12:15 pm Social hour

Visitors, Newcomers and Old-timers, come join us in the dining room for refreshments and fellowship.

Sung Compline Tonight

The final sung Compline of the academic year is tonight at 9:30. Please join us and "set your mind on the things that are above, where Christ is."

Episcopal Youth Community

If the weather permits, EYC will be outside tonight. We will meet from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the dining room and move out from there. Things could get messy, so please bring a towel and some extra clothes. If you have any questions, please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org.

Pentecost Picnic

Tickets for the Pentecost Picnic on Sunday, May 27 at 12:45 pm go on sale today! This year's picnic will be held at Umstead Park just off Martin Luther King Blvd., much closer to the church than last year's site. You can purchase tickets between the 9:00 and 11:15 services in the dining room or in the parish office during office hours. Tickets will be available through Sunday, May 20. The meal will include hot dogs, hamburgers, chicken and veggie burgers with all the trimmings. Tickets are $5.00 each with a $20.00 family maximum. This is a parish wide picnic! Teachers, leaders and assistants in the education programs are honored. There will be birthday cake to celebrate the church's birthday, retelling of the Acts 2 story and singing led by a group of parish musicians.

Social Ministries committee

The Social Ministry Committee will be meeting today in the library from 1 pm - 3 pm. Our guest in the first hour will be Ellie Kinnaird. She will be giving a presentation on "Our Children's Place," an alternative residential facility being developed in Orange County for incarcerated women and their young children and infants. Parishioners are welcome to attend.

Adult Education "Who, me? Teach?"

Join Boykin Bell and Gretchen Jordan to experience what participation as a student or teacher in a Church School classroom is like. If you have never taught in one of the children and youth programs, desire a mini refresher, or simply want to experience what children and youth do from 10:20 am - 11:05 am on Sundays, go to the Campus Center following 9:00 worship. This class will be repeated next Sunday for those who cannot attend today. This orientation and introduction to Church School teaching does not include any expectation that those who attend are ready and willing to sign on for the fall as teachers. It is our hope that it will be food for thought, though!

This Week

Adult Inquirers' Class

The Adult Inquirers' Class meets Monday nights from 7:30 to 9:00. Tomorrow's topic will be "Social Ministry" with Dr. Joyner and Ms. Hart.

Next Sunday

Bread for the World

On Sunday, May 13, The Micah Group will present background information about Bread for the World, a Christian citizens' advocacy movement which works on behalf of hungry and poor people. We will learn how improvements to the U.S. farm bill can impact hungry people in our country and those in the developing world. Join us next Sunday when we will participate in the 2007 Bread for the World Offering of Letters by writing letters to our members of Congress.

Parish Notes

A Resignation

Tom Mander has resigned his position as Facilities Manager effective immediately. During his five years of service, Tom has served the parish by initiating system controls which save resources and managing contracts for the most cost-effective and efficient services. We wish Tom well and thank him for his service here.

Counters Needed

Each Monday morning a group of parishioners meets to count and deposit all money received by the parish during the prior week. We need additional people for this important committee. The group meets at 8:30 each Monday and is usually finished by 11:00. If you would be interested in providing this service to the parish please call the parish accountant, Debby Kulik, at 929-2193. If she is not in the office, please leave a message and she will return your call.

ABC Sale

Many thanks to all who participated in the 2007 ABC Sale. In one week, we had hundreds of volunteers, thousands of items donated and many happy shoppers. The Social Ministries Committee is already busy planning how to distribute the nearly $32,000 raised on April 21, 2007. While the financials are important, the greater benefit of the sale is the fellowship it builds throughout our parish. A week spent working together, praying together and, this year, lighting candles together is priceless. Thank you again to all who contributed time, talent and treasures.

God and Me/ God and Family Programs

God and Me and God and Family are programs designed to help grade school children expand their spiritual development through study of scripture, discussion, and activities. These programs are popular with children in scouting programs but are available to all Protestant children. God and Me is for second and third graders and explores core tenets of Christian faith. God and Family is for fourth and fifth graders and addresses Christianity in the context of the family. Each involves a series of hour-long group sessions for participants (five for God and Me, seven for God and Family) plus home study and activities. If you are interested, please contact Frank McBride or StratAdvan@aol.com as soon as possible.

Vacation Church School to be Filled Soon

Registration is ongoing for our July 23-27 morning program, but, parents, please note that some of the classes are nearing capacity. If you plan to attend, please register now. Forms are available outside the Educators' office and in the dining room. We have changed the week and the ages of participation. Children must be entering kindergarten in the fall to register for this summer.

Art display

"Celebrate God's Creation" is a window of color and expression offered by children of the parish in observance of Earth Day. Children were invited to depict things in nature that elicited a response like, "Whoa, how in the world did God create that!" or to depict a place where they feel the power of God's presence. A variety of art responses await your gaze in the window looking out on the courtyard. Children made sketches in pencil which were copied onto transparencies and then colored with permanent markers. We trust this stained glass window art will offer to you the joy and awe of God's creations.

Stewardship

Thompson Child & Family Focus

Share your heart and resources. Pick up a heart at the Thompson's table in the dining room beginning today. Buy the item listed on the heart and return it UNWRAPPED to the parish office by June 10. Thompson Child & Family Focus (formerly Thompson Children's Home) now offers year-round school and has a great need for summer uniforms - khaki shorts, polo shirts, sneakers, and short socks. They can also use one-piece swimsuits, underwear, other colors of shorts, and solid color t-shirts this year. Regulations require that only new clothing, bed linens & towels be donated, although gently used clothing can be accepted for infants to 5 year olds in Thompson's Day Care Child Development facilities. For more information, please call Susan Thomason or Dina Urquhart.Financial contributions can also be made to "The Chapel of The Cross" with note on check for: "The Rector's Discretionary Fund/Thompson Child & Family Focus clothes". Or if you prefer, Wal-Mart, Target and other department clothing store gift cards are most welcome!

Community Notes

Community Chorus

The Chapel Hill Community Chorus will present its annual spring concert on Saturday, May 19, at 7:30 pm at Memorial Hall on the UNC campus. Admission is $15.00 for adults and $6.00 for students. Led by Dr. Sue Klausmeyer, the group will present Mendelssohn's Elijah. Several parishioners sing with this group.

Post office Food Drive

The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold a food drive on Saturday, May 12. The drive will benefit the hungry here in Orange County. Just place non-perishable food items next to your mailbox. Volunteers are also needed to help take the collected food from local post offices to the Inter-Faith Council office in Carrboro, especially those with pick-up trucks and SUVs. If you can help out, call Kristin Lavergne at the IFC, ext. 41 or servicesdirector@ifcmailbox.org.

Club Nova Thrift Shop

Located in Carrboro, Club Nova promotes and provides opportunities for individuals living with mental illness to lead meaningful and productive lives of their choice in the community. As a non-profit organization, Club Nova raises funds for its programs through its adjoining thrift shop. The thrift shop offers quality second-hand goods such as clothing, books, music, household and kitchen items and select furniture. Open Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, Club Nova Thrift Shop gladly accepts both material and monetary contributions during regular business hours ( all donations are tax deductible). Mother Earth-Friendly Gifts for Mother's Day

· This year, as May 13 approaches, the Environmental Stewardship Committee invites you to consider a gift for Mom and Grandmom that will also be protective of Mother Earth, our planet and God's Creation. Here are some ideas for you to consider:

· A plant instead of cut flowers (to later be planted in the garden);

· A tree, to be planted to provide habitat for birds, clean the water, hold the soil, sequester carbon;

· A compost bin, for food scraps, leaves and grass clippings. It will be good for the garden and will save energy and water from running those food scraps through the garbage disposal;

· A "gift certificate" for your time and effort, for spring cleaning, doing the laundry, running errands;

· Shade grown, organic, fair-trade coffee, to protect bird habitats and workers;

· Gifts made by local artists, to support local economies and reduce environmental impacts from long shipping routes;

· A programmable thermostat, to protect the climate and air quality and save 20% on fuel costs;

· A low flow shower head, to conserve water and energy and save money;

· A package of compact fluorescent light bulbs, to reduce energy, protect the climate and save money;

· A subscription to NC GreenPower (http://www.ncgp.org), to support renewable energy and protect our climate;

· Memberships to community, environmental, or relief organizations;

· A ceiling fan, to protect the climate and air quality, by cooling the air in summer (increasing air circulation) and warming the air in winter (forcing warmer air downward);

· An erasable bulletin board, to save paper;

· Durable and long-lasting items that replace disposable or highly polluting items e.g. cloth napkins, handkerchiefs, refillable pens, insulated coffee mugs, canvas shopping bags;

· A drip irrigation system, to conserve water while keeping a lovely garden;

· A bicycle or tricycle -with a basket - for running short errands;

· And if you send cards, consider making your card by hand or purchasing a card made from recycled paper.

Your Mom will be pleased that you are demonstrating your stewardship of God's creation.

The Environmental Stewardship Committee Green Tip :

For Green Gardens: Soaker hoses and drip irrigation systems are best for delivering water slowly and directly to your plants, especially important during times of dry weather.
