Episcopal Campus Ministry - Welcome Students
Welcome new and returning students. We are so very glad to have you and would love to greet you following the service. Undergraduates are invited to be a part of Episcopal Campus Ministry which meets every Tuesday night during the academic year. Join us for dinner and fellowship this Tuesday at 5:30 pm in our Campus Center. Save Labor Day weekend for a three day beach retreat to meet other ECM folks and start the semester off right. Graduate and Professional Students are invited to join the chaplain for lunch Sunday September 16 following the 11:15 service at Spanky's in downtown Chapel Hill.
Announcements
Foyer Dinner Groups
Interested in meeting some new people? Join a Foyer Dinner Group where you can get to know other parishioners while sharing a meal. Groups usually have 10 to 12 members and meet once a month. Dinners are casual, cooking is shared, and participants take turns hosting the meals. The host plans the menu and provides the main dish. Sign up sheets can be found in the dining room and should be returned to the office when completed. Responses need to be in by September 17. For more information, contact Amelia Carew (call office for number), or Sandy Gerow (call office for number).
Mission Trip to the Gulf Coast
The Social Ministry Committee has been looking into various options for a possible mission trip to the Gulf Coast. This might be done in conjunction with a parish there or in concert with other churches in our diocese. Before the committee can proceed, it would be helpful to determine if there is sufficient interest by parishioners for such an opportunity. Given the distance, it would require probably five to seven days. Please contact Peggy Pratt at pegpratt@nc.rr.com or (call office for number) if you would like to meet with other interested parishioners.
Church School Needs
With the first Sunday of Church School just three weeks away, we hope some of you sitting in the pew will be reading this announcement and note the pressing need to fill a few team slots for Church School classes. Recruitment has been very successful thus far, and I know that some of you who have taken a break in recent years or who have never shared in this ministry will come forward! With four adults on each teaching team, teachers are provided with Sundays off and teaching responsibilities just once a month. The classes still needing team members include 4th, 5th and 6th grade classes and the combination 7th - 8th grade class. We also need a good list of substitutes. A roster is posted on the Children and Family Ministry bulletin board in the dining room and on the Education office door. Contact Gretchen Jordan for additional information or to volunteer!
Help Reduce Parish Postage Costs
Cross Roads and the Liturgical Calendar are available on the parish web site. As we try to reduce our parish office's environmental impact and postage costs, we ask all parishioners who are able to view these publications online to please do so. You may e-mail or call the Parish Administrative Assistant, Marsha Pate, at 929-2193 or mpate@thechapelofthecross.org to state that you would like to stop receiving a paper copy of Cross Roads and the Liturgical Calendar. You will instead receive a monthly email informing you of the availability of the current issue of Cross Roads and a quarterly email for the Liturgical Calendar. Thank you for considering these options as we attempt to reduce paper usage and postage costs at the Chapel of the Cross.
Volunteer Opportunities
The Social Ministry Committee is interested in forming cook teams for the AIDS Alliance House in Carrboro, Orange House. The facility houses six adult AIDS patients on a long term basis. Due to kitchen size, team members would cook at home and bring dinner to share with the residents. Three people per team would be more than sufficient. It could be done once or twice monthly depending on the number of people interested. Also, The Ronald McDonald House has asked area parishes to consider forming a meal team to cook monthly for their guests. They have a large fully equipped kitchen and a team as large as eight could be involved. They cook for about 40 nightly. The other option would be a group to meet at the church and make casseroles which could be frozen and delivered to the house. They could pull these out when they don't have anyone cooking. If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please contact Peggy Pratt, Social Ministry Chair at (call office for number) or at pegpratt@nc.rr.com.
Parish Distribution List
The parish maintains an email list of those who would like to receive the weekly prayer list from the bulletin, notices of deaths of parishioners, and other time-sensitive parish information. In order to protect the privacy of those receiving messages and their e-mail addresses, all messages are sent as "blind carbon copies". If you would like to receive this information, please send your e-mail address to the Parish Communications Coordinator, Vivian Harris Varner, at vvarner@thechapelofthecross.org.

Four Week Study for Adults
The Rev. Dr. Richard Pfaff will teach an evening class entitled "Do It Yourself Theology?" beginning on Tuesday September 11, continuing for three consecutive Tuesdays through October 2 at 8 pm in the Library. Required text for the class is the Concise Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church. Please use the sign-up sheet on the Adult Education bulletin board in the dining room to indicate your plan to participate in the class and indicate if you want the parish to order the text for you at a cost of $22.00. The deadline for ordering the book is September 1. This class will be limited to 20. Dr. Pfaff writes this about the class: "An attempt to 'do' some theology ourselves, guided by an approach that tries to balance simultaneously, along with technical theology, scriptural exegesis, history, experience, and feeling. Other elements, such as linguistics or physiology, may be introduced as participants are able and willing to contribute them. The four sessions will be open-ended and experimental; participants will be expected to avail themselves of, and bring to each session, 1) a Bible, 2) the paperback Concise Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church and 3) thinking caps. Our starting point will be baptism, especially infant baptism: may, should, and/or must infants be baptized?".
Annual Parish BBQ
The Chapel of the Cross's Annual Parish BBQ is scheduled for September 16 at 6:30 pm. This wonderful celebration of fellowship will follow the 5:15 service and will be held on the parish grounds with a complete meal catered by Gillis's BBQ. A tradition that accompanies the BBQ is a parish food drive. In thanksgiving for our bounty, please bring 3 food items for the IFC Food Pantry. Tickets for the BBQ will be sold after Sunday services starting on August 26 and are priced as follows: Adults - $10, Children under 10 - $5, University Students free. No family will be charged more than $40. PLEASE NOTE: on September 9 we will tell the caterer how many people to prepare for; therefore, all tickets must be purchased by September 9.

Donate School Supplies
Since 1994, Communities In Schools of Orange County (CIS) has been a vital partner to identify and provide excellent community resources for the middle school after school programs. The organization actively advocates for the children in this community. CIS has asked partners for direct donations in the form of school supplies such as durable book bags, 3-ring binders, pens, pencils, rulers, protractors, composition notebooks. A donation box is located in the dining room to receive school supplies until August 30. For more information or to make a monetary donation, contact Jessica Scharle (CIS Contact) at (call office for number) or jjscharle@gmail.com.
