Announcements
Awakening Heart Meeting Cancellation
Awakening Heart unfortunately will break its many-year record of meeting every second Saturday by canceling its meeting on August 11. We'll start a new string of monthly meetings in September, when anyone with the intention of a regular practice of meditation will be welcome to join us. Blessings to all from the well of sacred silence.
Dinner on the Grounds
There is one remaining dinner this summer. Please join us in the fellowship of shared dinner after the 10 am service on August 19. Please bring a dish to share. Drinks will be provided.
Parish Distribution List
The parish maintains an email list of those who would like to receive the weekly prayer list from the bulletin, notices of deaths of parishioners, and other time-sensitive parish information. In order to protect the privacy of those receiving messages and their e-mail addresses, all messages are sent as "blind carbon copies". If you would like to receive this information, please send your e-mail address to the Parish Communications Coordinator, Vivian Harris Varner, at vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org.
Vestry Discussions
Over the next several months, members of our congregation are invited and encouraged to communicate with members of the clergy and vestry regarding the question of whether our parish is called to widen our pastoral care to include the blessing of same-gender unions. The vestry will be organizing more formal opportunities for education and discussion later in the summer or early fall, but does want to hear from you now regarding your concerns or convictions. Contact information for individual vestry members may be found on the back of Cross Roads. Clergy may be reached through the parish office or by email/mail. A resource that the vestry has found to be very helpful is the book "To Set our Hope on Christ: A Response to the Invitation of Windsor Report Paragraph 135." Graduate and Professional Students
If you are interested in fellowship with fellow Episcopalians, join us weekly for "Fridays on the Front Porch" at the Carolina Inn. The festivities are every Friday during the summer and include bluegrass music and food! We meet at the church at 4:45 and head over to the Carolina Inn (the corner of Columbia and Cameron Streets). We also schedule a variety of other activities. Community Notes
Supporting Mentally Ill Family Members
A series of 12 weekly classes structured to help family members understand and support their family member suffering with a mental illness will begin Tuesday, September 4 at 6:30-9:00 pm at the Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Roadd. There is no cost to participate in this NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program. Flying Solo Conference
Episcopal Singles Ministry offers this intergenerational conference for single adults August 31 - September 3 at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville. The theme, "On Pilgrimage," will be led by keynote speaker Dr. Brett Webb-Mitchell, who writes, "We are always either going to something, someplace, somewhere, or leaving it all behind. To go forward means to leave something, someone behind....to go deeper means to get under the surface of the thin, brittle veneer of life in order to see the immense and yet beautiful streams of life's complexities." Brochures and registration forms are available in the dining room in the tract racks.
Club Nova Thrift Shop
Located in Carrboro, Club Nova promotes and provides opportunities for individuals living with mental illness to lead meaningful and productive lives of their choice in the community. Open Tuesday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, Club Nova Thrift Shop gladly accepts both material and monetary contributions during regular business hours (all donations are tax deductible). Caring for our Troops
Those who wish to support our troops in Iraq should look to the USO Cares program (www.usocares.org/src/uso_home.htm) and Operation Iraqi Children (www.operationiraqichildren.org) as means of getting resources to US troops and Iraqi citizens.
Meals on Wheels
If you or another parishioner could benefit from a hot noonday meal delivered to your home Monday through Friday because of illness or other infirmity, you are urged to contact the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Meals on Wheels Program. Contact Jeanie Arnel at (call office for number), Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 1:30 pm.
Our Growing Burmese Population
Our two original families who came to us last fall have now split up into two apartments in order to accommodate newly arrived extended family members. They need additional supplies. The list includes large pots with lids, paring knives, large soup bowls and soup spoons, and a sofa, or sofa bed. Please bring any of these items (except the sofa) to the parish office. If you have a sofa, please contact Barbara Tremblay at btrem@verizon.net or (call office for number) so we can arrange delivery.
IFC Needs
The Inter-Faith Council Food Pantry continues to need Ramen noodles, grits, cereal, sliced white bread, jello, snacks, tuna, mayonnaise, cooking oil (32oz.), flour (2lb.), sugar (2lb.), cake mix, crackers, canned pasta, beef stew, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, elbow macaroni, macaroni and cheese, green beans tomatoes, garbanzo beans and paper bags with handles (save your grocery store bags and bring them to donate). Our contributions make a difference. When we deliver items from the church to the Food Pantry in Carrboro, these items are used almost immediately to help support walk-in requests. If every person, or every family, coming to a worship service at the Chapel of the Cross each week brought just one item for the Food Pantry, it would make an enormous difference for good in our community. Make it a habit if you can. Baskets for our donations are located in the parish office and at the tower entrance to the church.

All submissions are subject to editing; publication of the submission is not guaranteed.
