San Patricio Slide Show
Jerry Cotten, San Patricio mission team member and photographer, will be showing his slides of our recent mission trip to Honduras in the parlor during and after Dinner on the Grounds today at 12:30 pm. Other members of the mission team will be on hand to talk informally about the rich experiences we shared with our friends in Christ in Honduras. Please come by; we are eager to share these experiences with you!

Vacation Bible School Update
We are still accepting students for the fourth and fifth grade class. All other classes are full for our morning church school on July 23-72. You may contact Gretchen Jordan at 929-2193 to request that your child be placed on the waiting list and will we contact you if openings arise.
Seamsters/Seamstresses Needed
We need people to assist with two sewing projects the week of Vacation Church School, July 23-27 . We need someone to come in on Tuesday and Wednesday and others to do some work at home. Children will make prayer pillows and a large handprint banner for San Patricio parish in Honduras. If you can help us with either of these sewing projects, please contact Gretchen Jordan ASAP at 929-2193.
Rector's Letter copies Available
Copies of the Rector's Pentecost letter to the parish about the discernment process concerning gay unions are available in the dining room and in the back of the chapel. Also available (as mentioned in the letter) are copies of his booklet from the series two years ago, "Pastoral Reflections." It may also be accessed online at www.thechapelofthecross.org/2005/PastoralReflections.pdf.
Counters Needed
Each Monday morning a group of parishioners meets to count and deposit all money received by the parish during the prior week. We need additional people for this important committee. The group meets at 9:00 a.m. each Monday and is usually finished by 11:00 a.m. If you would be interested in providing this service to the parish please call the parish accountant Debby Kulik at 929-2193.
Graduate and Professional Students
If you are interested in fellowship with fellow Episcopalians, join us weekly for "Fridays on the Front Porch" at the Carolina Inn. The festivities are every Friday during the summer and include bluegrass music and food! We meet at the church at 4:45 and head over to the Carolina Inn (the corner of Columbia and Cameron Streets). We also schedule a variety of other activities. Vestry Discussions
Over the next several months, members of our congregation are invited and encouraged to communicate with members of the clergy and Vestry regarding the question of whether our parish is called to widen our pastoral care to include the blessing of same-gender unions. The Vestry will be organizing more formal opportunities for education and discussion later in the summer or early fall, but do want to hear from you now regarding your concerns or convictions. Contact information for individual vestry members may be found on the back of Cross Roads. Clergy may be reached through the parish office or by email/mail. Loaves and Fishes Guild
The Loaves and Fishes Guild invites you to become a part of parish hospitality. The Guild offers refreshment in a variety of settings, including Sunday morning coffee and parish dinners and receptions. This is an easy and enjoyable way to serve your fellow parishioners and to offer welcome to visitors and parishioners. You will have the fun and camaraderie of working together and the satisfaction of knowing you have performed a vital service for the church. Triangle Reading Service
TRS is a private, non profit organization that provides live audio news and information for visually impaired, elderly and others who are unable to read printed material. Local and national newspapers and magazines, short stories and other information is read by volunteers and transmitted on a receiver loaned out by TRS. The Chapel of the Cross has a transmitter donated to our loan closet. If you know someone who could use it, please contact Peggy Pratt at (call office for number) or pegpratt@nc.rr.com. Brochures on TRS are available on the rack in the dining room. They can be contacted directly at 832-5138. The Good Samaritan Guild operates a loan closet with medical equipment such as wheelchairs, shower seats, walkers etc. If you are in need, please contact the church office.
Preschool Opening
Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross has a Monday through Friday opening for the 2007-2008 school year for a 4 year old girl, beginning August 6, 2007. She must turn 4 years old by October 16, 2007. Men's Prayer Breakfast
The June Men's Prayer Breakfast will this Wednesday at 7:30 am in the dining room. Earl Cox, the founder and president of Scianta Intelligence, a next-generation machine intelligence and knowledge exploration company, will be the guest speaker. Mr. Cox's topic will be 'Artificial Intelligence and Creativity'. Please bring your questions and a guest. All are invited to join us to pray, share breakfast and fellowship while we listen to Mr. Cox's presentation. If you have a prayer request, please forward it to tony@tonyhawkinsre.com.
Organ Recital
Internationally acclaimed American-English concert and recording artist Ann Elise Smoot will perform on the Kleuker organ in our church on Monday, July 9 at 8:00 pm. Educated at Yale and at the Royal Academy of Music, her concert career was launched by her successes in two major competitions. The program will include compositions by Dietrich Buxtehude, JS Bach, Giles Farnaby, Felix Mendelssohn, André Raison, Lionel Rogg, Ad Wammes and Jean Langlais. The recital is part of the week-long Royal School of Church Music "Carolina Course for Girl and Organ Institute," meeting in Raleigh and sponsored by the Chapel of the Cross and the Durham-Chapel Hill chapter of the American Guild of Organists. The recital is free and open to the public. Donations will be welcomed.
Searching for Peace in Sudan
Ross Kane, our Duke Divinity summer intern, will discuss peacebuilding in Sudan at the July 22 Dinner on the Grounds. Ross worked for three years as an Episcopal Missionary with Sudan in peacebuilding and human rights advocacy. During this time the Episcopal Church produced a short documentary on his work which he will show and discuss as well.
Voice and Organ Concert
Chapel Hill native, Katherine Dain (soprano) and English organist Andrew Earis will present a recital of virtuoso works for voice and organ on Thursday, July 9, at 8 pm in the church. The program will include works by Vivaldi, Purcell, Bach, Louis Vierne and others. The recital is free and open to the public. Donations will be welcomed.
Stewardship
Support Youth Summer Mission!
The EYC is going to New Orleans this summer and you can help! Become a "stockholder" in the trip by buying $25 stocks to support their mission. In return you will receive a personal note from a member of the mission team along with other benefits. Look for youth handing out flyers after the 10 am service today, or look for the flyer on the announcement table after the 8 am and 5:15 pm services. Return the slip to the church office. Thanks for your contribution!
Habitat Help
The Chapel of the Cross/UNC-Student Partnership has received a request from Don Click at Orange County Habitat for Humanity asking if we would help furnish our latest Partnership home. The home owner, Barbara Hopkins, has extensive furniture needs for her home on Purefoy Drive. She needs a bunk bed set, a double bed, two dressers, and living room furniture. Interested parishioners may contact Don Click at (call office for number).
The Orange House Supper
Thursday, June 28 at 5pm several members of the Social Ministry Committee will bring dinner to Orange House, the Alliance for AIDS Services residence in Carrboro, and join the residents for supper. If you are interested in participating, please contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com or (call office for number). Committee members plan to repeat this in late July so contact Peggy if you might like to join them. If there is interest, a monthly cook team could be organized.
Community Notes
Flying Solo Conference
Episcopal Singles Ministry offers this intergenerational conference for single adults August 31 - September 3 at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville. The theme, "On Pilgrimage," will be led by keynote speaker Dr. Brett Webb-Mitchell, who writes, "We are always either going to something, someplace, somewhere, or leaving it all behind. To go forward means to leave something, someone behind....to go deeper means to get under the surface of the thin, brittle veneer of life in order to see the immense and yet beautiful streams of life's complexities." Brochures and registration forms are available in the dining room in the tract racks.
IFC Needs
This week's most urgent needs at the Food Pantry are for biscuit mix, baking mix, cake mix, cooking oil (1 qt.), flour (2 lb.), snack crackers, saltines, grits, cereal, pudding, shampoo, toilet tissue, paper bags with handles (save your grocery store bags and bring them to donate). Our contributions make a difference. When we deliver items from the church to the Food Pantry in Carrboro, these items are used almost immediately to help support walk-in requests. If every person, or every family, coming to a worship service at the Chapel of the Cross each week brought just one item for the Food Pantry, it would make an enormous difference for good in our community. Make it a habit if you can. Baskets for our donations are located in the parish office and at the tower entrance to the church.
Club Nova Thrift Shop
Located in Carrboro, Club Nova promotes and provides opportunities for individuals living with mental illness to lead meaningful and productive lives of their choice in the community. Open Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, Club Nova Thrift Shop gladly accepts both material and monetary contributions during regular business hours (all donations are tax deductible). Caring For Our Troops
Those who wish to support our troops in Iraq should look to the USO Cares program (www.usocares.org/src/uso_home.htm) and Operation Iraqi Children (www.operationiraqichildren.org) as means of getting resources to US troops and Iraqi citizens.
Meals on Wheels
If you or another parishioner could benefit from a hot noonday meal delivered to your home Monday through Friday because of illness or other infirmity, you are urged to contact the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels Program. Contact Jeanie Arnel at (call office for number), Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 1:30 pm.
