Get to know our Summer Intern!
Please take advantage of two special opportunities to engage with our summer intern from Duke Divinity School, Ross Kane. In the parlor after the 10 am service today, Ross will be leading an introductory study of Islam based on a course he took this summer at Oxford University. Next Sunday, at the Dinner on the Grounds, Ross will share his experiences as an Episcopal missionary in Sudan with peace - building and human rights advocacy. He will show a brief documentary produced by the Episcopal Church about his work

A Message From the Rector
I am happy to welcome Ron McGill as our new Facilities Manager. Ron lives in Durham where he has filled a similar responsibility for the Durham Exchange Club.
I also welcome to the staff parishioner Marcia Pate, our new Parish Administrative Assistant, replacing Mary Anne Handy, who now serves as Parish Administrator.

Sunday Summer Parish Breakfasts
There is one remaining Sunday this summer to join fellow parishioners for freshly prepared breakfasts at 8:30 am. In addition to some great food, these are wonderful opportunities to gather together. A big "thank you!" to the chefs who have volunteered to coordinate these events, including Duane Gilbert for the August 5 breakfast. Adults eat for just $3, children age 5-10 eat for $1 and children under 5 eat free!
Contribution Statements Mailed
Contribution statements for the first six months (through June 30) of 2007 were mailed on Tuesday, July 10, to all those who made pledges to the Chapel of the Cross for 2007. Please check these statements for accuracy and contact the Parish Accountant, Debby Kulik, in the parish office if you find any discrepancies or have any questions. Note that these statements include all contributions recorded through June 30 but, because contributions are counted and recorded on Monday mornings, may not include contributions received after the last Sunday in June. Such contributions will be recorded in July and reflected on the next quarterly statement. Note also that payments received in 2007 but credited to a prior or future year pledge are not reflected on these statements.
Vacation Bible School Update
We are still accepting students for the fourth and fifth grade class. All other classes are full for our morning church school on July 23-72. You may contact Gretchen Jordan at 929-2193 to request that your child be placed on the waiting list and will we contact you if openings arise.
Seamsters/Seamstresses Needed
We need people to assist with two sewing projects the week of Vacation Church School, July 23-27 . We need someone to come in on Tuesday and Wednesday and others to do some work at home. Children will make prayer pillows and a large handprint banner for San Patricio parish in Honduras. If you can help us with either of these sewing projects, please contact Gretchen Jordan ASAP at 929-2193.
Rector's Letter copies available
Copies of the Rector's Pentecost letter to the parish about the discernment process concerning gay unions are available in the dining room and in the back of the chapel. Also available (as mentioned in the letter) are copies of his booklet from the series two years ago, "Pastoral Reflections." It may also be accessed online at www.thechapelofthecross.org/2005/PastoralReflections.pdf.
Vestry Discussions
Over the next several months, members of our congregation are invited and encouraged to communicate with members of the clergy and Vestry regarding the question of whether our parish is called to widen our pastoral care to include the blessing of same-gender unions. The Vestry will be organizing more formal opportunities for education and discussion later in the summer or early fall, but do want to hear from you now regarding your concerns or convictions. Contact information for individual vestry members may be found on the back of Cross Roads. Clergy may be reached through the parish office or by email/mail. A resource that the Vestry has found to be very helpful is the book "To Set our Hope on Christ: A response to the Invitation of Windsor Report Paragraph 135" This book is available for $5.00 through Education/Liturgy Resources in Oxford, NC phone (919)693-5547 or may be downloaded from the web at www.episcopalchurch.org/documents/ToSetOurHopeOnChrist.pdf.
Counters Needed
Each Monday morning a group of parishioners meets to count and deposit all money received by the parish during the prior week. We need additional people for this important committee. The group meets at 9:00 a.m. each Monday and is usually finished by 11:00 a.m. If you would be interested in providing this service to the parish please call the parish accountant Debby Kulik at 929-2193.
Loaves and Fishes Guild
The Loaves and Fishes Guild invites you to become a part of parish hospitality. The Guild offers refreshment in a variety of settings, including Sunday morning coffee and parish dinners and receptions. This is an easy and enjoyable way to serve your fellow parishioners and to offer welcome to visitors and parishioners. You will have the fun and camaraderie of working together and the satisfaction of knowing you have performed a vital service for the church. Triangle Reading Service
TRS is a private, non profit organization that provides live audio news and information for visually impaired, elderly and others who are unable to read printed material. Local and national newspapers and magazines, short stories and other information is read by volunteers and transmitted on a receiver loaned out by TRS. The Chapel of the Cross has a transmitter donated to our loan closet. If you know someone who could use it, please contact Peggy Pratt at (call office for number) or pegpratt@nc.rr.com. Brochures on TRS are available on the rack in the dining room. They can be contacted directly at 832-5138. The Good Samaritan Guild operates a loan closet with medical equipment such as wheelchairs, shower seats, walkers etc. If you are in need, please contact the church office.
Preschool Opening
Preschool at the Chapel of the Cross has a Monday through Friday opening for the 2007-2008 school year for a 4 year old girl, beginning August 6, 2007. She must turn 4 years old by October 16, 2007. Mark Your Calendar
Voice and Organ Concert
Chapel Hill native, Katharine Dain (soprano) and English organist Andrew Earis will present a recital of virtuoso works for voice and organ on Thursday, July 19, at 8 pm in the church. The program will include works by Claudio Moneverdi, Louis Vierne, Antonio Vivaldi, Gavin Bryars, Orlando Gibbons, and Henry Purcell. The recital is free and open to the public. Donations will be welcomed.
Searching for Peace in Sudan
Ross Kane, our Duke Divinity summer intern, will discuss peacebuilding in Sudan at the July 22 Dinner on the Grounds. Ross worked for three years as an Episcopal Missionary with Sudan in peacebuilding and human rights advocacy. During this time the Episcopal Church produced a short documentary on his work which he will show and discuss as well.
Summer Reading Opportunities
Back by popular demand, there will be two book discussion this summer. On Wednesday, July 25 at 7:30 pm we will discuss Marcus Borg's Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time. On Wednesday, August 15 at 7:30 the discussion will focus on the UNC summer reading book The Death of Innocents by Sister Helen Prejean. Both meetings will take place in the parlor. Please join us!

Stockholders Wanted!
This is the final week of the EYC fundraiser for mission to New Orleans! Youth will be handing out flyers after the 10 am service today. Grab a flyer and buy "stocks" in the mission trip to support our young adults.
Habitat Fundraiser
Help Habitat Raise The Roof! This Thursday Habitat for Humanity of Orange County will host a fund-raising dinner at Weaver St Market in Carrboro. Come enjoy Jerk Chicken (or Portabella) w/ Tropical Salsa, Caribbean Sweet Potato Mash, and Black Beans and Rice while listening to the famous Carolina Caterwaulers band! Habitat's goal for this event is to raise enough money to shingle an entire roof of a local Habitat home!
The Orange House Supper
In late July, members of the Social Ministry Committee will again bring dinner to Orange House, the Alliance for AIDS Services residence in Carrboro, and join the residents for supper. Community Notes
Chapel Hill Community Chorus
The Chapel Hill Community Chorus will present its summer concert at University Methodist Church on Friday, July 20, at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door or from chorus members. Directed by Dr. Sue Klausmeyer, the group will perform spiritual and gospel works, including Robert Ray's Gospel Mass, "Deep River" and "My Lord, What a Mornin'." Several parishioners sing with this group.
Flying Solo Conference
Episcopal Singles Ministry offers this intergenerational conference for single adults August 31 - September 3 at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville. The theme, "On Pilgrimage," will be led by keynote speaker Dr. Brett Webb-Mitchell, who writes, "We are always either going to something, someplace, somewhere, or leaving it all behind. To go forward means to leave something, someone behind....to go deeper means to get under the surface of the thin, brittle veneer of life in order to see the immense and yet beautiful streams of life's complexities." Brochures and registration forms are available in the dining room in the tract racks.
IFC Needs
This week's most urgent needs at the Food Pantry are for biscuit mix, baking mix, cake mix, cooking oil (1 qt.), flour (2 lb.), snack crackers, saltines, grits, cereal, pudding, shampoo, toilet tissue, paper bags with handles (save your grocery store bags and bring them to donate). Our contributions make a difference. When we deliver items from the church to the Food Pantry in Carrboro, these items are used almost immediately to help support walk-in requests. If every person, or every family, coming to a worship service at the Chapel of the Cross each week brought just one item for the Food Pantry, it would make an enormous difference for good in our community. Make it a habit if you can. Baskets for our donations are located in the parish office and at the tower entrance to the church.
Our Growing Burmese Population
Our two original families who came to us last fall have now split up into two apartments in order to accommodate newly arrived extended family members. They are in need of additional supplies. The list includes large pots with lids, paring knives, large soup bowls and soup spoons, and a sofa, or sofa bed. They also would like to have a computer as one of the young men is working on his GED. Please bring any of these items (except the sofa) to the office. If you have a sofa, please contact Barbara Tremblay at btrem@verizon.net or (call for number) so we can arrange delivery.
Club Nova Thrift Shop
Located in Carrboro, Club Nova promotes and provides opportunities for individuals living with mental illness to lead meaningful and productive lives of their choice in the community. Open Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, Club Nova Thrift Shop gladly accepts both material and monetary contributions during regular business hours (all donations are tax deductible). Caring For Our Troops
Those who wish to support our troops in Iraq should look to the USO Cares program (www.usocares.org/src/uso_home.htm) and Operation Iraqi Children (www.operationiraqichildren.org) as means of getting resources to US troops and Iraqi citizens.
Meals on Wheels
If you or another parishioner could benefit from a hot noonday meal delivered to your home Monday through Friday because of illness or other infirmity, you are urged to contact the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels Program. Contact Jeanie Arnel at (call office for number), Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 1:30 pm.
