Announcements
Girl Scout Sunday, March 18
Today we are observing Girl Scout Sunday as part of our annual celebration of the founding of Girl Scouts by Juliette Gordon Low in 1912. Girl Scout Sunday gives girls an opportunity to attend their place of worship and be recognized as girl scouts. Chapel of the Cross has girl scouts who are active participants in our youth programs, including Junior Choir, youth lectors, acolytes, Youth Saints, Episcopal Youth Community and church school. Any girl scouts who are attending the 9:00 am service are encouraged to join us in the front pews. We invite everyone to join us for refreshments (cookies!) in the dining room following the 9:00 am service. Girl Scouting is a dynamic program that helps girls to cultivate values, social conscience, and self-esteem, while also teaching them critical life skills that will enable them to succeed as adults. Want to learn more? Contact Rose Wignall by email at rwignall@nc.rr.com or call the church office.
Sung Compline Tonight
Sung Compline is offered on Sunday nights at 9:30. Please join us and "set your mind on the things that are above, where Christ is."
12:15 Social Hour
Visitors, Newcomers, Old-timers! Come join us in the dining room for refreshments and fellowship.

Still looking for a Lenten observance?
Centering Prayer now meets throughout Lent on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 6:30 pm in Room 1, in the basement of the church. All are welcome. No prior experience or attendance is necessary. Centering Prayer is a contemporary form of the ancient Christian practice of contemplative prayer. Contact David Frazelle, 929-2193, dfrazelle@thechapelofthecross.org, with questions.
Episcopal Youth Community
EYC will meet in the dining room at 5:30 tonight for a Variety Show - Music Night and More! Come ready to share your talents - music, dance, comedy, etc. There will be some musicians from Episcopal Campus Ministry and some of EYC's own. Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions.
Adult Education in Lent
During Lent, contemplative prayer groups will continue to meet weekly (previous registration is required). Resources and information on other Lenten opportunities (such as the "carbon fast" sponsored by the Environmental Stewardship Committee, the Labyrinth at Binkley Baptist Church April 1-6 and the new El Hogar Home for Girls) are available in the dining room.
Next Week

There are eight nominees for the vestry election. They are Valerie Bateman, Eugene Dauchert, David Dill, Tony Hawkins, Susannah Holloway, Doug Kelly, Ele Ross and Jimmy Satterwhite. Vestry elections will take place after each regular service today, up through the 5:15pm service. A run-off election will be held Sunday, March 25 if needed.
Hospitality Manager Needed
The parish is seeking a person for a part-time position responsible for maintaining the orderliness and hospitality of our facility, especially the kitchen, dining room and parlor as well as serve as a resource for groups using these areas. This position is for up to fifteen (15) hour per week and pays $10.00 per hour. It may require some flexible hours including weekends and Sundays for special services. For more information and a full job description, contact Barbara Hastings at 929-2193.
Children, Palms & Flowers
Children who attend Children's Chapel will have a choice of participating in a processional with palms on Palm Sunday (April 1) and with flowers on Easter (April 8) either in the Children's Chapel service or in the 9:00 am service. If parents would prefer the processional in the 9:00 am service, they will need to escort children to Children's Chapel and sign them in with Joy Gattis. Children in first grade and higher are encouraged to participate in the 9:00 am processionals on both Sundays. Members of the Children and Family Ministry Committee will meet with children on the lawn in front of the church or in the dining room if weather requires indoor gathering. Parents do not need to accompany the older children but are asked to save a seat in the church so children can join them after processing. Please remember to bring fresh flowers to help decorate the cross for the Easter service.
Palm Preparation
Altar guild members and parishioners are invited to prepare palms for the Palm Sunday service. Volunteers will meet in the Parish Hall from 9:00 am - 11:00 am on Saturday, March 31 to clean and bunch palms. A sign-up sheet is posted on the door of the Sacristy. Call Janet Turchi (call church office for number) for further information.

Eradicating Global Poverty
Beginning Tuesday, April 10, for five consecutive weeks, there will be an opportunity for small group study, reflection and discussion using a new curriculum developed by the National Council of Churches on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's). The study is sponsored by the Micah Group as we continue to deepen our understanding of our engagement with the MDG's and is open to all parishioners. The six sessions are structured around the eight internationally agreed upon goals to end extreme poverty, hunger and disease by 2015. The study includes human interest stories, facts, figures, Bible passages, questions for discussion and action steps.
The book's author, Lalli Lloyd, Chair of the Episcopal Church's Standing Commission on Domestic Mission and Evangelism, will be with us at our first session. Copies of the book are $8.50 and can be provided without charge if needed. You may sign up in the church office or by contacting Patricia Watts Hill (Call church for number) or e-mail pawatts@earthlink.net.
Stewardship
IFC: Please "Give" During Lent
The IFC Food Pantry continues to need help meeting the increasing needs of those in our community who lack adequate food. Specific requests are for Ramen noodles, canned fruit, macaroni and cheese, canned pasta, canned pinto beans and dry beans (pinto, black and lentil). As you come to church during Lent, consider bringing a can or two of food. Containers for food offerings are in the tower room at the entrance to the church and in the parish office. More information is available from Alice Cotten at acotten@email.unc.edu
Habitat for Humanity
The UNC Student/Chapel of the Cross Habitat for Humanity Partnership will dedicate a new home for Barbara Hopkins and her family on Sunday, March 25 at 2 pm. All parishioners are warmly invited to participate, and refreshments will be available. The home is at 1715 Purefoy Drive in Chapel Hill, and directions are available at www.orangehabitat.org/purefoy_directions.html
Carbon Fast in Lent
The Environmental Stewardship Committee hopes you are doing well with your fast from carbon. Please remember to calculate and report the carbon reductions that you and your family achieve during Lent. There will be a drop-box in the dining room for collecting this information. The Rector will be announcing the Parish total after Easter. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Rimer at lbrimer@bellsouth.net or call the church office for her number.
ABC Sale
There are so many ways that you can help during the ABC Sale. This year's Sale is scheduled for April 21. It takes time, treasures and talent to provide the quality sale that our community has come to expect. In addition to volunteering during the Sale and Sale week, can you help us in the Garden and Bake Shops? We need as many plants as possible, preferably potted (as opposed to bagged). Potted plants sell the best. In addition, we have found that perennials, bulbs and shrub seedlings are very popular with our customers. It is most important, however, that all plants donated be labeled by type and color. And, although we welcome any donations, liriope, ivy and other ground covers are not big sellers. Please contact Jerry and Lynn Gschwind (call parish office for number) if you have any questions concerning the Garden Shop.
To help in the Bake Shop, please consider baking a homemade item and donating it . Our customers (and many of us!) enjoy these items so much. Donations will be accepted in the Campus Center on Friday, April 20. If you do bake for the sale, please include a list of ingredients. Please contact Kim Sullivan, Cricket Taylor or Betsy Vaden (Please call parish office for numbers) with any questions concerning the Bake Shop. Thank you for your time and your interest in the ABC Sale. Please contact Co-chairs, Allison Worthy (aworthy@nc.rr.com) or Ellen Cole (ehc430@aol.com) if you have any questions or suggestions about the sale.
