Parish Notes

Vestry Election Results

The vestry elections are complete. Congratulations to those elected: David Dill, Tony Hawkins, Ele Ross and Jimmy Satterwhite.

Adult Education Brochures

Please pick up an Adult Education Spring brochure outlining all the educational opportunities for March through early June. You can find these in the parish dining room and at the back of the church and chapel. For more information, contact Gretchen Jordan at the church.

Hospitality Manager Needed

The parish is seeking a person for a part-time position responsible for maintaining the orderliness and hospitality of our facility, especially the kitchen, dining room and parlor as well as serve as a resource for groups using these areas. This position is for up to fifteen (15) hour per week and pays $10.00 per hour. It may require some flexible hours including weekends and Sundays for special services. For more information and a full job description, contact Barbara Hastings at 929-2193.

Children, Palms & Flowers

Children who attend Children's Chapel will have a choice of participating in a processional with palms on Palm Sunday (April 1) and with flowers on Easter (April 8) either in the Children's Chapel service or in the 9:00 am service. If parents would prefer the processional in the 9:00 am service, they will need to escort children to Children's Chapel and sign them in with Joy Gattis. Children in first grade and higher are encouraged to participate in the 9:00 am processionals on both Sundays. Members of the Children and Family Ministry Committee will meet with children on the lawn in front of the church or in the dining room if weather requires indoor gathering. Parents do not need to accompany the older children but are asked to save a seat in the church so children can join them after processing. Please remember to bring fresh flowers to help decorate the cross for the Easter service.

Lenten Offering

We hope many of you are filling up your purple cans with coins and bills to help purchase furniture and accessories for the new girls' home at El Hogar in Honduras. This special collection will be gathered on Easter Sunday, April 8 and the two weeks following. A priest from Honduras will be visiting our parish on April 29 and will speak during the Adult Education forum. Our children and youth will present him with a check reflecting the amount collected by the parish. Your support is encouraged! Checks are welcome and can be made payable to Chapel of the Cross earmarked "Lenten Offering". For more information contact Gretchen Jordan at the church.

Women's Retreat

A group of enthusiastic women parishioners have initiated planning for a women's retreat at Trinity Center, the Eastern North Carolina diocese conference center at Salter Path. While it is almost a year away, a deposit is due now to insure our spaces. Therefore, women of the parish, pick up a brochure in the dining room to learn more about the retreat taking place February 8-10, 2008 and register to attend with a $20.00 deposit. 12 double occupancy rooms are tentatively reserved and an additional eight are available. Triple occupancy is also an option. The weekend will be led by parishioners and staff and combine study, reflection and play. For more information contact Gretchen Jordan at the church.

Website Update

Work on updating the parish web site continues. The committee sends thanks to everyone who completed the survey in February. Information from the survey has been very helpful in planning for a "new and improved" web site. Continue to send your thoughts and ideas to Communications Coordinator, Vivian Harris Varner, vvarner@thechapelofthecross. org.

Eradicating Global Poverty

Beginning Tuesday, April 10, for five consecutive weeks, there will be an opportunity for small group study, reflection and discussion using a new curriculum developed by the National Council of Churches on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's). The study is sponsored by the Micah Group as we continue to deepen our understanding of our engagement with the MDG's and is open to all parishioners. The six sessions are structured around the eight internationally agreed upon goals to end extreme poverty, hunger and disease by 2015. The study includes human interest stories, facts, figures, Bible passages, questions for discussion and action steps.

The book's author, Lalli Lloyd, Chair of the Episcopal Church's Standing Commission on Domestic Mission and Evangelism, will be with us at our first session. Copies of the book are $8.50 and can be provided without charge if needed. You may sign up in the church office or by contacting Patricia Watts Hill (Call church for number) or e-mail pawatts@earthlink.net.

The IFC Food Pantry continues to need help meeting the increasing needs of those in our community who lack adequate food. Specific requests are for Ramen noodles, canned fruit, macaroni and cheese, canned pasta, canned pinto beans and dry beans (pinto, black and lentil). As you come to church during Lent, consider bringing a can or two of food. Containers for food offerings are in the tower room at the entrance to the church and in the parish office. The Rector will be announcing the Parish total after Easter. If you have any questions, please contact Linda Rimer at lbrimer@bellsouth.net or call the church office for her number.

ABC Sale

In planning your donations for the ABC Sale, please note that we accept almost any type of merchandise, from furniture to clothing, household items to antiques, books to toys. Please, however, do not donate torn, dirty or broken items. Please be aware that some items do not sell well, such as encyclopedias, medical and law texts and holiday items. If you have any questions about an item, please check with us first. Unfortunately, we cannot accept computers, printers, mattresses, futons, car seats, sleeper sofas, metal bed frames (without headboards), oversized furniture or large appliances. If you have any of these items, please chat with us when you drop off your other merchandise, we will have a list of places that do accept them.

The ABC Sale is a treasure of a sale. Everything about it supports community, within our church and globally. It provides a valuable service and fellowship. We cannot do it without your help. If you are unable to help this year because of scheduling conflicts or other reasons, you can also help by making a contribution to the Sale to help defray our operating costs. A Treasured Affair

Years ago, on a Sunday afternoon before the ABC Sale, the ECW held a tea to which treasures were brought and appraised by an expert. It was a lively event that afforded attendees a free appraisal of their donation to the Treasures Room along with a spot of tea and good conversation. In celebration of the 45th annual ABC Sale, this old tradition will be resurrected with a slightly different twist.

This year, we would like to invite parishioners to A Treasured Affair, an early evening gathering to which you are asked to bring a quality item, old or new, for donation to the ABC Sale. David Lindquist, owner of Whitehall Antiques at the Villa, will offer his expert appraisal of your donation. Wyndham Robertson will host the event.

Lenten Question of the Week

During Lent, we are offering to stimulate household discussions every week with the Sunday gospel reading. This week's gospel lesson is Luke 20:9-19. The question is in what ways do you live as a tenant or steward of God's world, of God's resources, and of the life God has given you? In what ways do you live as if you were the owner?

Nursery care for infants and young children is available; ask an usher for directions. Children's and Large print bulletins are available from an usher.

The Environmental Stewardship Committee Green Tip :

Reduce your carbon footprint: Keep the tires on your car adequately inflated. Check them monthly and save 250 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $840 a year!
