Today

Compline tonight at 9:30 pm

“Set your minds on the things that are above, where Christ is.” The ancient monastic service of Compline, the “completion” of the day, is offered in our church every Sunday evening during the university semester at 9:30 pm. An organ improvisation follows the 25-minute service. Come join us and put all of your comings and goings, your beginnings and endings, and everything in-between into the loving hands of God.

Church School Kick-Off

Join us in the church following the 9:00 service today to kick off the new Church School year. After a skit (starring some brave teachers and staff) and songs, youth will proceed to their classrooms to meet their teachers briefly and enjoy Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Please be aware that younger children (those in classrooms on the second floor) will not be dismissed until a parent or guardian arrives to retrieve them. Children in basement classrooms will be dismissed at 11:05 am unless the teacher is otherwise instructed by a parent. Parents of older kids: please do not make the playground your post-church school meeting spot; this space is reserved for young children's care during the 11:15 service.

Episcopal Youth Community

Join us tonight for our KICK-OFF meeting! EYC will meet tonight from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Come see what is new this year! EYC is for all youth from 6th - 8th and 9th - 12th grades. Parents are invited tonight. Please bring a dish to share. We will end our time together tonight with a potluck. Looking forward to seeing you! Please contact Caren Parker at cparker@thechapelofthecross.org with any questions.

THIS WEEK

Episcopal Campus Ministry

Welcome new and returning students. We are so very glad to have you and would love to greet you following the service. Undergraduates are invited to be a part of Episcopal Campus Ministry which meets every Tuesday night during the academic year. Join us for dinner and fellowship this Tuesday at 5:30 pm in our Campus Center. This Tuesday a guest will speak about his trip to South Africa. We hope to see many of you there!

Next Week

Approaching Adolescence

Dr. John Tisdale, a therapist and Methodist minister, will present a two-part program for parents entitled “Approaching Adolescence.” Please join us on Sept. 16 and 23 during the church school hour to learn how our own feelings about the teenage years influence our parenting and how we can approach adolescence in a more positive way.

Parish Notes

Foyer Dinner Groups

HURRY! Only a short time left to fill out a Foyer Dinner sign-up sheet available in the dining room after every service. There is an opportunity to indicate an interest in a group for parents with young children. Foyer Dinner groups are a wonderful way to meet and share a meal with fellow parishioners. Groups of ten to twelve usually gather once a month. Each member or couple brings a contribution to the meal and the host provides the main course. Responses should be in the parish office by Sept. 18. For more information contact Amelia Carew or Sandy Gerow.

Four Week Study for Adults

The Rev. Dr. Richard Pfaff will teach an evening class beginning this week entitled “Do It Yourself Theology?” The class convenes Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 8 pm. As of Tuesday, Sept. 4 there was one slot remaining for the limited attendance class. There is also a waiting list. You will be called if an opening occurs and your name is on the waiting list. The class will conclude on Oct. 2.

12:30 Social Hour

Sunday, Sept. 9 begins the 4th year of the 12:30 Social Hour. You are invited each week following the 11:15 Sunday morning service to enjoy food, fellowship and a hearty welcome to the Chapel of the Cross with old-timers and newcomers alike. Heavy hors d'oeuvres and light refreshment are provided by volunteers and the Social Hour NEEDS YOU. Please log onto http://groups.yahoo.com/group/COTCsocialhour to join the new Social Hour list-serve. From there you can keep up with the group calendar, learn about volunteer opportunities and help continue the 12:30 Social Hour tradition. E-mail Anne Hoole (Hospitality Manager) at ahoole@thechapelofthecross.com if you have any questions or call Anne to find out more.

Conversations Concerning the Blessing of Same-Gender Unions

The rector and the vestry will host a series of parish gatherings as part of the discernment process about whether to extend the congregation's pastoral care for gay couples by offering a formal blessing of same-gender unions. These sessions will include an educational segment as well as a discussion segment. The dates and times of the sessions are as follows: Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 3:00 pm at Carol Woods; Sunday, Sept. 23 at 8:15 am (following the 7:30 service); Sunday, Sept. 23 at 12:45 pm (following the 11:15 service); Sunday, Sept. 30 at 6:15 pm (following the 5:15 service); Sunday, Oct. 7 at 11:00 am at Carolina Meadows (following the 10:00 service)Every parishioner is invited to come to one of the hour-long sessions. The vestry respectfully asks that those wishing to contribute to the discussion do so in a constructive manner that will build up the Body of Christ and not be hurtful to those in the congregation who may have a different opinion on this issue. Light hors d’ouvres will be available at the sessions conducted at the church. On Sunday, Oct. 14, at 10:20 am a gathering for parents will be offered, titled “Talking to Kids about Gay Unions.”

Dinners for Eight

Young adults in their 20’s and 30’s (roughly) are invited to sign up for Dinners For Eight, a series of monthly supper groups for singles and couples. David Frazelle will arrange all participants into the groups of eight, taking into account marital and parental status and will rearrange folks into new groups at the end of the semester. Registration forms are available in the parlor, the parish office and the back of the chapel. Contact David with questions at 929-2193, dfrazelle@thechapelofthecross.org.

Annual Parish BBQ

The Chapel of the Cross’s Annual Parish BBQ is scheduled for Sept. 16 at 6:30 pm. This wonderful celebration of fellowship will follow the 5:15 service and will be held on the parish grounds with a complete meal catered by Gillis’s BBQ. A tradition that accompanies the BBQ is a parish food drive. In thanksgiving for our bounty, please bring three food items for the IFC Food Pantry. Tickets for the BBQ will be sold after Sunday services and are priced as follows: Adults - $10, Children under 10 - $5, University Students - free. No family will be charged more than $40. PLEASE NOTE: today we will tell the caterer how many people to prepare for; therefore, all tickets must be purchased today.

Church School Teachers Still Needed

We still are looking for a few good folks to step forward and offer to teach Church School. Due to the shortage of teachers we had to combine some ages BUT we are hopeful that will change with you! We need two additional teachers in order to provide a self contained class for the 6th grade. If we secure more teachers, we will also divide the 4th and 5th grade and make two classes. Contact Gretchen Jordan at 929-2193 for additional information or to sign on as a teacher.

Intimacy with God Through Prayer

When we slow down our fast paced lives and allow God to find us, an intimate knowledge of God can evolve. On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Spiritual Life Committee will present a Centering Prayer Workshop from 9:30 am until 4:00 pm at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Hillsborough. The Reverend Tom Ward will lead beginners and experienced practitioners in this method of prayer. Registration forms may be found in the Aug. and Sept. issues of Cross Roads and in the descriptive brochures located at the back of the church and chapel and on the dining room tract rack. A $25 fee includes lunch. On Oct. 7, Mr. Ward will preach at the 9:00 and 11:15 services. After Sept. 10, registration will be open to the wider community. Space is limited, so register today to reserve your space.

Become an Acolyte

All 6th through 12th grade and undergraduate college students are invited to consider being an acolyte. Acolytes are key leaders in our worship here, and serving in this manner can form us spiritually in important ways. Mandatory training sessions for new and old acolytes: Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am (primarily for 6th – 12th graders); and Sunday, Sept. 16 following the 11:15 service and including lunch (primarily for college students). Please RSVP to David Frazelle, 929-2193 or dfrazelle@thechapelofthecross.org by Sept. 5, and contact him with any questions or concerns.

2nd Graders Receive Bibles

Next Sunday, Sept. 16, our second grade students will receive a gift of the Children’s Illustrated Bible during the 9:00 service. Parents, call the parish office to indicate you and your 2nd grader will be in attendance!

Servant Leadership Class

With the new class of Johnson Interns comes a new class of Servant Leadership taught here at the church. Classes begin on Sept. 28. You can pick up a brochure with details at the JIP bulletin board, across from the church office. To register, call or email: 929-2193 or johnson.intern@gmail.com.

Youth Saints Needed

The Children’s Chapel needs youth assistants each Sunday morning to support the adult leaders. Youth Saints set up the chapel, greet preschoolers, help insure safety and encourage children to participate fully in the service. Young people in the third grade or older are assigned to teams that volunteer on a rotating basis (serving about once a month). An orientation session will be held on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 11:15 am in the chapel. All Youth Saints, including those with previous experience, are asked to attend or to arrange an individual orientation with Boykin Bell. For more information or to register for this service program, contact Boykin at bbell@thechapelofthecross.org or 929-2193.

Children’s Chapel Welcomes Young Parishioners

Children’s Chapel, our much beloved worship service for children ages two (and out of diapers) through kindergarten, welcomes young parishioners to meet on the playground during the 9:00 am service and progress with adult leaders to the chapel for music, stories and prayer. Children’s Chapel follows the liturgy of the Episcopal Church and is wonderful preparation for the day children will sit in the church pews with their families. If you have questions about the transition to the Big Church, please contact Gretchen Jordan or Boykin Bell but please, do not send older children to Children’s Chapel. We will welcome them back as Youth Saint volunteers (on a rotating schedule) when they reach the third grade.

1st & 2nd Grade Worship Class

The worship class will begin on Sept. 30 and meet once a month through spring. Other dates will be announced. The class meets in the Library and Campus Center during the 9:00 service. Children begin in the library. While this is an opportunity for instruction in the liturgy, it also includes a worship component.

Heifer Gift Arks

The Gift Ark Campaign for Heifer International supplies animals to struggling communities in 125 countries around the world. Two successful campaigns in 2005 and 2006 call for a third! This year’s effort spans five weeks, to conclude with a celebration at the Blessing of the Animals service on Oct. 2. Purchase a puzzle piece for $25, or begin saving in a new Heifer bank to purchase a puzzle piece before Oct. 2. Look for the Ark display in the dining hall, which includes information on the Heifer Gift Ark, ark-shaped collection boxes for youths, colorful cards for gift giving in honor or memory of others, and the puzzle itself! The Micah Group reminds us that Heifer Project efforts address many of the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals), and our gifts to Heifer help us reach individual targets of 0.7 of 1% giving toward the MDGs, as encouraged by the diocese and denomination.

Vestry Election Process

The vestry has appointed a committee to make recommendations on the election process, including the balloting procedures and the number of candidates which can be selected. If you have views you would like to be considered, please let Bill Joyner (marybrenda@earthlink.net) know by Sept. 15. Other members of the committee are Syd Alexander, Heather Benjamin, Jim Crow, and Joe Ferrell.

Environmental Stewardship Committee Meeting

The first fall meeting of the Environmental Stewardship Committee will be held this Tuesday at 7:00 pm in the parish library. We will be planning our activities for the coming year. All are welcome. If you have questions about this meeting or about the committee, please contact Linda Rimer at lbrimer@bellsouth.net.

Parish Choir

Will sing at 5:15 and other services. Open to everyone, including young people and students. No audition is required. Rehearsals on Monday nights at 7 pm. All voice parts are needed. First rehearsal: Sept. 10. You are welcome simply to come to the rehearsal.

Mary Harris Bible Study

The Mary Harris Bible Class meets this Tuesday from 8:30 am to 9:30 am in the parish library. The class continues its study of the whole Bible and is now reading I and II Peter. The class is a self-led study group, and members volunteer to take turns leading the class and facilitating discussion. Discussions are lively and meaningful, and members create an atmosphere of caring and enthusiasm. All are welcome to join us. For further information, please call Mary Schoenfeld.

Stewardship Opportunities

Project 5000 is Coming!

Project 5000 is a food drive to help feed hungry people in our community, based on Jesus’s feeding of 5000 as described in all four gospels, a clear mandate for us. Our parish will begin its drive on Sept. 16 at the parish barbecue, where empty boxes and a list of groceries to fill them will be available. Boxes will continue to be available for several weeks. Filled boxes should be returned to the church for delivery to the IFC. This project, sponsored by the Social Ministry Committee, is a wonderful opportunity for families to work together on purchasing food items to fill the box. We have set a goal of filling 500 boxes. Watch for more details.

IFC Needs

Now more than ever IFC volunteers and staff need your food donations since household requests for food have risen by 26.5% since January. Last year 9,204 bags of groceries were distributed to Carrboro and Chapel Hill households. The Food Pantry will welcome you and receive your food donations weekdays between 9am - 5pm. Baskets for food donations are also located in the parish office and in the tower entrance to the church. You may also make a financial contribution to the IFC to help our volunteers purchase any of the food items shown on today’s shopping list. The Food Pantry currently needs corn muffin mix, cake mix, cereal, elbow macaroni (1lb.), juice, mayonnaise, sugar (2lb.), oil (1qt.), and cans of: chicken, collards, elbow macaroni, fruit, green beans, luncheon meat, peas, pinto beans, pork and beans, spaghetti sauce and tomatoes.

Play for Pars Golf Tournament

Our parish’s Play for Pars Golf Tournament is one week away. We still need golfers and there is still time to sign up. The tournament will be held next Monday, Sept. 17 at The Preserve at Jordan Lake. Proceeds from this tournament are a critical part of our funding to build Habitat for Humanity houses in Orange County. Registration begins at 11:30 am with a shotgun start at 1:00 pm. The entry fee is $125 per person. Please join us as this is a great event and we always have a wonderful time. Contact Brian McRae at mcraebj@gmail.com.

The Environmental Stewardship Committee Green Tip:

Conserve water: Collect the water that runs while waiting for your shower to get hot - use it to water your plants.

A Message from the Treasurer

The vast majority of expenses for Chapel of the Cross are fixed, and summer months are traditionally slower for pledge receipts. This combination creates a tight operating environment which is planned for in advance. However, pledge receipts this June and July were much lower than past years and therefore lower than expected or budgeted. If the trend were to continue in August or Sept., it would lead to an uncomfortably tight operating position financially. As your Treasurer, I ask that we all work together toward reversing the trend. Let’s catch up for missed summer pledges as soon as possible and make a conscious effort to balance our payments over the year. In doing so, the ministry of our parish can operate more freely, within budget, and with no worries about continuing with the great things we do.
