Today

Episcopal Youth Community

No EYC tonight!! Be really nice to your mom! We will meet at 7:00 pm next Sunday to support the Junior Choir for their yearly concert. EYC meets most Sunday evenings in the dining room from 5:30 to 7:30. Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions.

Pentecost Picnic

Tickets for the Pentecost Picnic on Sunday, May 27, at 12:45 pm are on sale today and next Sunday! This year's picnic will be held at Umstead Park just off Martin Luther King Blvd., much closer to the church than last year's site. You can purchase tickets between the 9:00 and 11:15 services in the dining room or in the parish office during office hours. Tickets will be available through Sunday, May 20. The meal will include hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers and chicken with all the trimmings. Tickets are $5.00 each with a $20.00 family maximum. This is a parish wide picnic! Teachers, leaders and assistants in the education programs are honored. There will be birthday cake to celebrate the church's birthday, retelling of the Acts 2 story and singing led by a group of parish musicians.

God and Me/ God and Family Programs

There will be a brief informational meeting for all students interested in the "God and Me" and "God and Family" programs and their parents. The meeting will be held in basement Room 4/5 immediately after Church School today. "God and Me" is for second and third graders and explores the core tenets of Christian faith. "God and Family" is for fourth and fifth graders and explores Christianity in the context of the family. If you have questions, please contact Frank McBride at StratAdvan@aol.com.

Adult Education "Who, me? Teach?"

Join Boykin Bell and Gretchen Jordan to experience what participation as a student or teacher in a Church School classroom is like. If you have never taught in one of the children and youth programs, desire a mini refresher, or simply want to experience what children and youth do from 10:20 am - 11:05 am on Sundays, go to the Campus Center following 9:00 worship. This orientation and introduction to Church School teaching does not include any expectation that those who attend are ready and willing to sign on for the fall as teachers. It is our hope that it will be food for thought, though!

Bread for the World

Today the Micah Group will present background information about Bread for the World, a Christian citizens' advocacy movement which works on behalf of hungry and poor people. We will learn how improvements to the U.S. farm bill can impact hungry people in our country and those in the developing world. Join us at 10:15 am as we participate in the 2007 Bread for the World Offering of Letters by writing letters to our members of Congress

This Week

Parish Notes

Search for Director of Stewardship and
Development

The Personnel Committee has started the search process for a Director of Stewardship and Development (funded initially through the Capital Campaign). The person in this position will provide vision, direction and staff support for stewardship programs. Initial emphasis will be to implement a successful capital campaign including the advanced and major gifts program. Longer term work will include direction and support for annual budget giving and planned giving programs, develop and coordinate year-round stewardship education, and develop a communications plan for stewardship activities. The person selected will be a college graduate with strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Campaign experience is essential. If you know a person who has these skills, please forward his/her name to the Personnel Committee.

Email notice for Cross Roads

We now have the technology to email a notice that Cross Roads is available on the parish website to those who request such a notice. We will also continue to mail a copy when that is a better option for you. Parishioners will have three options: 1) continue to receive Cross Roads by mail as usual, 2) receive only an email notice that Cross Roads is available on the website or to be picked up in the parish office, or 3) receive a mailed copy of Cross Roads and an email notice that it is on the website. If you want to continue to get a mailed copy only, you need to do nothing. If you wish to receive an email notice, please be sure we have your current email address and tell us whether you prefer option 2 or 3. You may send your email confirmation to Mary Anne Handy at mahandy@thechapelofthecross.org.

Vacation Church School to be Filled Soon

Registration is ongoing for our July 23-27 morning program, but some classes are nearing capacity and the "completed kindergarten" class is now filled. If you plan to attend, please register now. Forms are available outside the Educators' office and in the dining room. We have changed the week and the ages of participation. Children must be entering kindergarten in the fall to register for this summer.

A Resignation

Tom Mander has resigned his position as Facilities Manager effective immediately. During his five years of service, Tom has served the parish by initiating system controls which save resources and managing contracts for the most cost-effective and efficient services. We wish Tom well and thank him for his service here.

Men's Prayer Breakfast

The May Men's Prayer Breakfast will meet Wednesday, May 23, at 7:30 am in the dining room. Dr. Richard Pfaff, our own Chapel of the Cross religion professor, will be our guest speaker. Dr. Pfaff will be speaking on "Cultural Levels of Worship". Please bring your questions and a guest. Sankey Blanton will be our breakfast cook . All are invited to join us in prayer, share breakfast and fellowship while we listen to Dr. Pfaff's discourse. If you have a prayer request, please forward it to tony@tonyhawkinsre.com.

Stewardship

Thompson Child & Family Focus

Share your heart and resources. Pick up a heart at the Thompson's table in the dining room beginning today. Buy the item listed on the heart and return it UNWRAPPED to the parish office by June 10. Thompson Child & Family Focus (formerly Thompson Children's Home) now offers year-round school and has a great need for summer uniforms - khaki shorts, polo shirts, sneakers, and short socks. They can also use one-piece swimsuits, underwear, other colors of shorts, and solid color t-shirts this year. Regulations require that only new clothing, bed linens & towels be donated, although gently used clothing can be accepted for infants to 5 year olds in Thompson's Day Care Child Development facilities. For more information, please call Susan Thomason or Dina Urquhart.Financial contributions can also be made to "The Chapel of The Cross" with note on check for: "The Rector's Discretionary Fund/Thompson Child & Family Focus clothes."

New IFC Food Pantry Needs

Our donations to the IFC food pantry during Lent and the first weeks of Easter were very much needed and appreciated; each delivery was welcomed by smiling faces in the IFC office by staff and clients. As the seasons change, IFC needs change. The following items are now requested in order to help the food pantry continue supporting walk-in requests: soup, tuna, Vienna sausage, applesauce, canned salmon, canned navy beans and snacks. No breakable containers, please. Baskets for our food offerings are located in the parish office and in the tower entrance to the church. Thank you for your continuing attention to this need in our community.

Caring for our Troops

Those who wish to support our troops in Iraq should look to the USO Cares program (www.usocares.org/src/uso_home.htm) and Operation Iraqi Children (www.operationiraqichildren.org) as means of getting resources to US troops and Iraqi citizens.
