa@MainLesson.com or phone (call office for number).
ECM Spring Break Mission Trip
ECM is continuing its commitment to helping with the rebuilding effort on the Gulf Coast. We are returning to Camp Coast Care for our Spring Break Mission Trip. All college students are invited to join. Please contact Elizabeth Pfeifer (epfeifer@email.unc.edu) for more information or to sign up.
30 Hour Famine
29,000 children die every day from hunger. On February 23-24 Chapel of the Cross and University United Methodist Church will be hosting the 30 Hour Famine, sponsored by World Vision. For more details about this organization, visit www.30hourfamine.org. This event gives us an opportunity help while learning more about people in need. $1 a day can feed a child. Please consider sponsoring an EYC member for the 30 Hour Famine this year. If you are interested in offering matching gifts, please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org. Thank you!
What can one person do to change the world?
Malaria is one of the greatest health challenges faced by families in Africa, killing hundreds of thousands of children every year--and $10 will buy a bed net treated with insecticide that will stop the disease. Beating malaria and other childhood diseases is key to meeting Millennium Development Goal 4: Reduce by two-thirds the mortality rate for chidren under five. The Micah Group is studying how Chapel of the Cross can be part of the historic effort to meet the eight Millennium Development Goals. To learn more or to be a part of our efforts, contact Patricia Watts Hill, pawatts@earthlink.net, or visit Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation, www.e4gr.org.
Volunteers Needed
Now that most of our Burmese friends are in an ESL class, they can use some help there. If you are interested in assisting their ESL teacher on any Monday through Thursday, 9 - 11:30, at the University United Methodist Church on E. Franklin St, please contact Joann Molnare at Durham Tech ESL, 686-3758.
Global Missions Thanks You
Global Missions gives special thanks to all who helped to make our South African visitors welcome:
The parishioners of the Chapel of the Cross showered their extraordinary hospitality on seven visitors from St Peter/St. Paul parish in the Diocese of the Highveld, South Africa this past weekend. They were welcomed with good food and fellowship throughout their time here and were carefully introduced to Chapel Hill and to our church community. We wish to especially thank the committee members who worked with us: Matha Dill, Nancy Tunnessen, Blair Evans, Marty Hunter, Shirley Lee, Dorothy Guma and our photographers Chip Matteson and Jerry Cotten.
Thanks especially to those who made a home away from home for our guests: The Pate Family, Marsha, Andy, Charlotte, Ellie and John; the Revs. Susannah and Ralph Smith; Linda and Alan Rimer and Martha and David Dill. We also thank Blair and George Evans who provided a luncheon for our guests and members of the parish and Dorothy Guma and Shirley Lee who cooked an authentic African luncheon for everyone on Sunday (and Nancy Tunnessen who organized the planning for the luncheon).
A commitment to warm and genuine hospitality was in evidence to our seven visitors as was our reaching out to each other. We give thanks for the diversity of the Body of Christ in our midst. Those who want to contribute to or request more information about the school, Kwasa Centre and St. Peter/St. Paul should contact Ann Henley: annhenley@msn.com or Barbara Day: bday1@email.unc.edu.
