Preparing for Lent and your "fast" from carbon
Today you will have the opportunity to measure your "carbon footprint," that is, to measure the amount of carbon dioxide that you and your family put out into the atmosphere which contributes toward global warming and the changing of the climate of Earth, God's creation. This is the first step in your "carbon fast" for Lent. Members of the Environmental Stewardship Committee will be helping you to calculate your carbon footprint.
Lenten Question of the Week
During Lent, we are offering to stimulate household discussions every week with the Sunday gospel reading. This week's gospel lesson is Luke 4:1-13. The question is what temptations do you face and how does your faith help you resist?
This Week
The Adult Inquirers' Class
The Adult Inquirers' Class meets Monday nights in the parlor from 7:30 to 9:00. Tomorrow's topic is "The Book of Common Prayer" led by Ms. Lee
Still looking for a Lenten observance?
Centering Prayer continues to meet throughout Lent on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:45 pm in Room 1, in the basement of the church. All are welcome. No prior experience or attendance is necessary. Bring your ideas about engaging others in this ministry. Breakfast will be provided. If you have a prayer request, please forward it to tony@tonyhawkinsre.com.
Shepherds to Newcomers
The Hospitality Guild will have a meeting of its "Shepherds to Newcomers" on Tuesday, Feb. 27, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm in the parish library. Shepherds are parishioners who are paired to Newcomers after they have signed up at the Newcomers table. Shepherds call newcomers to welcome them to Chapel of the Cross and find out if they have questions or specific needs. Shepherds call their newcomers 3 months later to inquire whether they have questions, needs, or have not become involved in the church. If interested in this ministry, please plan to attend. All are welcome. If you have further questions call Barbara Day (call office for number) or Mary Schoenfeld (call office for number).

IFC: Please "Give" During Lent
The IFC Food Pantry continues to need our help as it struggles to meet the increasing needs of those in our community who lack adequate food. During Lent, please consider not just "giving up" something but "giving" something, in this case, food for those who are hungry. Specific requests are for Ramen noodles, canned fruit, macaroni and cheese, canned pasta, canned pinto beans and dry beans (pinto, black and lentil). Collection containers are in the parish office and the tower room at the entrance to the church. Other needs are posted on the Social Ministry Committee bulletin board in the dining room, as well as on the bulletin board in the hall outside the office. As we come to church during the Lenten season, consider bringing a can or two of food.
Easter Lily Fundraiser
Order an Easter lily after Sunday services to benefit the UNC/COTC Habitat for Humanity Partnership. With a donation of $15, receive a single-stemmed (4-5 blooms) Easter Lily on Palm Sunday ready for Easter morning. Orders will be accepted until March 25 and forms will also be available in the church office. All the money collected is in support of ECM students Meredith Gilliam, Chris Jochem, and Mary Olive Jones who are joining a team of 30 students biking from Manteo, NC to San Diego, CA to raise money and awareness for affordable housing as part of Bike and Build. Bike and Build is a national organization, www.bikeandbuild.org. Half of the funds from the trip from North Carolina to San Diego will directly benefit the UNC/COTC Habitat Partnership. Our team is trying to raise over $60,000 for Orange County Habitat for Humanity. For more information please contact Chris jochem@email.unc.edu.
